Got this thing about the letter B though.... Billy Bragg from Barking now lives in Burton Bradstock, only a few miles from the village I grew up in.

He can't sing. Why doesn't he get someone else to sing his songs?

It seems that anyone famous can 'write' their autobiography these days, even if they've hardly lived (I put 'write' in quotes as I suspect many of these books are ghost-written). Currently in the UK shops are 'autobiographies' of such people as actress/pop singer Billie Piper, singer (?)/'celeb' Kerry Katona and comedian Peter Kay, none of whom is yet out of their 20s (AFAIK). No doubt their fans will lap them up though, or so the publishers hope.

I saw Billy Bragg duetting at Glastonbury years ago with Paul Brady. It was a great gig. He was supposed to have done the gig with Nanci Griffith but she cried off with a sore throat. I suspect she didn't really want to be 'outsung' by the Bragg! :-)

As much as I aadmire Bragg's sentiments, I can't get worked up by English nationalism. All nationalism is by it's nature, exclusive, and by celebrating nationalism, gives an exagerated view of one's own difference from other people. We should be looking at things that unite us rather then seperate us. Why not a day celebrating rationality and reason. For this reason, I gave St George's Day a miss this year as I have done other years.

I realise the Scots have a strong feeling of identity; but is this a good thing? (I am half-Scots myself.)
