23 Dec 06 - 03:40 PM (#1917631) Subject: BS: A soggy, wet, green Christmas in Orillia From: Little Hawk That's what it looks like, and that's fairly typical. Yup, lots of rain, mud, wet leaves, and soggy lawns out there today. If the temperature drops a few degress tonight, we may even get driving sleet coming down! Oh boy! I am of the opinion that Christmas should be moved to January 25th. That would guarantee real full-blown winter weather and it would split the worst part of the year (weather-wise) neatly down the middle. And there'd be a MUCH shorter and more tolerable wait for Spring to come after it was over. |

That is the time of year when little weiner dogs go out (very reluctantly) to do their "business"...and after a bit you wonder what's happened to them...and you go outside yourself in the bitter cold and you find the little rascals frozen to the trunk of a tree with their leg still lifted and an agonized expression on their face. |

It's been drizzling for weeks, and although it's warm, it should be HOT. So much for my great idea of getting a family season pass to the pool this summer. |

Lots of rain today but no white stuff forecast. The White Christmas is all the fault of the cards showing those lovely scenes. Probably a look back to earlier times when there was snow in December - frost fairs on the Thames in London etc. Bing didn't help any either. LH - yep, I'd go with January 31st. That would work here, might even work in the UK sometimes. Two years running in the south of England there was, for the area, heavy snow on that day. |

24 Dec 06 - 01:01 PM (#1918215) Subject: RE: BS: A soggy, wet, green Christmas in Orillia From: Ebbie My grandmother always maintained that when it thunders the weather will become more extreme in its season, i.e., if it thunders in the wintertime it is going to get COLD and in summer it's going to be HOT. She also said 'A sunshiny shower won't last half an hour' and lots of things like that. When I was 7 or 8 years old and came into the room whistling she hurt my feelings by remarking 'Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad end'. It was not until years later that I remembered that she whistled all the time. In Juneau our snow has turned to rain. Most of the snow is gone and the landscape is white and grey. Looks cold but the thermometer says it is in the upper 30s. |

About 4 foot 10 and she sang and whistled and laughed- we kids loved her. There are a lot of stories of things she did early on. For instance, soon after they were married, my grandfather (a tall, silent man who charmed me by blushing when I teased him) went out to the barn. When he opened the door, my grandmother rolled out at his feet- she had hunched herself on the other side of the door. |

24 Dec 06 - 04:59 PM (#1918341) Subject: RE: BS: A soggy, wet, green Christmas in Orillia From: Metchosin We're green here with a temperature of 5 C. Sort of the usual fare for the season finally. We're suppossed to get winds of up to 80 kms today and I've got my fingers crossed that I'll still be able to cook Christmas dinner tomorrow for the family, without resorting to doing it outside on the BBQ in the rain and eating by candlelight. I'm sick of power outages. About 10 days ago we got hit hard in our area with sustained winds of 158 km and higher gusts off the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We finally got our power back Wednesday after almost a week of lugging firewood and buckets of water. It was exhausting and we're finally considering getting a generator. The older I get the harder it is to cope with this kind of stuff and still manage a smile. Twice in less than a month without power and water that drags into days frays the nerves as well as the muscles. This is the first time in over 30 years that I have actually been very scared. Now I know what is meant by wind sounding like a freight train. The cracking and whumping of falling trees were an added bonus. We fared better than some of our neighbours though, no damage to the house, only an outbuilding and a couple of garden sheds. Unfortunately though, in the aftermath, the tree service managed to fall a tree on our own power lines, bent our mast in two and ripped our power supply off the house as well as phone and cable. Good thing the power was still out at the road because, as well as smashed equipment and a bit of damage to the house, there were electrical lines everywhere. On the positive side we have enough downed trees to keep us in firewood for at least 4 or 5 years and at least with this last storm the temperature didn't dip to -12C. Enough of my whining, were all safe and sound here and except for sore backs, no one was hurt. It could have been way worse.....and the pony didn't die from drinking the water I lugged to him from the hot tub. Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year! |

Nova Scotia is pretty temperate, really, but two years ago we had a big hurricane, no power for 11 days, thousands of trees lost in the area, boats up on people's lawns, and that winter a 90cm snowfall hit us - had to shovel out for days. |
