He was British but working at Radio Budapest and in addition to doing propaganda broadcasts in English would sometimes perform folk songs. He sang Love is Teasing having translated it into Hungarian. Unfortunately his translating skills were not as good as he had thought and the third line shown above came out in translation as: "But as love grows older the love hole grows colder" Needless to say the party were not impressed. (Read the lyrics to that song and you will understand the problem.) We could consider the song line by line. How old is the line "Love is teasing"? Well, I can find it in a song called LOVE'S A TYRANT that goes back at least to 1831: And ah! 'tis useless to complain: Though love is teasing, 'Tis also pleasing. And pleasure yields as well as pain. But I can't verify the line "love's a pleasure when first it's new" any further back than 1975; but the variant "love is a treasure when first it's new" goes back at least to 1957. However, in a slightly different form, it appeared in WALY, WALY, GIN LOVE BE BONNY back in 1714: O waly, waly, but love be bonny, A little time while it is new, But when 'tis auld it waxeth cauld, And fades away like the morning dew. I could keep going, but I don't think I could ever give you a simple answer. |

I expect she got it from a book (she certainly didn't get it from me, and it wasn't for lack of trying), so I'd guess it was published in the late 60s. |

The 1975 book I was referring to was "Folksongs of Britain and Ireland" edited by Peter Kennedy. The song there is #159: A HEALTH TO ALL TRUE-LOVERS, which has the chorus: So I'm a rover and seldom sober. I'm a rover of high degree. It's when I'm drinking I'm always thinking How to gain my love's company. But Kennedy also gives the following as an "alternative chorus": For love is teasin' and love is pleasin'. Love's a pleasure when first it's new. As we grow older, our love grows colder And fades away like the morning dew. In his chapter-end notes on page 380, he cites several sources for the song from 1924 to 1961, but it isn't clear which is the source for his "alternative chorus." |

It is actually a collection of 'floaters' or 'commonplaces' that occur in numerous different ballads going back mostly to the 17th century at least. The genre of songs that mostly harbours these floaters in particular is that of female laments of the 'Died for Love' family and the 'Must I go bound' family. It is possible to trace probable routes of evolution for each floater but this process with this genre has been going on for several centuries in all the English-speaking parts of the world so it couldn't possibly be an exhaustive study. If you are looking for a background to one of these floaters I might be able to help but Jim has already stated 'Waly Waly' which is at least 17th century, probably 16th century, and the verse in question may even be older than that. |

People (including me) heard it and learned it, and it spread from there. It didn't come down in her family though; the LP notes say she "learned it from an Irish girl in New York." She calls it "O Love Is Teasin'." At least within the American folk scene, I have not found any earlier version using that title. I think Jean probably deserves credit for introducing the song in the US. |

I much prefer the version she sings, with the apron being "to my knee". Why would an apron be up to someone's chin? It makes no sense. I imagine Bill D had herd the "chin" line in a folk club, as I have done, and in his memory he probably unconsciously merged those lyrics with the Jean Redpath ones that he'd heard earlier, to produce the amalgamated lyrics he posted. But I much prefer the lyrics Jean Redpath sings, which I posted in my previous post. |

I heard it often in Ireland as a child but I never heard a definitive set of verses. Bearing that in mind I took the liberty of rejigging the words to reflect the dramatic contest - ie the heroine of the show has rushed into marriage with the wrong man and now regrets it, and is casting soulful glances across the room to her true love, the parish priest. I didn't invent all the lyrics I used: 'I was blindfolded I'll ne'er deny' is a lift from a version of 'As I Roved Out One Bright May Morning'. Note that in the Ballykissangle show in question the singer, although she has a lovely voice, utterly mangled the phrasing, singing 'what cannot be/ cured love must be endured /love tis his I'll be'. Painful. |
