Note: I was a little boy living as a military dependent in Japan when this song was new. At the time, it seemed as if every young woman in Japan spent all her spare time singing it. There was one time on the Ginza when a group of at least 50 to 100 were all singing it together.

OK, I was driving along in the dark, a chill rain coming down, and this song came to mind. I went online when I got to work, and found THIS set of lyrics. NOT exactly what I had heard before.

When did the additional lines about Louisiana get chopped off?

Anyone ever heard this version?

^^
Written by former Louisiana State Governor Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell; Copyright 1940 and 1977 by Peer International Corporation. This song is one of two official songs for the State of Louisiana.

You Are My Sunshine

My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away

The other nite, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all some day;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

Louisiana my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
-- green fields clover,
the best fishing
and long tall corn;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
the finest oysters
and sweet strawberries
from Toledo Bend to New Orleans;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

btw, HERE is what I am used to:

Ray Charles Lyrics - You Are My Sunshine Lyrics

The other night

Held you in my arms
Well, but when I woke up this morning
I found out I was mistaken
Do you know that I hung my

(when skies are grey)
Umm, you'll never never never know dear
(you'll never know, dear)
How much I love you
(how much I love you)
Whoa, and I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
My sunshine away
(shine away)

You told me once, dear,
That you really loved me
And no one else

(you are my sunshine)
Ohh, my only sunshine
(my only sunshine)

(don't take my sunshine)
Umm-hmm, if you need me
(don't take my sunshine)

I familar with the first set of lyrics except when it gets to the part about Louisana. I suspect that part was added later. I could be wrong.

Ray Charles Lyrics - I had heard the other, earlier versions, but this was the first one I got that was the lyrics I was used to. I have heard it sung mostly the repeat of the lines in the chorus ( although without the "whoa"s 8-{E )

It LOOKS like the verses about Louisiana were added in 1977- but I have never heard a version that included them. I looked over the earlier threads, but no mention of them.

is it possible those extra lyrics were related to the song's use in a campaign for governor or is that just "Oh brother...." revisionism?

Certainly possible.

The original (?) writer did become governor.

"This song is one of two official songs for the State of Louisiana."

Also, there are some variations on the more commonly known verses-

Norman Blake

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

chorus:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

ch.

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

ch.

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

ch.

Limpit and I had our own version when she was but a babe in nappies (diapers)...

You make me happy, when skies are pink.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you,
Even though there are some days you stink.

I can tell you why this verse...

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day...

went into the circular file. It's because it sounds like a threat, and people are sick of that kind of thing.

My newspaper had a long article recently about the good news that abuse of "intimate partners" is noticeably down. This is a long-term trend, the result of 30-40 years of society paying attention to this problem.

So that's some good news for Saturday, March 17th.

...and there was I, believing that Oliver Hood, prior to 1933, was the most likely source of this song!!

Oliver Hood was a music teacher at the blind school in Georgia, and there he met up with George Rice a blind boy who went there. In 1933 Hood wrote a song and knew that the tune was older than that. There have been other songs that have words to the same tune but no one knows them now. In that year boys and girls sung this in class lessons often with Hood's piano but the more well known words we know appeared in 1939 and the song was first sung by a group calld The Pineridge Boys. The song got new words written by Jimmy Davis and Charles Mitchell. These words were the song we know now as You Are My Sunshine. Davis was riding on a horse named Sunshine with that this song has been covered so many times. In 1987 the comedy O Brother Where Art Thou used this song on the show that my father would watch. In 1999 I sang and played it later with my former girlfriend Lissa. In Covid times there have been words such as You are The Vaccine to help raise fundsin Britain. If anyone knows who the writer of the 1897 version is could they post it here? The song we know today seems to derive from the 1939 version. The schools all over England and Sccoland have sung this song after the news of a teacher who taught in a school in Georgia in 1933 but folk do not know that the tune from 1887 was older than the 2 other versions. It is special to me as I was at the Royal Blind school myself in the 1908s and we sung it there.

The song You Are My Sunshine was written in 1931 by a blind school teacher called Oliver Hood. He first played this song to the kids at the blind school in Louisiana and got the kids to sing the first recording of this song. The song was older the words that hood rote in 1931 is now the most popular. Though Jimmy Davis put his own but it all comes back when folks talk about this song don't think that Davis was the writer of this song. Joe.

Oliver Hood was born in 1888 in Pittsburgh USA to a poor family. He was blind from birth but the thing that was on his mind was music there was no recordings to play music but the piano was a big thing in his time. In 1900 the blind school from Pittsburgh USA was a school that was so popular and had so many children. In 1913 he asked to be a teacher at the school and the success was great. One of his pupils was George Rice - he was so great at what he did and later became a singer in his own writing songs. In 1921 he was for the folk music scene putting new words to old songs set to the tunes of 18 century folk songs many country music singers like Vernon Dalhart, Riley Puckett and others. A song Hood did write that did not have claims of authorship was You Are My Sunshine the first 1933 vesion of this song by the Hood choir has now forgotten all because the words that were sung were not referring to what we know this song today. New techniques like talking computers fore the blind would not know Hood's first song at all. When Paul Rice wrote his new set of words in 1937 he wrote it on behalf of his wife going to hospital. The first recording was by the Pine Ridge boys in 1939 just a month later the Rise Brothers recorded it that recording is still available still to hear today. Hood knew Rice very well before he died in 1965 he was hearing storeys about Jimmie Davis saying to Paul Rice that Davis did have nothing to do with writing this song at all. This is the song that we know today was written by Rice
