Lyr Add: Cemetery Rose

On the plains of south Texas in the gray raining cold
In a lonesome old graveyard blooms one single rose
It's a rose garnet red that she planted in grief
And it blooms just one day - has not one single leaf

It's branches are brown, its steel thorns they are grey
And she planted that rose on her own wedding day
At the altar they told her your lover is dead
Now fifty years later she still has not wed

(chorus)
It's a cemetery rose blooming in the cold
It's a cemetery rose watching her grow old
It's a cemetary rose planted at his feet
It's a cemetery rose watered when she weeps

She holds fast to a branch to hold his hand in hers
and for one tragic moment the two worlds they merge
as the pain of the thorns that are piercing her flesh
weds the pain of the sorrow that heaves in her chest

(Chorus)

They don't know where she comes from
They don't know where she goes
Behind her back they whisper there goes cemetery rose
They call her cemetery rose

Well, I'm just jumping in here as a newbie - been playing for about 30 years, folk roots. played with a bunch of old street musicians and learned abit - self taught mostly. The above is my own composition.

Thanks for taking a look. Oddly, one of my musical goals has been to write a "traditional" song. Well, maybe not so "oddly" here in this forum - but in the general world of wannabe millionaire musicians. I'd just like one of my songs to be good enough that people like it and play it.

I hope that's happening with Cemetery Rose - its been covered once by a guy in California doing his own CD which ws pretty flattering and i begged him not to list me in credits and make it "trad" or anaon but he insisted.

I just found the shameless self promotion thread which i guess is where this should be, I'm sure someone will slap me around with a large mudcat (or trout) if I accidentally break a rule or two.

website at myspace below has this song recorded as well as 3 other originals - Broken Rainbows is my other favorite.

You certainly have a good feel for this kind of old time song.

thank you. It's my inner hillbilly lol or as I say sometimes - there's a little hillbilly in all of us!

I actually saw this rose for real in a cemetery here, it was new years day and it was on the plains of south texas where I live. strangest thing, that rose, not a leaf on the bush and cold as hell midwinter. I have a pic i need to capture off a videocassette tape when i get to the album art.
