BS: Grumpy ol' folkies

01 Feb 07 - 06:56 PM (#1955085)
Subject: BS: Grumpy ol' folkies
From: Gizmo

Since I joined mudcat, many things make me smile, but ever more so , I find things below the line are making me more grumpy than my usual ray of sunshine persona.

In particular things which make me go grump(y)in the night are

1 Any mention of Tony B-liar and the mess he has done to this country
2 Adults with absolutely no common sense whatsoever
3 Posters with unnecessary insults

So what sets you lot off on a rant.

>We'll rant and we'll rave like true folk mudcatters<

Grumpy people really drive me mad... It never used to be like that in the good old days.

And people who pretend not to be grumpy are just as bad.

How about the young'uns?
It's all very well being OLD and grumpy, you spend your life working your butt off to get this wealth of experience. You try to pass nuggets of this condensed wisdom to the "less experienced" members only to be called an old fart... or worse!! Where is the gratitude eh? Do these young whippersnappers realize how hard we had it? Do they care? Will they be contributing to MY pension when I retire after a lifetime of hard graft? I've paid my dues ... I've earned the right to BE grumpy ..... it's taken a lifetime to achieve this level of grumpiness, why should I waste it now?
OH O.K. THEN!!!

For North American they'd have to be before about 30,000 BCE.

But it's okay. I'm the little ray of sunshine here on Mudcat. I brighten EVERYONE'S day! Oh, it's so NICE to be nice! Aren't you SOOOOOOOOO glad to be alive? Remember, the clouds will roll away and the sun will shine brightly again! There is no night so dark that eventually the sunshine will not come! Why, even in the darkest night are the stars twinkling overhead! Everything and everyone is okay! Really! So pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and stroll down the sunny side of the street with me!

Three glasses of beer and a glass of white wine at the publications reception at the SF Museum and Hall of Fame. And that was it for the whole ALA Midwinter meeting. (Well, I mean I did have some coffee and soft drinks and water too. I stayed hydrated.)

And they were like gentle rays of sunlight caressing the green hills and valleys of Washington State, coaxing the grains and grapes to their fullest potential.

I'm with Gizmo on the 'adults with no common sense' thing.

Colleague in my office ranted for 3 hours yesterday over a 'no headphones in the office' rule newly instigated by our (female) manager. He actually used the phrase "I'm a 25 year old man, I don't have to be told what to do by that woman"... to which the reply was 'you're 25, so why are you acting like a 3 year old?'

Stupid thing is, if he'd not ranted and raved as he did, it would have all been forgotten by next week.

I'm unbearably perky in the morning... I MAKE people grumpy!

Shop assistants who seem to have forgotten that the customer is the reason they have a job.

I was in a store a few weeks back, coming out of a side aisle to the main drag when this idiot with a large trolley yells "wait!' and pushes his trolley smack dab across the entrance to the aisle. He then stops it there and proceeds to load a pile of stuff on it. I had to turn around and fight my way through the people down that aisle to get out and down the next aisle. Not so much of a hardship, maybe, but indicative of the attitude of many in the industry these days.

The Wolf Man comes home one day from a long day at the office.
"How was work, dear?" his wife asks.

"Listen! I don't want to talk about work!" he shouts.
"Okay. Would you like to sit down and eat a nice home cooked meal?" she asks nicely.

"Listen!" he shouts again. "I'm not hungry! I don't wanna eat! All right! Is that all right with you? Can I come home from work and just do my own thing without you forcing food down my throat? Huh?"
At this moment, the wolf man started growling, and throwing things around the apartment in a mad rage.

Looking out the window, his wife sees a full moon and says to herself, "Well, I guess it's that time of the month."

So stay above the line, then. Below the line, I have encountered a few with less than their share of common sense, or who were seriously insulting. I ignore them, and respond to posts by "real" people. Or if I engage them, I prepare to accept the consequences beforehand. You can do the same. Or stay above the line. Or go below the line and enjoy your grumpiness. Sometimes a good grump is just what the doctor ordered.

Oh, I forgot to answer the question. Um, what sets me off...

session players who can't keep a beat;
people who drive while talking on cell phones forcing ME to do all the accident avoidance;
president Shrub, except when he is asleep and can do no harm;
bad people taking advantage of good people (see above);
hypocrisy;
disingenuousness;
bad coffee;
"mandatory" gratuities when the REAL problem is that wait-staff are not paid a decent wage in the first place.

And that is just before I get out of bed. Yeah, I am grumpy, too. But I have to be really provoked before I will insult anyone. Once you do, the "discussion" if that is indeed what was transpiring becomes a battle, and all parties lose.

Right on.

And something else that makes me grumpy is when there's a mandatory service charge in a restaurant, and when you pay by credit card, there's a space for you to put in a gratuity as well, the cheeky b*gg*rs.

eanjay - I agree, aw well as the most patronising of all comments

"calm down" worse than this is when it is suffixed with ...dear.

Saulgoldie - I am enjoying being grumpy. I am getting practice in early before I am old enough to be officially grumpy.

I'm young, grumpy and incredibly cynical.

I'm also, old (according to my children), bubbly and a laugh. I like people happy.

president Shrub, except when he is asleep and can do no harm;

His wetting the bed every night doesn't make Laura meet the morn with a smile upon her lips.

But she wakes up! And if you are reading this you have too! The sun arose, even though right now it's behind some clouds which are bringing needed moisture to the earth! Soon Spring will be here and Proserpine will scatter flowers and grasses over the hills and valleys! Look around you and you will find joy, joy, joy! Remember: every day above ground is a good one!

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow,
There's a bright golden haze on the meadow,
The corn is as high as an elephant's eye,
An' it looks like its climbin' clear up to the sky.

Chorus:
Oh what a beautiful morning,
Oh what a beautiful day,
I've got a wonderful feeling,
Everything's going my way.

Repeat chorus

All the cattle are standing like statues,
All the cattle are standing like statues,
They don't turn their heads as they see me ride by.
But a little brown mav'rick is winking her eye.

Repeat chorus

All the sounds of the earth are like music,
All the sounds of the earth are like music,
The breeze is so busy it don't miss a tree,
And an ol' Weepin' Willer is laughin' at me.

Repeat chorus

Grumpy is like salt, or garlic maybe. You wouldn't want it as a meal on its own, but it can make a meal a lot tastier.

I distinguish between grumpy and grouchy. You can enjoy being grumpy, and, for that matter, someone else being grumpy, but grouchy is a lot harder to live with, in yourself or in others.

Note that for TV purposes women count as "old" in their mid forties. And over the age of sixty or so they tend to cease to exist. At least with the men they had to be nearly sixty to count, and go on for ever. (In both senses.)

True grumpiness comes out of frustrated optimism. You see how things ought to be - how they used to be maybe, or how they could be - and you make known your feelings.

The one I read the other day was

If you're happy and you know it

Rattle your chains.

    I may have got past grumpiness to

There someone goes again

Seen it before

And she's sooooo serious about it.

Who do they think they're kidding?

(smile)

(laugh helplessly)

(shrug)

       and the line I use regularly at work when someone paid a hell-of-a-lot more than me is "££$$%^&*ing it up

    (Heavy emphasis on 'sure')
    "I'm sure they know what they're doing."

   Gets me thru this part of my life anyway.
