Azizi, I've found your forum to be an excellent and fun read and good resource.

Jim Lad, kendall was right on that other thread. Took me over an hour to download Peter Kagan & The Wind on a dial-up, but it was worth it. Absolutely wonderful. I've had the Gordon Bok album since it was new, and you've still made me cry. You understand the heart of it. I would buy a CD or two in a New York minute, but downloading is tough!

Anyone feel like booking a noisy ceilidh band, complete with disco lights?

Or if you fancy something more subdued, PM me and I'll find some other musicians to work with.

If you live in or near Cheshire UK I'll give you a good time

Ok so one step on from this thread is, can we all help each other out with gigs in our respective parts of the world? Are we all struggling? Do we all send Email after Email begging some clubs and fests to consider us now please. Hard work isn't it? How about putting on a 'Cat' concert and raise some money for a charity or something?

One more piece of shameless self-promotion!

The Not-So-Odd Couple…

Steve Suffet & Holly GoAnarchy

They met long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. His birth name is Stephen Lawrence Suffet. Hers is Holley Anderson. Holly calls herself an anarcho-feminist folksinger-songwriter. Steve wakes up in a cold sweat each night wondering what life under feminist anarchy would be like, but then falls back to sleep comforted in the realization that at least the music will be lots of fun.

Steve calls himself an old-fashioned folksinger. Holly calls him a folk legend. Steve says, "I can live with that."

Holly's signature song is Why Am I Not a Lesbian? Steve has never felt the need to ask himself that question.

Holly has performed many times at Brooklyn's renowned Vox Pop Coffee House on Cortelyou Road. Steve once landed a five-day gig at Brooklyn's
renowned House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue. He wasn't there on a research project.

Holly lives in a beautiful old house in Brooklyn with a group of friends and their children. Steve lives in an anything-but-beautiful old house in Queens with his wife Marilyn and whatever musicians, writers, photographers, etc., are passing through New York on any given day.

Holly has a two-year old son who is a rather gifted interpretive dancer. Steve has a thirty-six year old daughter who is a rather gifted high school assistant principal.

Holly is the epitome of cool. Steve is the epitome of overweight.

Could this be the beginning of a beautiful musical friendship? Or is it just witty advertising copy? Come see how this drama plays out and help Holly and Steve prove to the house that, yes, they can fill seats.

Hello all:

Here's my current working ensemble:

www.myspace.com/theskirmish

Comments on The Skirmish, a pub-friendly goodtime Celtic band in eastern Ontario, have ranged from:

"You guys made the afternoon just perfect with just the right energy and songs" (Jenny Whiteley)

to: "I've seen bands way worse than you guys playing at the Irish Village" (anonymous audience member, St Pat's Day show)

I just found an old demo tape from the early 90's of myself and James Stephens, back when we were The Seldom Heard. I had forgotten about this 4-track cassette, but I like it so much I dug out the master, digitized it, and put it on a new myspace page:

www.myspace.com/theseldomheard

I haven't added much content other than the two songs yet, and far too little credit is given to the brilliant fiddling and engineering of James Stephens, but this is a work in progress. Far and away the best recording of my song "The Anna Grace".

Steve Robinson's new CD, "Undercurrent" is now available --with a Money Back Guarantee, no less-- at Miles Of Music

What they're saying...

"One of the better discs of 2007 that I've heard" --Stephen Ferra, Absolute Powerpop

"'Undercurrent' is often gorgeously melodic - the ballad 'Love Is Real' borders on majestic - and Robinson's clear, controlled tenor is the perfect conduit" --Eric Snider, Creative Loafing

"Great guitars, great harmonies and awesome lyrics" --Johanna Bodde, Insurgent Country (The Netherlands)

"Elegantly crafted Beatlesque folk-rock of the highest calibre" --Rob Lincoln, CD reviewsonline.com

"His songwriting and guitar playing are, as his label suggests, drenched in sunshine" --David Cowling, Americana UK

"Why don't you write something that sounds like Maroon 5?" -Denise Robinson

Was that shameless enough?
Cheers to all,
Steve R.

Subject: RE: SHAMELESS PROMOTION
From: Suffet

From the Old-Fashioned Folksinger...

I was born and raised in East Virginia early on a frosty morning. My Daddy was a miner, and I'm a miner's son. My Mama would rock me in the cradle, but I left home when I was just nine days old. That's when I picked up a shovel and I walked to the mine. The captain said, "I got me a steam drill round," so I told my captain, "Your men a-gonna leave you" and I said farewell to Nova Scotia, that sea bound coast. Then I traveled all over this country, a-digging, prospecting for gold. I found rocks and gravel make a mighty fine road, so with a ten dollar horse and a twenty dollar saddle they sent me to New Bedford, that famous whaling port. But I caught me the end of a long freight train and fanned my tail to the Oregon line. I was walking down the track with tears in my eyes, trying to read a letter from my home, when along comes the sheriff from Cornersville saying, "Pay me or go to jail." Well, I ran so fast the hounds couldn't catch me, down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. So if you ever see me coming back, I'll extend to you my paw, but it's gonna be through a telescope from the great Atlantic Ocean to the wide Pacific shore.

Now if you detect even the remotest grain of truth buried beneath all that woofing and whooping, why not come find out for yourself? I'll be appearing with my good buddy, the Bronx Cowgirl Anne Price at the Vox Pop Cafe in Brooklyn, New York, on the evening of December 8, and then at the Yippie Museum Cafe in Manhattan one week later. Admission to both places is free, but we would certainly welcome musicians' tips and CD purchases.

Ballydehob Jazz Festival 2010

Taking place in the open air, or in bars and other local venues. (West Cork, Republic of Ireland)

April 30th- May 3rd 2010 - Seventeen acts will feature across the programme with Michael Buckley, widely acclaimed as the one of the most important and influential musicians to arrive on the Irish jazz scene in recent times, performing in a headline concert at 8pm on Saturday 1st May.
Ballydehob is also happy to welcome Andreas Varady, a 12 year old Hungarian jazz guitar prodigy from Limerick, who will be playing with his father, Ondrej. Andreas is expected to be world class and his talent is already drawing wide attention.

The festival now in its fourth year is going from strength to strength. Most performances are free and either take place in the open air, or in bars and other local venues for a more intimate experience. Outdoor activities also include childrens entertainment, street theatre, busking competitions, and a market traders fair adding to the carnival spirit.

The festival retains an international flavour with artists hailing from various European destinations, and the music covers a broad range of traditional and contemporary jazz styles. There will be over 30 performances and the full line-up includes:

Michael Buckley
Andreas Varady
Austin Durack
De-Hally-Bob Guitar Club
Cork City Jazz Band
Corks Got Talent
Darktown Strutters
Dawn and Dusk
Earthship
The Fireflies
Ikarumba
Les and Sam Clague
Molly O’Mahoney and Norman Collins
The Samuel Hudson Quartet
Skazz
Some Like It Hot
The Swing Kings

We are Mice in a Matchbox; a new duo consisting of Sally Stamford, a well known singer, and Jim Rolt, guitarist/vocalist with roots in soul and rock music. Together we form an exciting and interesting acoustic blend of styles with the lyrical and evocative vocals of Sally merging with Jim's punchy guitar work and harmonies. We breathe new life into songs with a wide radius, from folk to reggae, and will definitely get your toes tapping and your fingers snapping!

Most of our early song learning and practicing was done at sea, and in various anchorages between the Caribbean and the UK
