25 Jan 07 - 11:58 AM (#1947714) Subject: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Mudcat 2007 Alternative British Folk Awards - Nominations! 2007 sees the fifth year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. For all of the last 5 years (with the exception of 2006, when I couldn't be bothered to count the votes) a completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below. Your nominations are sought for this year's folk spectacular.
Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
A number of SPECIAL AWARDS are also traditionally included in the ceremony (see below for examples). Your suggestions and nominations for any special categories will be considered by the committee.
The "Two In A Bar Award" for the best nonexistent Session/Singaround
please PM me with nominations etc. by 1st March 2007 so that voting can commence in good time for the awards to be published on the now-traditional date of 1st April.
Nominations ASAP please. |

26 Jan 07 - 07:22 AM (#1948507) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Just to try and explain something ... the categories labelled "non-commercial" are so we don't end up voting for people who are on the radio every week (no names ...). This is because these are ALTERNATIVE awards. Up and coming bands, down and out bands, any old bunch of drunken gits ... you can nominate what you choose. And in any category you like (I won't be nominating Ashwell Mummers as the best band though). ;-) Ian |
26 Jan 07 - 07:48 AM (#1948521) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: My guru always said Hands up, I confess, I was there! But I did start sobering up around tea-time, honest.... The Song & Ale difference seems to be as far as I can see is that they're held mainly in one room with all involved. Usually plenty of good beer around somewhere as I recall - I just love them! In addition to Kitty's list there are also Forest Folk & Travelling Folk and I wouldn't miss a single one of them! Thanks for starting this up again IanC, will put my thinking cap on & send in some nominations, especially for the Horizontal Award *grin* |

26 Jan 07 - 07:12 PM (#1949203) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Bridge Both best musician and horizontal - (you have to catch him just right to get the best of both worlds) - Jeff Cole formerly Andy Martin, formerly Andy George. - He's amateur, totally amazing clawhammer guitar player (mostly blues and country) and singer; and I've seen him drink a bottle of Southern Comfort for breakfast (not recently). Also both musician and horizontal (professional) - Jon Loomes (seen drinking PINTS of double vision, the killer Kenny Cramp cider (labelled 9% 'cos that's all Kenny was allowed to label it at, usually about 12 to 15%) at Ely two years ago). |

27 Jan 07 - 07:19 AM (#1949482) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Hi Just to remind you that these are ALTERNATIVE awards so that it would be best to avoid nominating any of "the usual suspects". There are actually THOUSANDS of Folk Singers out there (still) ... they're just not getting paid for it and they mostly sing in sessions, singarounds, their local pub. I think the cross-dressing etc. is mainly covered under Folk Drama. ;-) Ian PS The Horizontal Award's getting quite a few nominations but it's worth remembering that we do let these people know they've won. For the sake of my embarrassment, perhaps you could check with them that they'd be happy to receive the award??? |
27 Jan 07 - 07:24 AM (#1949489) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC BTW ... any chance of getting this in front of the BBC do you think? We could take over the official event!!!!! |
27 Jan 07 - 07:59 AM (#1949512) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: bubblyrat There ought to be an award for Eccentricity !! I mean, there are some pretty strange characters out there. There"s the guy with the Cajun box who just plays two push-pull chords & sings something unintelligable----I saw him enter the melodeon competition at Sidmouth 3 or 4 years ago,it was incredibly funny and VERY sad both at the same time .Then there"s the bloke who turns up at sessions with the musical saw---I mean,if he"s not eccentric, then who is ??Collectively," Alhambra " are from another dimension( I think they are WONDERFUL !! )----Anybody who thinks that Pete Lister is "normal" is in line for an award themselves ! Of course,Alhambra are well -known, but not the others, maybe.? One of the regulars at the Seven Stars near Maidenhead is ,in my opinion ,quite potty, and as for the blind guy with the Keyboard who does parodies of popular songs in the Bedford Hotel---Well,he is amazingly, hilariously,BONKERS !!And what about that group from Portsmouth ,"APICELLA " (HaHa )who were at at Miskin 3 years ago ?? TOTALLY,WONDERFULLY, Strange !!! Does anybody else know of any other candidates ??? |

Chas Well, I wouldn't want to argue with you on that point, Chas, although my understanding is that (apart from your particular case), either Chas' or Chas's is correct. And if you are being pedantic, the least you could do is spell "Mornington Crescent" correctly ;-) |

04 Feb 07 - 05:47 AM (#1957266) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats I would like to suggest a Special Award for the Singers and Musicians at the Wellie in Boscastle. This would have been more appropriate last year but we didn't have an awards so lets go for it this year. After the flood in 2004 when Boscastle was devastated and the ground floor of the Wellie totally washed away, they decided that nothing was going to stop them singing there on a Wednesday night. Nothing did. Every week, without exception, they gathered at the Wellie amongst the rubble and mud, by the fires made from the pieces of wood from the flood, inside or out regardless of the weather ~ and sometimes that was horrendous rain and hail, or bitterly cold ~ and sang. Perhaps only for half an hour but they sang, making sure that the sessions would continue. The Wellie is fully open now and has been for about a year [hence last years award] and Boscastle is slowly recovering. The sessions never stopped. I do think that they deserve a mention for fortitude. |
04 Feb 07 - 05:57 AM (#1957270) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Ruth Archer Well, clearly I think Loughborough is the best new festival, though others are free to disagree! Yours in comeradely competitiveness, Ruthie :-D |
04 Feb 07 - 04:15 PM (#1957698) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Andy Jackson Hey Cats, I'm with you on that one.. There was a programme last night on the big eye in the corner about freak weather and of course it had a good bit about Boscastle. They interviewed a young resident female. In the background was a left handed acoustic guitar or two and Im sure a melodeon on the floor. I reckoned she was a folkie and later on they used a bit of her singing. Is she part of that intrepid bunch. Incidentally Jo Vosp. gave Jillie and I the tune Boscastle Breakdown, which we just love playing on our English connies. If I can play and cry at he same time we would love to play it in Boscastle for the regulars. Andy |

I've seen her do it 4 or 5 times now, in places as diverse as Sidmouth Festival to the room where Joan's body was kept in the witchcraft museum for all those years, to a small local history group, and she just is magic. At the end of the performance she leaves everyone feeling peaceful but the emotional roller coaster she takes you on is something else. Absolutely stunning. Jon |

14 Mar 07 - 08:37 AM (#1996265) Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Scrump I didn't say I disagreed with the nominations, but I was just wondering what the criteria were for an artist to be "non-commercial". If it means they don't get paid, then that would eliminate quite a few of the nominations for that category, including KR & SL, to my knowledge. |
