security loopholes

some criminal will find them.

But give it about 6 years and you will find virtually no new gizmo will run on XP (or more specifically the s/w for it). I am finding this on Win98SE (SP2). I keep a machine running on Win98 because I have software that runs on it. And has problems installing on XP (long file names). AND I want to see what my website looks like to legacy surfers.

aren't KVM switches (& Laplink) wonderful)?

eg Morph Studio works - all versions of Morphman seem to be exasperatingly crap - until I got a ripped-off version which I don't use yet. Morph Studio was a Ulead freebie and I would willingly pay for the upgrade but there isn't one - unless it morphed into Morphman and collapsed.

I use linux. The wife's new machine is going to run linux, with the old one stuck in the corner for certain win98se programs she needs, and no internet connection.

This fuss reminds me of a conversation I had about 5 years ago. I was introduced to one of the world's top 'digital illustrators'. She used PhotoShop 3.3 for her work. She said Adobe was anxious to give her free copies of any software they had but that 3.3 did exactly what she wanted. If it weren't for security and updates, I think most would stick with 98 or 2000. Until they found out about linux.

Which VISTA ?
ULTIMATE - recommended for digital entertainment and business. (c. Can $300)
BUSINESS - (c. C$250)
HOME PREMIUM - sold with better computors (e. g. Compaq with processor 820 or Dell 'Mainstream' Dimension desktop- see note*) (c. C$180 separate)
HOME BASIC - sold with cheaper computers (e. g. Compaq with processor 630 or dell 'basic' desktop) (c. C$130 separate)

Note*- Dell's top desktop ('hard core gamer' ability), still comes with XP Media Center.

Which Office 2007 ?
Office Ultimate (c. $700 Can.)
Professional (c. C$440)
Small Business (c. C$380)
Standard (c. C$320)
Home and Student (c. C$180)

Can't say I'm excited about Windows Vista, but it does seem like a logical advance. My XP machine is four years old, and it's getting sluggish and it's about time for me to get a new computer. I'll probably break down and get one in the next few weeks.

And then I suppose my new computer will get sluggish in a year or two. Most of what I do on my computer is Mudcat and word processing and burning CD's - same thing that I did very well with this computer when it was new, except that it wasn't sluggish then. I've scanned for viruses and adware and spyware and whatnot, and don't find anything.
Damn.

I think I'll get a high-def TV tuner with my new computer, so I can do something new with it.

"Excited" is not an adjective I use to describe my relationship with anything having to do with computers. I'm pleased that the timing of Vista's release coincides with my rapidly impending need for a new computer so I won't have to upgrade midstream. I'm not particularly pleased that there'll doubtlessly be new stuff to have to learn in order to use it. I used to get paid to learn computer crap, but since nobody pays me anymore I try to stick with learning what's necessary and no more.

From what I've seen of it, it doesn't look like like it will let me accomplish any more with my computer than I can now so I'm not excited about it. Just looks like MS is trying to corner the market on more things 3rd party stuff does now. But then, that's always been Microsoft's aim. I foresee more court cases and more control over how I use my computer. It's likely even more wizarded-out than XP. I spent most of my learning curve there in trying to get around that stuff.

If I ever meet Bill Gates in person, first I'll thank him, then I'll punch him on the nose.

Yes, Bill, I've run "defrag," and that's not the problem. I need more RAM and more hard drive space, and it probably wouldn't hurt to have more processing power. I usually figure on keeping a computer three years, and I then find buying a new one is cheaper than upgrading the old one. I delayed a year to wait for Windows Vista to come out. Some people think the new operating system will stimulate computer sales - it made me delay buying for a year.

Well said, GUEST. I also get tired of Microsoft using us, who pay for their products, to test them. I've been a software developer for most of my career, and if I ever put out products as unreliable as Microsofts, you can be sure my customers wouldn't let me get away with it. But for some reason, if Windows crashes or freezes, we all just accept it as normal for Microsoft products.

If they were any good, Microsoft would make each new release leaner, faster and more reliable - instead what we get is products that take up a lot more storage space, require more powerful processors, and are riddled with bugs. So if we want to use the latest products we have to upgrade our hardware first.

It's high time there was a proper international Microsoft User Group with teeth, that could put pressure on the company to start producing software that suits us instead of their shareholders (who are the only people to benefit from any upgrades.

Some people need to be able to gloat that they have the latest equipment and software. ooooh look what I have.

Most don't need it.

Occasioanlly and once in a blue moon software developers do something wonderful and if you need whatever they develop its worth having.

Most people don't use more than 10% of the sofware capability.

The vast majority of people only need a simple wordprocessor, e-mail and the internet.

What in my opinion has changed dramatically is music, photo's and the abilty to send them and websites.

Thats where the rub comes in. As much disk space, memory and processing power are needed for that. So they bring out faster and more powerful machines to handle it. So you finish up buying a new machine.

And so the cycle goes on.

Exactly--the "use it to work with" vs "learn to work on(or indeed 'with') it" analogy is spot on. I am not interested in having to understand how my computer works; I just need it *to* work! I love my Mac because I turn it on and it that's exactly what happens. After years of dealing with 6 million components, wireless cards (why????), external hard drives, viruses and the ever-changing labyrinthine wastes of Microsoftian arcana, it's such a relief to have this tiny little thing that does everything I want and more, while requiring nothing from me except my (admittedly fulsome!) praise.

I work in an academic environment, and I see firsthand the learning curve issues, not to mention the technophobe syndrome. The teachers I am in contact with FIRST have to master their content area, and now, given the new reality, they have to also master the whole world of computers. Under the circumstances, I think they would be better off with something that just plain works without your having to have a separate degree in HOW it works to get work done. In other words, I think teachers, and most people, for that matter would be better off with MACs.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, this is just another opportunity to further enrich Bill Gates, and along the way make it harder to pirate his products. This, BTW, will also make for many more headaches for regular users who will be ensnared in his web of new "features" that allow him to do this. It is time for some serious anti-trust action. This is as important to most of us as water and electricity, and should be regulated accordingly for the good of the vast majority of the citizenry.

With Windows, occasionally a problem occurs that means I suddenly find I need to know how to edit the feckin' registry in such a way as to not lose all my data from the system. That's what I hate about Windows.

I regard ny PC as a tool to do things I want - no more, no less. I don't want to have to learn how the feckin' thing works internally.

I come from a long line of writers, who did not mostly share my appetite for science and technology. My parents wrote up the world using typewriters, or #2 pencils on yellow foolscap pads. Neither one of them could have explained the leverage of the keys, the linkage of the carriage, the origins of graphite or the process for forming a pencil lead. But they were excellent writers.

My grandfather -- the one I knew -- was an engineer and he wrote his reports by fountain pen. He was a mining engineer and knew all about stopes and vents, but he could not have begun to explain the metalurgy of nibs. But he was a good mining engineer.

Stephen King, one of the most prolific and best-selling authors of all time, disappears inside the page when he writes. He uses a word processor. But he (I guess) knows about as much about registers and DRAM and thermal runaway as my grandfather knew about cell phones.

There's nothing wrong with my sense of adventure!! :D But I like to choose my battles, and fighting with my operating system grew old way back in the days of CP/M.

A good operating system is one which allows you to do what YOU want to do.
The Commodore Amiga was BRILLIANT for that and in various things such as image manipulation could still knock spots off Microsoft despite being 20 years "out of date".

Microsoft is crap mainly because it constantly prevents you doing what YOU want to do. It will only let you do what IT says you want to do. It is based on the old "road directions" story where - You can't get there from here...

On a PC I use Corel for word processing because Word wil not allow me to format text as I wish or put it in a box where I want or other similar annoyances. It is all very well talking about Learning Curves, but that should be something which happens because you discover improved ways to get the same job done, NOT something which prevents you doing stuff.

Talking about Microsoft Windows generally, I find that as a long-time user (since Windows 3.1), I find that I do things a certain way tha suits me, and I find it annoying when MS in their wisdom seem to change things for the sake of it, which means I have to learn new ways to do things, when I was happy to do things the way I used to do them and would prefer them to leave well alone. It makes me harbour violent feelings towards Bill Gates (although I'm sure he's a thoroughly nice guy really :-)) - a sort of Windows Rage.

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Security Watch: Speak of the Devil—Vista Voice-Attacks

First publicized by George Ou, a new type of remote attack was the talk of the security industry last week.

Windows Vista comes with speech recognition software which can perform system commands. Crucially, this feature is not turned on by default, but when it is, Ou shows that it is possible to invoke the feature by playing a sound file.

If the sound file contains spoken commands for the system, and if the speech recognition is turned on, and if the speakers and microphone are of high enough quality, the audio file can cause the system to execute commands. Ou then proposed that the file take the expeditious route of redirecting the Web browser to a simple, pre-determined address that can download a file, downloading it and executing it.

As a matter of hacking technique, this attack is more clever than practical. ... ... ... ... (somebody's opinion?)

What I don't understand is why people have so many problems with Windows. I am an obsessive computer user and I have little difficulty (except with Windows ME which was garbage). In fact, only a little messing around will allow one to figure out most of the problems with a machine. I like the car analogy. Computers need servicing every once in a while just like a car, and that's the way it is.
Now maybe I'm blessed with computers... but take heart, printers hate me.
Geoff- Corel WordPerfect is a GREAT program. So much more intuitive than Word and has very neat advanced functions you're into that. I use it for damn near everything.

Yes, it seems Microsoft keeps adding new features that they think we can't do without. What most of us want is what we want from a car - easy to use, reliable and efficient. Windows gets less of these things with each release.

MS has 1 million man years invested in XP.
What annoys me is that it's MY Million Years not theirs....

A car designed by microsoft.
It's got the standard 4 wheels, plus an extra one pointing in a completely different direction so you can drive off the road at speed.
It has brakes which operate when you turn on the cigarette lighter because Bill thinks it would be a good idea for you to go slower when lighting up.
It has a sun roof underneath the car so that when it flips over you can get a good tan.

Any other ideas for helpful features?

Quack!

When you want to change gear, it sends up an error message asking if you REALLY WANT TO and the steering locks up solid until you click on an answer box.
Quack!
