19 Dec 06 - 07:13 AM (#1913463) Subject: RE: Marianne Faithfull's birthday (19 Dec 1946) From: redsnapper The Mars bar story is pure tabloid sensationalism of the worst kind. It is still, although untrue, largely what Marianne is remembered for. I like Ms Faithfull's work and she is still good today. Happy birthday Marianne! RS |
19 Dec 06 - 07:23 AM (#1913469) Subject: RE: Marianne Faithfull's birthday (19 Dec 1946) From: Scrump I'm surprised that the Mars company didn't cash in on their product's association (real or imagined) with Marianne Faithfull. In those days Cadbury's Flake (another UK choc bar) was advertised with a nubile person of the female gender eating the bar in a somewhat suggestive manner. Mars could have used Marianne in a similar way - obviously I mean eating it, not in any other improper way, which in those days would have been frowned upon by the ITV authorities. |

19 Dec 06 - 08:54 PM (#1914273) Subject: RE: Marianne Faithfull's birthday (19 Dec 1946) From: Adrianel She did a good version of Kurt Weill's "Seven Deadly Sins", packaged with some cabaret songs. In the liner notes, I believe she says she had to transpose an octave down, as she can't get that high any more. On the other hand, you have to remember that Lotte Lenya (for whom it was written) had a rather unusual vocal range, and many others have also altered it to suit their voices. Happy birthday, Marianne, whenever it is. |

Ms. Faithfull spent many years in sobriety and spoke frankly about her struggles. I remember the reporter who wrote, "Hard is the heart that does not wish her well." RIP |

Although I haven't followed her career that much, Marianne was still a highly respected performer in later years and released several albums some of which were highly acclaimed. Her voice had changed, of course, but was very suited to jazz and blues material. So, it's quite possible that more people will mourn her demise than you think. |
