26 Dec 06 - 10:15 PM (#1919620) Subject: RE: BS: So what do you love? Really love? From: JennyO I love knowing that I have lots of friends and family who love me and would miss me if I was gone. I love music. I love humour. I love being able to walk out in my garden and seeing things grow - experiencing the cycles of nature. I love the fact that I am alive to see it all and to breathe the air and smell the smells. I love being able to use all my senses to experience this thing called life. And most of all, I love the knowledge that I am a part of it all. My son gave me a VCR for Christmas because my old one had died and I have a lot of movies on video which I have not been able to watch for a while, and which would be hard to find otherwise. One of my most treasured movies, which I will find and watch again soon, is "The Seven Faces of Dr Lao", and one of the best quotes from a movie that I ever heard comes right at the end of this one, and captures for me the joy of being alive: "Mike, the whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand, every time you stop and think, 'I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!' Every time such a thing happens, Mike, you are part of the Circus of Dr. Lao." |
26 Dec 06 - 10:20 PM (#1919622) Subject: RE: BS: So what do you love? Really love? From: JennyO I just found a more complete quote which I must share, because I love it so much: Dr. Lao: "Mike, let me tell you something. The whole world is a circus if you know how to look at it. The way the sun goes down when you're tired, comes up when you want to be on the move. That's real magic. The way a leaf grows. The song of the birds. The way the desert looks at night, with the moon embracing it. Oh, my boy, that's... that's circus enough for anyone. Every time you watch a rainbow and feel wonder in your heart. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand. Every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you're part of the Circus of Dr. Lao." |

Really good food prepared together at home in our kitchen. Good live music. Performing a song and knowing I nailed it. Beautiful guitars. The town I live in. Having an experience that makes me know that there's absolutely nowhere else on earth I'd rather be at that moment. For instance, last summer I found myself in a session with Jim Malcolm, Aaron Jones, most of Solas, several other folks who are totally out of my league, my love by my side. Complete joy. |
27 Dec 06 - 03:28 PM (#1920048) Subject: RE: BS: So what do you love? Really love? From: Little Robyn Apart from the obvious - family, friends, animals etc. the sort of thing that really tingles the hairs on the back of my neck, makes me feel good to be alive, is standing in the middle of a singing session, doing unaccompanied, multi-harmony songs and feeling the music going right through you. It can happen in an orchestral concert too or even when you're playing along with a group of like-minded musicians, playing the sort of music you really enjoy. You walk away from it feeling totally revived, reborn, ready to take on the world once again. And if your loved one is by your side, that's a bonus. Robyn |

27 Dec 06 - 07:49 PM (#1920210) Subject: RE: BS: So what do you love? Really love? From: Bee-dubya-ell Since the title of this thread asks "...what do you love?", instead of "...whom do you love", I'm going to ignore the human beings whom I love and stick with the non-human. I don't love any physical objects, but I do love the experiences some objects help me enjoy. I love playing music and creating ceramic art, but I don't love my guitars or my potter's wheel. They're just tools to help me have creative experiences. It's the process that I love, not the tools nor even the completed project. I've created and sold thousands of pots, but I've yet to create a single piece that I've felt compelled to keep for my own. The one thing that could be considered a physical object that I will admit to loving is "my" land. I put "my" in quotes because while I have a deed that says I own it, I think of it as stewardship. As Dougie MacLean says, "You cannot own the land. The land, it owns you." It's actually more akin to a marriage than an owner/object relationship. |

27 Dec 06 - 11:18 PM (#1920301) Subject: RE: BS: So what do you love? Really love? From: Stilly River Sage BWL--I agree with your sentiment about the land on which you live. Mine hasn't been hit by hurricanes in the last few years like yours has, so it has been a little less work, though with a drought over the last two years I have had to work to it moist enough for the pooches out back and to keep my xeriscape from blowing away. I love the adjacent prairie and woods and creek at the bottom of the back yard--we actually saw a kingfisher hanging on a wire over the creek this week! With the birds and critters that choose to live here or pass through, we find ourselves rich with the experiences of seeing them on occasion. SRS |
