Sacramento jams/links: Fortunato visits

'Catters, folkies, old time, et al.

I'm working in Sacramento CA today and will be in coming weeks, in and out for 4 months or so.

So of course I'm looking to see, hear and hear local music, and if possible jam with area folks.

Hello, hello, is anyone out there?

cheers,
chance

I lived in Sacramento up until a few months ago, but there never seemed (to me) to be much there. That said, check out the Fox and Goose, downtown. They have a decent (and usually crowded) open mic night every Monday, hosted by Dave Baldwin, who is a top-notch guitar player, and you frequently see some pretty good musicians there (although, obviously they're not all folkies). On every third (I think) Thursday night, there's also an open Irish jam, which is pretty decent, though not at the level of some I've seen in Cincinnati. I've heard that there are some open blues jams, too.

Try checking Craigslist if you don't hear much from people here. There's some decent stuff out there if you look for it, but it can be hard to find.

P.S. If you come to Cincinnati, PM me. There's some cool stuff happening here musically.

My brother is an old-time and all-around great folkie and lives in Placerville, not too terribly far away. Do you have transportation?

He's lived in the central Sierra foothills area for 30 years, so I'm sure he would have other contacts as well. PM me for a phone number, or if you'd like me to call him for you (sorry, he's also an old timer in the lifestyle sense and is therefore without e-mail).

Hi Chance
Have a great visit. I'm sure Joe will be visiting this thread after all you'll be in his home town & I know he has a singing circle going on at the very least. I don't know how far from Chico you'll be but there's a session there to. t may be a good distance though.
Enjoy the better weather.

Barry

Sorry I don't know where places are in Caifornia, except in a general way. Are any of the above mentioned near Salinas? I have a friend who just moved there and is bemoaning the lack of all kinds of things. I know she'd be interested in any music to-do's.

Thanks,

kat

Salinas is a long-ass drive from Sacramento. I wouldn't recommend making the trip just for the open mics/jams/etc--there's probably something closer. Your friend should check the music ads and craigslist to see if there are any interesting get-togethers in her area--that's what I did in Cincinnati, and I found some great stuff.

thanks, all. I've contacted Joe and I hope to get to his song sessions in coming weeks and get together with him.

Barry, chum, Joe's turned me on (ahem) to anothe good session in town and things are looking up.

the weather in Sacramento is quite nice for winter, but it's been mild back in DC as well.

cheers thanks, carry on...

I told Chance about a wonderful song circle in Davis that's frequented by Dick Holdstock and other fine musicians. There's also a slow jam I can lead him to. the three song circles I attend are more oriented toward amateur community singing, relying chiefly on Rise Up Singing. I wish I could attend the Davis session like I used to, but I moved to far away to go regularly.
I suppose it's the case everywhere - there are sessions you can speak of publicly, and others that you have to know somebody to get to. When sessions are hosted in homes, people sometimes don't want their addresses and phone numbers listed on the Internet.
