It's called "I never thought my love would leave me" in Digital Traditions, but that isn't quite the version I know.

Hmmm... Surprised I couldn't find it in DT.

Chorus:
Love is a teasing and love is pleasing
and love is a treasure when first it's new
but as it grows older then love grows colder
and fades away like the morning dew

I left my Father, I left my Mother
I left my sisters & brothers too
I left my friends and my kind relations
I left them all for to go with you.

Chorus:

Oh turn around love, your wheel of fortune
Oh turn around love and smile on me
For surely there must be a place of torment
for that young girl who deceiv-ed me

Chorus:

Oh lads beware of your false true lovers
and never mind what the young girls say
They're like the stars on a summer's morning
you think they're near but they're far away.

Chorus:
^^

I'm sure there's a Peter Seeger version slightly different ( or a different song using much the same chorus): must dig out the old LP.

you can mix and match verses from the various versions. Other recordings include Jean Redpath and the Dubliners. Here's another verse. oh love and porter makes young men [b]older
and love and whiskey makes them old and grey
What cannot be cured, love, must be endured love
and so I'm bound for Amerikay
There IS a version in the DT under the title (first lilnes) "I never thought my love would leave me) which I notice is also similar to "There is a tavern in the town" (in DT)

typed from what passes for memory...from an old Jean Redpath record I am too lazy to look up right now

"I wish, I wish, though I wish in vain
I wish I were a maid again
But a maid again, I will never be
Till apples grow on an orange tree."

Chorus:
Love is a teasing and love is pleasing
and love is a treasure(or jewel) when first it's new
but as it grows older then love grows colder
and fades away like the morning dew

"I wish, I wish, that my babe were born
And sitting on my mother's knee
And I, poor girl, were dead and gone
Green grass growing over me."

cho.

"When my apron did hang low
You followed after, through wind and snow,
But now that my apron is to my chin,
You pass my door..(gate?) but you wont come in"

Just happened to be listening to this during my morning 1.7 miles. It's on the Chieftains and Friends "Long Black Veil" and sung by Mary Ann Faithful. A nice version.

I believe these are the lyrics Aisling sings in Ballykissangel.

Oh love is teasin', and love is pleasin'
And love is a pleasure when first it's new
But as love grows older, love grows colder
And fades away like the mornin' dew

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
I wish I was a maid again
But a maid again I ne'er shall be
Til apples grow on an ivy tree

Forgive me, love, if I forsook you
I was mistaken, I'll ne'er deny
But what can't be cured, love, must be endured, love
'Tis his I'll be til the day I die

Seeing this thread reminds me of an incident that happened with a friend of mine some years back. He was British but working at Radio Budapest and in addition to doing propaganda broadcasts in English would sometimes perform folk songs. He sang Love is Teasing having translated it into Hungarian. Unfortunately his translating skills were not as good as he had thought and the third line shown above came out in translation as:

"But as love grows older the love hole grows colder"

Needless to say the party were not impressed.

Other verses:

'Tis youth and folly
THat make men marry
So hear my love I'll no more stay.

What can't be cured, sure
Must be endured, sure
So I'll go to AMerikay.

My love is bonny
My love is brawny
She's like whiskey bright
When first 'tis new

But when 'tis old, sir
It fades and grows cold, sir
And fades away like morning dew.

For,love and porter makes a young man older
and love and whiskey makes him old and grey
And what can't be cured love ,must be endured love
so now I am bound for Americay

and the sweetest apple is the soonest rotten
and the hottest love is the soonest cold
and what can't be cured.... etc

My wife insists that love is teasing was a product of the 60's and is not a traditional song. Whilst I know she is wrong I cannot locate any reference within the threads in this forum nor in the database relating to its origins. How old, when was it first notated etc.

To ask "How old is the song LOVE IS TEASING?" is a lot like asking, "How old is the car that Johnny Cash built, according to the song ONE PIECE AT A TIME?" (Read the lyrics to that song and you will understand the problem.)

We could consider the song line by line.

How old is the line "Love is teasing"? Well, I can find it in a song called LOVE'S A TYRANT that goes back at least to 1831:

And ah! 'tis useless to complain:
Though love is teasing,
'Tis also pleasing.
And pleasure yields as well as pain.

But I can't verify the line "love's a pleasure when first it's new" any further back than 1975; but the variant "love is a treasure when first it's new" goes back at least to 1957.

However, in a slightly different form, it appeared in WALY, WALY, GIN LOVE BE BONNY back in 1714:

O waly, waly, but love be bonny,
A little time while it is new,
But when 'tis auld it waxeth cauld,
And fades away like the morning dew.

I could keep going, but I don't think I could ever give you a simple answer.

For what it's worth, that's what a very early female acquaintance of mine sang back in (no later than) 1970. I expect she got it from a book (she certainly didn't get it from me, and it wasn't for lack of trying), so I'd guess it was published in the late 60s.

OK, I dug a little further. The 1975 book I was referring to was "Folksongs of Britain and Ireland" edited by Peter Kennedy. The song there is #159: A HEALTH TO ALL TRUE-LOVERS, which has the chorus:

So I'm a rover and seldom sober.
I'm a rover of high degree.
It's when I'm drinking I'm always thinking
How to gain my love's company.

But Kennedy also gives the following as an "alternative chorus":

For love is teasin' and love is pleasin'.
Love's a pleasure when first it's new.
As we grow older, our love grows colder
And fades away like the morning dew.

In his chapter-end notes on page 380, he cites several sources for the song from 1924 to 1961, but it isn't clear which is the source for his "alternative chorus."

What you are discussing here is not a song in its own right unless you take a specific instance and say so-and-so sang that so that is a song they have published or put together. It is actually a collection of 'floaters' or 'commonplaces' that occur in numerous different ballads going back mostly to the 17th century at least. The genre of songs that mostly harbours these floaters in particular is that of female laments of the 'Died for Love' family and the 'Must I go bound' family. It is possible to trace probable routes of evolution for each floater but this process with this genre has been going on for several centuries in all the English-speaking parts of the world so it couldn't possibly be an exhaustive study. If you are looking for a background to one of these floaters I might be able to help but Jim has already stated 'Waly Waly' which is at least 17th century, probably 16th century, and the verse in question may even be older than that.

First time I ever heard the song was on Jean Ritchie's first LP, an Elektra 10-inch issued in the early 50s, to a lovely minor-key tune. People (including me) heard it and learned it, and it spread from there.

It didn't come down in her family though; the LP notes say she "learned it from an Irish girl in New York."

She calls it "O Love Is Teasin'." At least within the American folk scene, I have not found any earlier version using that title. I think Jean probably deserves credit for introducing the song in the US.

Isn't there also verse that has something to do with putting love in a box and tying it with twine? Does anyone have that verse?

The version on my Jean Redpath record goes like this (it's slightly different from the version posted earlier, and I prefer this version:

I wish, I wish, though I wish in vain,
I wish I were a maid again;
But a maid again I will never be
Till oranges grow on an apple tree.

CHORUS: For love is a teasing and love is pleasing
Like a jewel when first it's new;
But as it grows older, love grows colder,
And fades away like the morning dew.

When my apron, it hung low,
My true love would follow through wind and snow;
But now that my apron is to my knee
He cares no more what becomes of me. CHORUS

I wish, I wish that my babe were born
And dangling on my mother's knee
And I, poor girl, were dead and gone
With the long green grass growing over me. CHORUS

As an aside (and further to my previous post), I have heard the line line that Bill D posted about the singer's apron being "to my chin", sung in folk clubs, but that's NOT the version that Jean Redpath sings. I much prefer the version she sings, with the apron being "to my knee". Why would an apron be up to someone's chin? It makes no sense. I imagine Bill D had herd the "chin" line in a folk club, as I have done, and in his memory he probably unconsciously merged those lyrics with the Jean Redpath ones that he'd heard earlier, to produce the amalgamated lyrics he posted. But I much prefer the lyrics Jean Redpath sings, which I posted in my previous post.

The orginal to all these versions is likely Waly Waly, aka The Water Is Wide, which appears in Ramsay (1727), and as Jamie Douglas (Childe 204).

The original(?) box verse might be

O had I wist, afore I kissed,
That love wad be sae ill tae win,
I had lockit my heart in a kist o' gowd/stane,
And pinn'd it close wi' a siller/gowden pin.

I was the writer on the Ballykissangel episode that featured this being sung acapella. I heard it often in Ireland as a child but I never heard a definitive set of verses. Bearing that in mind I took the liberty of rejigging the words to reflect the dramatic contest - ie the heroine of the show has rushed into marriage with the wrong man and now regrets it, and is casting soulful glances across the room to her true love, the parish priest.

I didn't invent all the lyrics I used: 'I was blindfolded I'll ne'er deny' is a lift from a version of 'As I Roved Out One Bright May Morning'.

Note that in the Ballykissangle show in question the singer, although she has a lovely voice, utterly mangled the phrasing, singing 'what cannot be/ cured love must be endured /love tis his I'll be'. Painful.
