Origins: The Sick Note Song

I'm just curious, what was the name of the original tune that Paddy's Not at Work Today (The Sick Note Song) used? I found it in the database, but the music had different lyrics than the song. Anyone know the name of it?

Help would be much appreciated.

Quite often this sort of information can be found in older threads by searching through them using Lyric and Knowledge Search

Aaarrgh! Not this again. :-)

The questtion is: was the tune around before "The Garden Where The Praties Grow" used it? It wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Of what sort of timeline is Scrump talking?
I was singing "The Garden Where The Praties Grow" at school, more than 50 years ago.

"The Sick Note" has so many variations in song & story that absolute answers are not easy. It has become one of those legends that, like the hydra, has many heads.

Just enjoy it...don't try to chase it.

I first heard it as a monologue on an open university tape in the late sixties

G'day Bill the sound,

That monologue was by the late Gerard Hoffnung ... an address to the Oxford Union (~ ?) ... and I don't think it was original to Hoffnung - who had adapted a music hall piece.
