That's a link to an article about a pirate named Anne Bonny. I was wondering if anyone knows of any songs written about her. The article I read in a book painted a lot more gruesome picture of her than this piece does. Seems like she would have been sung about at some time. Interesting history.

She used to disguise & pass off her ship as a Whaler---Hence " The Bonny Ship The Diamond ". Sorry !

There was an early or mid seventies B.B.C. children's series which was (extremely) loosely based on her exploits. It had a sung theme tune which may or not have been traditional.
Believe the programme may have been called,simply,"Bonny"

The piratesinfo articles probably do need updating a bit, but there are some posters on the piratesinfo forum who really know what they are talking about. I don't believe there are any traditional songs about Bonny and Read, in fact the only really period info we get of them other than court records is from the book "the General History of the most Notorious Pirates" written by Captain Charles Johnson, about 20 years after their death. This book is still in print, although some editions are credited to Daniel Defoe, as Johnson was thought to be a psuedonym of his for a time, an idea which is now widely discredited.

But yeah, no trad songs, although a few modern ones are about.

I think she used to have black hair - hence the song Bonny Black Hare.

When she got old her hair went white - hence the song Bonny White Hare :-)
