Looking For Celtic Songs For Children

These days I'm doing more Celtic festival gigs on the "children's stage" but the problem is that I only have enough songs for one set and I do hate to repeat sets even at a two-day festival. Below is a list of what I'm currently singing with hope that some of the catters can help me out by adding to it.

Yes, I have been all over the internet and kids stuff is just about everywhere - it's the narrowing to the Celtic genre that is making it so difficult. My current line-up of kids songs contains Celtic songs and songs that are not necessarily Celtic, but are accepted as part of the Celtic "community" - at least in Texas. I would also be interested in your opinion as to what "regular" adult Celtic songs would go over well from a children's stage.

Here's what I'm currently doing:
St. Brendan's Fair Isle
St. Patrick Was A Gentleman
A Place In The Choir
The Garden Song
The Cat Came Back
The Unicorn Song
Waltzing With Bears
The Orange And The Green
The Old Carrion Crow
Leatherwing Bat

As I wrote - to the above I add some non-Celtic songs that go over well, but I'd rather be able to do two or three sets of Celtic kids stuff without repeating. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

THESE LITTLE PETS OF OURS
(Tune: This Little Light of Mine)
words by Asia Avery-Serio

These little pets of ours
We're gonna love them so
These little pets of ours
We're gonna love them so
These little pets of ours
We're gonna love them so
Love them so, love them so, love them so

These little pets of ours
They're our pride and joy
These little pets of ours
They're our pride and joy
These little pets of ours
They're our pride and joy
Pride and joy, pride and joy, pride and joy

These little pets of ours
They're so valuable
These little pets of ours
They're so valuable
These little pets of ours
They're so valuable
Valuable, valuable, valueable

These little pets of ours
They're our happiness
These little pets of ours
They're our happiness

They're our happiness
Happiness, happiness, happiness

There are a lot of 'adult' (meaning not specifically aimed at children, rather than sexual in nature) songs that children would enjoy singing along with, but I guess some of them might need a bit of tweaking lyrically if you wish to avoid offending any PC brigade types who might frown upon mentions of alcohol or violence, etc. in front of the young 'uns :-)

In my experience you can't go wrong with "The Devil and the Farmer's Wife" (various versions on this site if you search). Don't know about 'Celtic', but it is an old ballad from the British Isles that travelled over to the Appalachians. Look out for "Two Little Boys" (which includes Devil song) and "Old Time Songs for Kids" by Jeff Warner and Jeff Davis - some great old material on those releases.

There's a fine collection of Scottish songs aimed specifically for children by Katherine Campbell and Ewan McVicar, complete with a CD. $18 from CAMSCO Music.

There's a lovely little book called "Moon Penny" that is a collection of Irish children's songs. I did a quick Google search:

Meek, Bill (complier), "Moon Penny", Ossian Publications, 0-94600-530-3

I don't remember if the book includes music--it might just be the lyrics. But you could set them to trad tunes. :)

Cheers,

Molly

Baloo Baleerie is a gorgeous Gaelic lullaby - I just recorded it but it's not out yet. It will be on my CD called "Simply Beautiful".

Far in the Wood is a short ballad in the style you're looking for, I think - it's on my "Up and Over the Moon! giggle, dance and cuddle songs for the Very Young" Cd.

There are also some really wonderful Celtic songs and rhymes on Carol Ashton's CD "A Children's Ceilidh". It has spoken rhymes and songs -a great resource - for instance these traditional ones - The Tailor and the Mouse, My Aunt Jane, and Goodie on a Saucer.

Available on: Merriweather Records

I look forward to seeing you and Tawmmie in January.

Nothing the least bit specifically "Celtic" about most if not all of those songs. But any song, if it's a good song, is quite at home in Ireland anyway.

How about Singing Kettle I think they are called, aka

Cilla Fisher and Artie Tresize who won Scottish TV awards for their Childrens progamme and singing 'kids' songs

Cilla sister of Archie Fisher/Rae? Fisher family

Ray

Yes, Cilla's the sister of Archie and Ray (not Rae). Ray Fisher is married to Northumbrian piper Colin Ross, and she played a blinder when she was down here in Llantrisant. Cilla Fisher and Artie Tresize have a show called The Singing Kettle.

Incidentally, I think Texas Guest says "Celtic" when he means "Irish" - and there were a good many non-Irish songs in his list. This is a well-worn fallacy among Americans - there are simply thousands of Celtic children's songs from Wales, Brittany, Scotland, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Ireland too. England doesn't profess to be Celtic (apart from Northumbria, Cumbria and the Devon coast).

I hope that's made things clear!

A Trinidadian traditional song, very bawdy, but still plausible because of its humour: "My Donkey Wants Water", or "Hold 'Em Joe".

Not "Celtic", I know, but the original post said "To the above I add some non-Celtic stuff'. Irish: Siuil a Ruin.

I think this should be balanced and include Rangers songs as well.
