I am seeking the lyrics for Don Lange's 'Dyin' River'.   Does anyone have them?

I think--if it's the song from Freeman and Lange--that the song title is "The Dying River".

Peace, yes I believe it is the same song. The Freeman and Lange LP on Flying Fish, which I do not have, has it as 'The Dying River'.   I have it on an album, kindly given to me by Art Thieme, of Don Lange & The Iowa City Sheiks live at the University of Wisconsin in 1976 - the track listing there gives it as 'Dyin' River'. I want to include the song in a presentation at a folk festival in June, but am having difficulty in deciphering some of the lyrics.

Stewie, Hi there!! I thought it was on one of those things of Don's I sent your way. He just put out a new CD recently. The things I've sent you by Don were concerts he did in Manitowoc, Wisconsin a few decades back.. They were not issued commercially. I talked to Don fairly recently and he's doing well there in Oregon---. It's great to see him back to making some music again, but his main thing is making wine these days. I'll give that song a listen and see if I can decipher what you cannot.

All the best to you and Cathy and all the good folks in Darwin N.T.

Art (still here in Peru)

Thanks, Peace. I will email if all else fails.

Art, thanks. It is mainly the first few lines and also a word in the chorus: 'See the old man by the rattlin' [sluice??]. I see on the Net that Don's new CD is available from CDBaby - I will order a copy.

Best wishes to you and Carol, Stewie.

The Dyin' River:

Black dirt farms in the garden of Iowa
covered the booty of anthracite coal
power was short, money was talkin'
they laid back her flesh and they tore up her soul.

Walk on down to the Dyin' River
see the old man by the rattling slough
ask him how he made it through the Winter
if you're lucky he might tell you

Back in the hills of old West Virginia
the people are poor, they live off the land
but livin' is one thing, starvin's another
'cause nothing will grow on bedrock and sand.

Walk on down to the dyin' river
see the old man by the rsttling slough
ask his name 'cause he might be your brother
he might be your father, he might be you

Motors are hummin', a can opener opens
a can that is empty, a bottle that's cold
under a streetlamp a tycoon is beggin'
for one ear of corn you can have all his gold.

Thanks so much for the lyrics! I've loved this song & album for over 30 years. Had to buy the CD from Japan!

Thanks so much! Peace.
