Just confirmed!

The Seventh Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash Round Robin Songest will take place on Sunday, July 8, 2007, starting at 7:00 PM. The venue will be the Bowery Poetry Club, located at 308 Bowery in New York City. That's right across the street from where CB's 313 Gallery and CBGB/Omfug used to be.

I will post additional information, including the amount of the cover charge and names of the performers, at a later time. Meanwhile, mark your calendars. This promises to be one really wonderful show.

I'm so happy Mimi LaValley will be joining us this year. I met her at People's Music Network this year and she blew me away. Young, talented, nice, and she knew a Guthrie song that none of us had heard before.

Have you been Rambling Around and hitting a lot of Hard Traveling lately? Have you been Going Down the Road Feeling Bad? Has your Curly Headed Baby in those Oklahoma Hills told you So Long, It's Been Good to Know You? You ask Why, Oh Why? And all we can say is you should be Taking It Easy, Taking It Slow. I am looking forward to the show this year. And I want to thank the folks at The Bowery Poetry Club for providing the space. For the first six years we had the Woody Bash at CBGBs 313 Gallery across the street, but, alas, CBs is no more. Everything was nice and cozy there, but then life happened. Some good old New York City real estate reality.

I want to take a moment to remember and thank the folks at CBGBs for all they gave us over the years. Somehow I don't think they are finished yet.

So, I'll see you all on the Bowery, at the Poetry Club on the 8th of July. A lot of excitement goes along with a show at a new space. And we have such good talent to get it started. I hope The Bowery Poetry Club will be pleased and ask us back again next year.

One of the songs I plan to do (at this point, subject to change) is Slipknot-Hangknot, a Woody song about capital punishment. The last time I played it was at the Dissident Folk Festival last October in Beacon, NY. I was joined on stage by a thin fellow with a banjo whose name is Pete. If you have a photo of that I would like to see it.

peace joy love music Italian food and regime change,

Yes, it's sad to leave the history and ambience of CB's. It's fortunate that this nearby venue has welcomed us. As posted by guest, Anne, Mimi Lavalley, new to this Guthrie gig has an outstanding and unusual song to present. There are many other tunes, both familiar and little known that will comprise this fun-filled evening. I'm confident both the performers and the audience will have lots of enthusiasm as they sing and sing along. Hope you all can make it and bring your friends!
peace, joy, love, music, home cookin' and regime change!

Grretings:

Click here for photo taken at the Second Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash, held at CB's 313 Gallery in New York City on July 14, 2002. That was the only time we actually had the event on Woody's birthday. Otherwise, we have always held it on the Sunday right before his birthday. (Woody was born in Okemah, Oklahoma, on July 14, 1912.)

See how many people, if any, you can recognize.

Hi Mudcatters and guest Alan...I don't know about any prizes other than a terrific concert and a great night out. If you recognized some of the musicians in photo, hopefully you're close enough to NYC to see them and others this summer. Time's getting close. We're celebrating Woody's birthday on Sunday, July 8th at 7 PM at the Bowery Poetry Club. (details above)

Although Woody would be 95 years old had he lived to 2007, he left his mark during the all too limited productive years given him.
ARE THERE ANY GUTHRIE FANS OUT THERE????? Love to hear from you. Leave a message on this thread.

This is just a quick THANK YOU! to everyone who came to the Seventh Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash last night. The house was packed and rocking. The shutdown of CBGB/Omfug and CB's 313 Gallery last year left us like the boll weevil, "just a looking for a home." But the Bowery Poetry Club took us in and gave us shelter. For that we shall be forever grateful.

The Eighth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash is tentatively set for Sunday, July 13, 2008.

Be there!

Wow, folks, what a great show! I hope you were there to see it. We even got a CD out of it destined to become one of those unpublicized underground classics.

Although it will be hard to beat, it's onward to next year's show and July 13, 2008!

What a fantastic night! The Guthrie concert rocked. People really were dancing in the aisles, singing along, clapping along. Good energy all around. Everyone in this rather large group made a significant contribution.
Special thanks to Hillel Arnold for his wonderful harmonies!

If you missed this one, you have something to look forward to next year, although I think this was our best ever. We'll have to try to top it in 2008.
