04 Jan 07 - 11:11 AM (#1926475) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA This is greenbelt! Thats the catch. Our reason (excuse) is that we need to live on the premises (stable yard) cos of the amount of horse thefts etc. in our area. When we built the stables we wanted the colour of the materials to blend in with the surrounding area, ie green. They made us have light grey with a blue roof - now thats barmy! |

He can talk, most of his jokes are other peoples. I've sent an engineer to Chile. He turned up on one flight and his tools (including a Hilti gun!) and luggage on another. He's on a one way ticket cos I don't know how long he'll be there. Police got suspicious and held him at the airport. When he finally got to site the materials had not arrived. 10 Jan 07 - 06:45 AM (#1932171) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump Ah, I can see the cause of the confusion now. Breezy uses the term "a capella" for singing without any instrument, and "unaccompanied" for performing alone with an instrument (e.g. guitar). I think I'm right in saying that most people (including me) would use "unaccompanied" to mean the same as "a capella", which is why some of you were confused by Breezy's use of "unaccompanied". I tend to use "solo" to refer to performing by myself, as opposed to in the band or duo (etc.) - I think that's less confusing, and you can use it in conjunction with "unaccompanied" or "a capella" if you like, to indicate performing unaccompanied on your own. That means you can sing unaccompanied with other people, using the definition above. Which sounds a bit strange, I admit... Blimey, I think I've confused myself now. |
10 Jan 07 - 07:03 AM (#1932180) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross Crikey Scrump Did you write all that unaccompanied At least no one has resorted to the 'playing with yourself' level of humour I went to Hatfield this morning and it was bucketing - sun is out in Redbourn now, though - I might take me jumper off I think JB does sing 'a capella' at Herga but I'm not sure if he leads or accompanies others or bans people from accompanying him - Lets ask him everybody JB........................ |

Strange, I replied to Ross's post yesterday but Mudcat seems to have eaten it. Unless it got blown away too? (Has anyone else ever had that happen? i.e. making a Mudcat posting only to find later on that it has vanished. It's happened to me a few times, but not often enough for me to be sure it's not finger trouble) |

Alan ########################################################################################### Thought you might like to know that there's a Barn Dance at Harpenden Public Halls on Saturday 27th January with Fiddlin' Around, caller Barry Goodman. The dance starts at 8:00 and finishes at 11:30, and costs just £8.00 a ticket. Fiddlin' Around are an exciting twin fiddle band put together by Junction 24 frontman/fiddler Brian Stone with the intention of developing a high energy acoustic string sound that is also uplifting and exciting to dance to. The two fiddlers work together so that an interplay of both rhythmic and melodic variations will produce a dynamic flow of exhilerating fiddling. The band is keen on promoting the interest/popularity in French Canadian and Cape Breton music as well as music from New England and North America. The dance is promoted by English Miscellany, who will provide a display-spot at the interval. Hope to see some of you there! Cheers, Barry Barry Goodman 54, Ickleford Road, Hitchin, Herts. I was at our gaff to see Jez Lowe - great evening, with a cracking support set from "Moses and the Ref". I thought I had the night off so didn't bring my guitar, but unexpectedly had to play a song (to accompany Alan) at Jez's request, and Steve "The ref" kindly lent me his guitar (I couldn't borrow Jez's because his is left handed, and I would have had to stand on my head and face the wall to play that). Jez lent me his plectrum though (I nearly said pick but I thought you lot would start making jokes about digging up the car park). |

It's like the old days when you used one of your stockings as a temporary fanbelt. Mind you - I will have done it all wrong in somebody's book - either killed the clematis or bent the trellis. |

FRIDAY 26th JANUARY 2007 - FENDRAGON Fendragon are a ceilidh band based in Cambridge, who play traditional English folk music, with some Irish, Scottish, French and American influences. They are a popular feature of the local ceilidh scene, and in demand further afield. Mary Humphreys (keyboards) and Anahata (melodeons) are both well-known, and here they have teamed up with Dave Holland (fiddle) and Gina Holland (flute), to create a versatile band that love playing for dances. "Lovely stuff" according to Verity Sharp, BBC Radio 3 More information at http://www.fendragon.co.uk The Caller for the evening is the young and effervescent Andrew Swaine, also from Cambridge. Andrew believes that ceilidh dancing '…is lively, accessible and unencumbered, a living tradition of community dancing for fun. Enjoyment is more important than accuracy'! http://www.swaine.me.uk/ The interval entertainment this month is from the Brafront Guizers, who will perform their particularly off-beat but definitely seasonal Mummers Play at Hitchin! http://tdrg.group.shef.ac.uk/Gallery/Brafront2004.htm Unicorn Ceilidhs take place generally on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin, Herts. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8.00 p.m. start, with an 11.30 p.m. finish – entry is only £8.00 for adults and £4 for children under 14. (Check out the shirts). Why are so many folkies called Dave, Derek and Martin? Enjoy your evening. It was a nice evening at Dunstable yesterday. I hadn't seen Bert or Pat since the New Year and it was good to catch up on Winter weather on a houseboat. They will be at Barton next week. How late into 2007 can you still say Happy New Year to people without looking like you're a nerd with a comic relief red nose on your car 6 months after the event? And to finish the News with the weather report - snow has melted away in sunny Stevenage. I was very thoughtful and cleared the snow off my husband's car windows this morning. It was great fun - I wanted to do the whole cul de sac. BTW. A white van marked 'Data Agency' or suchlike drove at a snail's pace in, around and out of the road yesterday lunchtime. Very disconcerting. What information do you think they could they be collecting? |

I bet the flowers run and hide when they see him coming. |
25 Jan 07 - 08:14 AM (#1947503) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Yes Cathie, I too would be worried about Ross, anyone who makes a living from measuring bricks has to be watched very carefully. Could the room be full of lonely Dyson's on a night out? |
25 Jan 07 - 08:21 AM (#1947505) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump I don't understand what all the problem is with measuring bricks. I thought they were all roughly the same size (approx 9" x 3" x 4.5" or something like that). Why not just measure one, then say the rest are all the same size as that, and you could take the rest of the day off? |
25 Jan 07 - 09:08 AM (#1947533) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Well exactly - I think it may be a cover for something else. Measuring up bricks, hoovering up the stars ????????????? something not quite right there. |

I'm not going to Redbourn or Sandy tonight - I'm going to Winkwell Did the Daleks evolve from a vacuum cleaner? Cheers for the joke PA |

Can highly recommend them fantastic voices and harmonies, great humour, mainly shanties and songs about some bloke call John Barleycorn (who's he? he wasn't very popular, loads of people wanted to kill him). Guest appearance from Malcolm the Mallard, who joined in on a song about a dog called Timmy who sank a ship. Very sad song about horses in the first world war, they almost couldn't sing it. Great night. In two weeks we got two chaps who play guitars and stuff and then two weeks after that we've got George. Nasty day here sleet, grey skies, very cold and people driving around with no lights on at 7.30 in the morning. Off to Gt Yarmouth tomorrow and back in the same day. Must be mad. Loads of work to do. Well, that's my view and I'm sticking to it - there are probably lots of other interpretations (there always are when it comes to these old folk songs :-)) Glad you had a good time at the folk club. Our gig went down OK, although there weren't as many people there as we hoped for. Still, it must have been OK because the landlady gave us a 'wee dram'. Another one tonight, this time we're doing a PTA barn dance in a village hall - more neeps, tatties and haggis (not sure if we'll get any free malt whisky this time though! But fingers crossed... :-D) I'm not planning to eat haggis, neeps or tatties this weekend - I'll have had my fill of 'em by then. |

29 Jan 07 - 06:01 PM (#1951695) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Cathie I was a travelling folkie yesterday and enjoyed the Folkaholics very much at Winkwell. You all were very well received by the customers and bar staff. The photos I took aren't too bad, so I could print some, forge signatures and go round the pub selling them. It all sounded very spirited, yet unobtrusive. The range of instruments and songs added variety, the songs were a mixture of humourous and serious and there were opportunities for all there to join in from time to time. Allan was brilliant. I am glad you enjoyed the evening Scrump. His song about the man with the cracked china cups who had problems breathing really caught me unawares - thank goodness he had given me my tissues back by then. A lot of the other songs he sang were on his last CD and it was good to hear them live again. On the ground reporter Cathy Clipboard Q. What does a folkie want with two Dysons? Only John Breeze knows the answer. |

30 Jan 07 - 04:39 AM (#1952111) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA I really can think of better ways of keeping warm!! I went to Ipswich on Saturday and on the way back I saw a sign for Bedford!! Not sure where I was when I saw it I think I was on the A14. Can I be the travel reporter please. |
30 Jan 07 - 06:02 AM (#1952156) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross Sure can PA - what are you like in a helicopter? Our weather girl on Look East is called Sally Weather and she does everything apart from tell you the weather We see her dancing and singing and visiting exotic places and generally playing I'm a celebrity Local news is often shelved in favour of more worldly news with tenuous links - if a war breaks out anywhere, then you can bet that the key players would have either gone to school in Norwich or carry handbags made in Suffolk A14 - thats just up the B28938 |
30 Jan 07 - 07:43 AM (#1952226) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA In a helicopter? well much the same as I am on the ground? We have the weather but no news, Midlands Today concentrates on Wolverhampton and the local newspaper reports on Droitwich which is miles away. I didnt realise Suffolk is the handbag manufacturing centre of the world, must admit I didnt notice much handbag carrying on my journey. Lots of big lorries though, maybe they kept their handbags in the glove compartment, along with their gloves. The question is - what do you keep in your glove compartment? Travel news, please do not go too fast along Pikes Pool Lane, because the part that goes down hill under the byepass has gone lumpy and you will take off! |
30 Jan 07 - 10:44 AM (#1952415) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross I don't use my glove compartment - it could be an entry point to Narnia for all I know My car is filthy - how do you cure this problem? Suffolk handbags are the finest in the world - made from the finest larks vomit - finely woven by trained Look East presenters Do they still call it the black country (Wolverhampton) or isn't that PC anymore? |
30 Jan 07 - 11:31 AM (#1952501) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Narnia sounds like fun, perhaps Midlands Today could report from there. Cure for muckey car - big bottle of washing up liquid and a power washer. The black country is a very scarey place just on the edge of the forgotten forest, my husband travels there every day to the land of the big yellow digger. He get up very early before the border guards are awake. |
30 Jan 07 - 11:53 AM (#1952529) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump That's strange - our weather girl on Look East is called Julie Weather. We must get a different Look East from you. |
30 Jan 07 - 03:00 PM (#1952753) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Cathie Oh Scrump, now you've done it. Ross has a 50 Best Weather Girls count down from the last ... years. 31 Jan 07 - 03:39 AM (#1953215) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Or chuck them both in the bin and get a real one. |
31 Jan 07 - 03:48 AM (#1953221) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross Hi Scrump - you could be right - Sally might be on Anglia News - I have attention deficiency problems I generally watch them both in tandem, so it all becomes a blur It might even be Wendy Weather - whether she will or whether she won't? Narnia's not fun - it's like St Albans - always winter and never Christmas IT'S THE BULL TONIGHT - 31ST February tomoorow |
31 Jan 07 - 04:10 AM (#1953235) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump Blimey, I didn't even know there were 50 weather girls! I assume, Ross, that your list was based purely on their ability to accurately predict the weather? :-) |
31 Jan 07 - 04:30 AM (#1953252) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Does everyone in St Albans live in wardrobes and talk to lions. Anyone remember Wincy Willis or the 'F' in fog! |
31 Jan 07 - 04:42 AM (#1953261) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump Blimey, I can remember Wincey Willis - she was on ITV or C4 breakfast TV, wasn't she? I did watch that for a while back in the 1980s. I don't have time these days though. [I'm doing a support spot with Alan tonight and I'll be singing my new traditional song about a young fiddler who discovers an old traditional song he heard in his youth in a pub. No time to learn the words though, even though I wrote them :-) ] |
31 Jan 07 - 04:51 AM (#1953271) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross I used to like Live TV They used to have the weather in Swedish and then they had a dwarf pointing ro a weather map bouncing on a trampoline Also topless darts and Tiffany's big city tips where she used to read out the financail news whilst removing her blouse What a cahnnel - I wonder why it flopped The British public are so fical Wincey Willis - don't remember, but then I spent most of the 80's in Swaziland which was not disimilar to Narnia Good luck tonight Scrump - everyone at Barton will be rooting for ya |
31 Jan 07 - 05:22 AM (#1953292) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Well I never did is that the kind of tele you have down south. Is it digital or cable. I suppose thats because they too have lions in Swaziland and they talk to them - "please Mr Lion, don't eat me" Were you measuring bricks there. Were they made of poo (cant spell dung) and mud. |
31 Jan 07 - 05:57 AM (#1953309) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Scrump That reminds me of an old Spine Milligna* joke: Q. What's brown and sounds like a bell? A. Dunggggggggggggggg! * the well-known typing error ...I'll get me coat. |
31 Jan 07 - 06:46 AM (#1953334) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: The PA Q. Whats brown and stickey? A. A stick. .........fetch mine while you're there. |
31 Jan 07 - 07:31 AM (#1953365) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross The Queen Mother in Swaziland was called the Great She Elephant I think the King was something to do with a lion - he had to kill a lion as part of his coronation - I went to his coronation garden party - I drank while Africa burned - ha ha he he The Africaans used to make their floor screed with cow poo & mud - you can get a really creamy pliable building material from natures finest (and it doesn't smell) What's blue and slips down the table - Chelsea |
01 Feb 07 - 03:52 AM (#1954290) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Ross Cheers everyone - what a great night Thanks to Na Mara (Rob & Pat), Geoff, Davina, Jessie, Yvonne, Rita, Bert, Pat, MK John, Tony, Hitchin John, Jeff, Steve, Keith, Roy, Fred, Lorna, Nat, Cathy, Derek, Bob and Leona February thread coming soon It's Redbourn open stage tonight - 1st - Folkaholics will be there |
02 Feb 07 - 07:17 PM (#1956107) Subject: RE: New Year at the Bull, Barton-in-mud,Beds From: Cathie Hello to any stray weekenders. Two thirds of Folkaholics were better than none. Very good in fact. An exciting night at The Cricketers. Q. When is a mobile phone allowed to ring during a folk session? A. To allow up-to-the-minute breaking news of the actions of bomb disposal units in the surrounding locality.(as long as the singing carries on - bit like Carry On up the Khyber really - as Redbourn fell to the rebels on the common, strains of 'where have all the flowers gone' floated harmoniously through the eerie silence).
