BS: Shock Horror: British Lord Lies like Rug

I see where Lord Goldsmith lied blatantly in Parliament today about the 72 Typhoon fighters Britain is selling to Saudi Arabia. For some mysterious reason (!) the Serious Fraud case into corruption is being dropped. According to Lord Goldsmith, it had nothing to do with the "national economic interest". This is a total obvious, blatant lie.

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Peter T.

Unfortunately, it seems to be impossible to deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without the payment of large 'commissions' to certain Saudi 'government officials'. Perhaps the USA has found a different way of deal with this country?

The US just stuffs millions of dollars into used oil drums every day and ships them back.

I have dealt personally with RSAF personnel in a profesional basis- all contacts asked for a 'gift' prior to continuing with the transaction, usually a transfer or issue of weapons fron UK to the RSAF. Which I did not condone- ever.
They are totally corrupt bastards - England is only dealing with them for profit for BEA Systems personnel- mostly RAF retired Group Captains with no other income.
I'll probably be victim of some problem for this,
Roger

To paraphrase Peace, "A politician lie? There must be some mistake!

That does not, however include my sister who is a politician. But she is a LOCAL politician and they are different.

Remember, this is the guy who gave the legal thumbs up to the invasion of Iraq, and who is being relied on to stop any prosecutions of politicians for the sale of honours. Definitely a good man to have in your employ. Very reliable.

Remember those Westerns where the crooks running the town always liked to have a reliable Judge in their pockets?

An honest politician is one who stays bought.

However this balloon may be going to go up in that it seems that litigation about the propriety of the exercise of the jurisdiction to decide whether it was in the public interest to prosecute is likely. Now that will be really really interesting, and no doubt the extent of public interest immunity from discovery (disclosure) will figure large.

I predict that the issue will be found inapt for judicial review and therefore non-justiciable, applying the criteria from the GCHQ case.

The trouble, to close it down completely, won't they have to have Euriopean judges sewn up as well as the English ones? And achieving that could be tricky...

SFO chief disputes Goldsmith claim :

Claims that no charges would have resulted from a Serious Fraud Office probe into a £40 billion arms deal have been disputed by the organisation's head...

Attorney General Lord Goldsmith said there were serious doubts over whether or not the fraud probe would have led to charges. But SFO director Robert Wardle has said it is not possible to reach such a conclusion until such probes are over. He told the Financial Times: "There is no guarantee that charges will be brought until you've completed an investigation... so I had perhaps a different view."

I don't get your drift McGrath. And are you speaking of the ECHR or the European Court (ECJ), the latter being the court of the European Community.

I'm not the lawyer. But I'd have thought that if there was a decision that this wasn't appropriate for a judicial review there should be some way of appealing that beyond our shores.

I am not a lawyer either, but they will certainly get away with it. Some years ago, a junior defence minster was caught red handed peddling guns to unsavoury Arab dictators. He denied everything, including the fact that he was supplying call girls to his clients. There were mobile telephone protocols to prove it. Although this was disclosed on national television, he remained safe. Ironically, one of his titles was "Minister for Defence Procurement". He obviously took his "procurement" responsibilities very seriously. He denied everything, of course and got away with it. Government ministers are "international defence advisors", not gun runners like the rest of us, if we get caught dealing in weapons.
That particular minister got off with everything scot free, until he fell on a very small detail. He sued a newspaper for claiming that his hotel bill in Paris had been paid by his Arab friends. He claimed that his wife had paid it. When the newspaper was able to prove that his wife had been in Switzerland at the time, his case collapsed and the judiciary was forced to prosecute for perjury. I stress the word "forced". He was sent to prison. No charges we ever made for the arms dealing or pimping. You get punished for bringing the system into disrepute in Britain. If you are rich and powerful, minor discretions like illegal weapons dealing do not attract severe penalties.

He was, of course, a conservative, who had made quite a bit of money suing people for libel. One wonders how many other miscarriages of justice he caused. And indeed how Olswang (that was the law firm that caught him out) managed to trace the hotel records (the hotel was in liquidation), and how to afford the speculative cost of a drive for a senior lawyer to the derelict hotel (I think it was) to hunt for the records. Aiken was one I would happily have locked up and thrown away the key. System - disrepute: possibly less personally unpleasant than the other conservative perjurer, the well known sex criminal, but what a bag of scum.

Can Goldsmith really equal that, or has he already done so with his opinion that the Iraq invasion was lawful?
