The world's greatest Dobro player was born on this date in Washington, D.C.

No knock on Jerry Douglas, but it's good to see another dobro player mentioned. I tried to tell my nephew about Mike Auldridge not long ago.

Mike Auldridge is a superb Dobro player, but as long as Jerry Douglas is around he is going to have to be content with being the second-greatest.

Sorry, GUEST, but much of what Jerry Douglas does is 'play notes'. Mike Auldridge has as much integrity than any musician I have ever heard. What Auldridge does is 'play music'. I put Douglas third, a bit behind Rob Ickes, who is getting better all the time.

I've had the privilege of having Mike play dobro (and pedal steel) on several of my recordings, and I want to go on record as saying that I've never met a more thoroughly prepared and truly professional session man,
and I've had a few.

He comes to the studio knowing the songs inside out, and can play what he has prepared, or to improvise brilliantly.

And he is amazingly flexible.

I booked him to play Dobro on a few songs once, and when he'd finished, he said that there was more time left, and asked if I'd like the pedal on another couple of songs. I was surprised and of course said yes.

He brought the pedal-steel in from the car, set it up and played brilliantly on a few songs he'd never heard before.

Mike is a true gentleman, and a delight to be around.

As for second-greatest, not in my book.

It's time to wish the world's greatest Dobro player a happy birthday once again.

Ickes, Auldridge, Douglas. You couldn't go wrong with any one of them.
Used to see Mr. A with Seldom Scene and The Country Gentlemen back in the 70's in the D.C. area. He was/is an exciting player. Happy Birthday, Mike.
