Why every one wants to eat a burnt supper every Jan 25th is a mystery.

But not as much a mystery as why they'd want to eat haggis...

Well, it's not really his birthday. He was out collecting famous birthdays and he borrowed it. Just tweaked the dates a little and put his own name to it you know.

Ode Tae A Fart

Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie
Lurks in your belly efter the feastie
Just as ye sit doon among yer kin
There sterts to stir an enormous wind
The neeps and tatties and mushy peas
Stert workin like a gentle breeze
But soon the puddin wi the sauncie face
Will have ye blawin all ower the place

Nae matter whit the hell ye dae
A'body's gonnae hiv tae pay
Even if ye try tae stifle
It's like a bullet oot a rifle
Hawd yer bum tight tae the chair
Tae try and stop the leakin air
Shifty yersel fae cheek tae cheek
Prae tae God it doesnae reek

But aw yer efforts go assunder
Oot it comes like a clap o thunder
Ricochets aroon the room
Michty me a sonic boom
God almighty it fairly reeks
Hope I huvnae shit my breeks
Tae the bog I better scurry
Aw whit the hell it's no ma worry

A'body roon aboot me chokin
Wan or two are nearly bokin
I'll feel better for a while
Cannae help but raise a smile
Wiz him! I shout with accusin glower
Alas too late, he's just keeled ower
Ye dirty bugger they shout and stare
A dinnae feel welcome any mair

Where e'ere ye go let yer wind gan' free
Sounds like just the job fur me
Whit a fuss at rabbie's party
Ower the sake o one wee farty

I am a bit miffed by Waitrose selling a vegetarian Haggis?!? Can it truly be called a Haggis?

I can't seem to find any Scotch Pies in NW London UK :( I really fancy one of them with baked beans. Oh well, I got me Haggis just gotta get some neeps, tatties & Drambuie.

Anyway... I cant remember... is there a special blessing for the Haggis?... It's a long time since I went to a Burns night celebration!!!

Scots English
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' yet tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin was help to mend a mill
In time o'need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut you up wi' ready sleight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin', rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
Bethankit! hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad make her spew
Wi' perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckles as wither'd rash,
His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash;
His nieve a nit;
Thro' blody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll mak it whissle;
An' legs an' arms, an' hands will sned,
Like taps o' trissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer
Gie her a haggis!

Well, it's obviously not a real haggis, but a replica made out of mashed veggie substances. Presumably it has the advantage that they don't have to pluck, gut and stuff it like they do with the real ones :-)

I wish to heck there was some easier way to understand his poetry for the poetry-challenged. Last Burns Day I looked on a Burns site at some of it, and I couldn'g make hide nor hare of most of it. The "farty" one sort of makes sense. Perhaps it has to be lowbrow for me to get it. THAT is somewhat disconcerting.

Did you know that haggis can be right- or left- handed? It depends which way they run round the Munro: the legs grow unevenly so that they can stay upright on the steep slopes. For obvious reasons, once this process starts they can't turn round and run the other way.

Amazingly, they were offering haggis & neeps (although they spelled it 'neaps'!) for our school dinner today! Even more amazingly, lots of the boys were eating it!   Sadly no whisky though.

No bribe. It was just there and lots of them asked for it - AND ate it! The alternative hot main courses were roast chicken and pasta in some kind of tomatoey sauce. They probably thought it was burgers in bits or something (it wasn't still in its skin)

O, my luve’s like a red, red rose,
  That’s newly sprung in June:
O, my luve’s like the melodie
  That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
  So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
  ’Till a’ the seas gang dry.

’Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
  And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
  While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!
  And fare thee weel a-while!
And I will come again my luve,
  Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.

Nice one Rab:)

Well, I suppose I'll have some of the stuff my friend Alice brought me from Kentucky. Barrowmore or something. Scottish as all hell.

For dinner I had smoked Vermont ham, potatoes and onions, freshly made biscuits, butter.

There IS haggis in the freezer. Last Fall I was out walking in the hills when I was attacked by a herd of haggii. Wild ones, all covered in hair and with teeth as long as my arm. Fortunately, I had my trusty rifle (never a trifle rusty) with me and I was able to pump 117 rounds of dum-dum ammunition into the Alpha Female and she dropped dead at my feet -- in fact, one of her fangs, drippinng poison, was in the leather of my boot sole (and it still is). With the death of their leader the others fled back to their lair, and I dressed out the one I'd shot (I ALWAYS eat what I shoot -- trees, rocks, cow pies, paper, whatever). She dressed out at an even 37 kilos and scored 457.8723 points in the Boone & Crockett Club -- only 102.86 points shy of an Idaho record!

As I was driving home tonight under a full moon I hear the herd of haggii howling in the hills. Their mournful cries sounded for all the world like someone either strangling a pig or playing the piobrach.

I think I'll go have a wee drap.

When chapmen billies leave the street,
And drouthy neibors, neibors meet,
As market days are wearing late,
An' folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
And getting fou and unco happy,
We think na on the lang Scots miles,
The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,
That lie between us and our hame,
Where sits our sulky sullen dame.
Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.

My Uncle Donald collided with a haggis while driving up behind Ben Lawers. The two right feet came in through the windshield and knocked out both of his front teeth. The doctors said "Just a couple of inches higher and it would have scalped him". My Auntie Jessie gave chase with the dogs but they lost it in the bracken. She says there wasn't a mark on it but the Morris Minor's a right off.

Robert Burns was born in Scotland, he lived in the same county as me Ayrshire, and it is in SCOTLAND we celabrate it more than the English.
Mind you they might have burns suppers do there as well. Mind you when you see a Scotsman with a kinfe in his hand stabbing a haggis, the English suddenly become Scots.

The Waitrose haggis is mcsweeny and is by definition the best haggis in the world - be it meat ot vegi.    When I stopped eating meat three years ago I thought it would be haggis that I would miss but these ones are really, really good.   In Edinburgh you can get individual ones which you can freeze.

Having my Burns night tonight.    Bit worried as I very rarely cook for anyone other than myself and have 7 coming ( and some people coming to view the house two hours before that !)
