Some kind person put me onto Paddyrasta sometime ago. They sem to be having trouble with their website and I have just found them on Myspace.

"About Paddyrasta
Paddyrasta play a fresh, original blend of reggae and traditional Celtic melodies inter-weaved with heartfelt, socially concious lyrics. The band appeared live on BBC Celtic Connections in February performing 3 songs from their debut album Listen To Your Heart .. "

Anybody seen them? They sound brilliant.

I first heard a track of theirs from one of the free CDs I got after ordering a year's supply of the excellent Rock'n'Reel magazine. After listening to the track I had to get a copy of the CD. Great stuff. A mixture of reggae and traditonal Irish Music. [I refuse to use the term Celtic, which is new agey and meaningless twaddle.] Socially aware lyrics that aren't a pain in the arse. Not since the Pogues married punk with the Dubliners have I heard anything quite so interesting; although, to be fair, they don't quite reach that standard. Fully recommended. Get it on Amazon. It is not that expensive.

I have to say that I know nothing about them whatsoever.

The Myspace site seems ok some tracks to listen to and some to download but their own website flickers about, is hard to read and the links don't work.

Nuf said, the music is brilliant!

Paddyrasta are GREAT!

I found them through Myspace as well.....

We need loads more bands like this, all different cultures mixing it up and making it sound wonderful. Superb...and they write brilliant lyrics too...they really hit home with some of their songs.

The Smerkin Merkins are 'a bit good' too! :0)

Thanks Lizzie loved Smerkinmerkins as well. I have a couple of middle period Edward II and have since really enjoyed them and The Afro Celts.

What I think Paddyrasta and Smerkinmerkins retain is a sense that this is related to old tunes and could be easily heard, played and enjoyed in pubs and folk clubs anywhere. They also do what Edward II or E2R and the Afro Celts do which is to treat the roots they draw on with respect along with a good chunk of creativity.
