Google

SEA SHANTIES RELATED TO NELSON (Pdf)

It's there as a PDF file. I do not know how to cut and paste from those files.

The song was included in the performance the Keelers put together for the bicentary of the Battle of Trafalgar in October 2005, and which was rehearsed by Peter Wood as a Whitby festival workshop in August 2005.

I'll forward this thread to Johnny Collins.

The lyrics are on Page 2 of the SEA SHANTIES RELATED TO NELSON site. I really wish I knew how to copy/paste from PDF files.

One source for this song evidently is John Ashton's REAL SAILORS SONGS, © 1891, which generally can be purchased at used book websites in a reprinted version. It's a good investment.

Johnny Collins told me at the folk club this evening that he sings the version given in the link above.

One additional "footnote": the famous Royal Navy surgeon Dr. F. Dogbody lost his "larboard" leg at the Battle of Copenhagen, as commemorated by James Normal Hall (coauthor of Mutiny on the Bounty) in a book of the same name as the good Doctor. Of course Dr. Dogbody is also said to have regaled his friends with at least 9 other versions of how he lost his leg. I have taken the liberty of composing a ballad which while it can't do justice to the stories at least summarizes them: Click here and search for lyrics!

Ah, for a glass of old Port Royal!

Cheerily,
