Martin 000-15VS. Or one of the Chinese Guilds (DAD-30 or DAD-30R). Or one of the Chinese Epiphones (EF500 or EF500-R).

Don't thank me. Glad to be of help.

Peter.

Never heard of Variax before. But I'll echo what Midchuck said about the Martin 15's. A very nice series of guitars for the price.

If you are ever in England, the luthier Rob Armstrong makes small bodied guitars that resonate and project like blazes and play beautifully. He has no website (doesn't need to) but if you are interested I could tell you how to contact him.

What part of the USA will he be traveling to - it's a big country. We might be able to suggest a good place to shop.

Variax are actually guitar synths. All the noises of famous guitars are put on microchip.

they are solid bodied. and they don't feed back in noisy places. You can nail your audience in their seats, when you pump up the volume. and you can play open tunings with a press of a switch. You need good monitors for that last trick - cos the strings are still making the out of tune noise - you have to concentrate on the a noise from the amp rather than the guitar. They are made by Line 6, who made the POD sound effects system

I think with an acoustic guitar - there is a trade off when you reduce the size of the body even to have a cutaway. I know Rob Armstrong's work very well - he is quite as wonderful as you suggest, but even he would have to admit small ones don't really have the same sound - although they can have a very nice sound. He made two parlour sized ones for the late George Harrison before he died (obviously), and George was no schmuck.

Yamaha do some higher level APX models which are pretty good - the APX900. I have bought a couple of Faith guitars recently and they both have scrubbed up quite well. They do a couple of small bodied ones - the Mercury parlour size and the Venus electro cutaway.

anyway - best wishes and good luck with whatever it is you decide on.

I was going to offer to sell him my sweet little 1960s Epiphone Caballero, but Brazil?!

Maton BG808. Fabulous guitar! Might be pushing it a bit at US$1000 though.

Maton BG 808

Variax are only nominally acoustic. To actually get them to do their thing (namely emulating other guitars and doing funky things with tunings), they need to be plugged.

Small-body Lowdens are very nice indeed for fingerstyle. Similar sound to the big ones, but less resonant and more projecting.

Graham.

I would say the Larrivee from having played all three. But this is subjective. I don't normally like Taylors but there is a killer example of their cheap model currently going secondhand locally to me for about £300 that I'm seriously thinking about! There are many other luthier-made small bodies but much more expensive.

I think it's a case of trying what's available and buying "what speaks to you".

I have a Larrivee OM 03R, & it's a fine guitar at a modest price.

The big baby taylor is actually very well made and has an excellent sound for the price - plus a lovely neck profile. I'm not a huge fan of the normal-sized taylors but the BBT is made differently and really chucks out the sound. You'll always get a nicer more compact tone with a smaller guitar, but you do loose volume. One problem with the BBT and some other parlour-sized instruments though: The headstock is too heavy for the body, so on a strap (with the fulcrum at the upper strap button) the neck weighs on your hand, which is why I use martins for work. But the BBT is great on the knee and I write and practice on it.

Oh yes, if you happen to see an older Guild around, that should fit into your price bracket and will do very nicely for blues and fingerstyle both. They're not exactly small-body instruments, but they're not outrageously huge either. Don't know what modern Guilds are like, but I've heard a couple of very nice older ones.

In general, consider that the more curvy "classical" or "jumbo" shape is usually better for fingerstyle than the dreadnought shape. This is a massive generalisation though, so use your own judgement, and your ears of course! ;-)

Graham.

I have a 1992 reissue of the 1934 Gibson L-00 Blues King, made in Bozeman. I love her. She sounds bigger than she is. I'd recommend a Bozeman Gibson.

For $1000-1200 one could probably obtain a Michael Gurian S2M or S3M if you can find one. Excellent for finger-style blues, Travis or flat-picking. Had them both over the years. One got stolen the other I sold...stupid me.

Faith do a lovely parlour guitar (ask Maartin Allcock).
Martin do several models in 000 size which can be found at reasonable prices, play well and sound good.

Highly reccomend the Recording King range - I was going to buy a larivee till I tried one of their ROS 16 models - saved myself a small fortune!

Best one I've played recently was an all-mahogany parlour model by Patrick James Eggle, made out of an old Cuban mahogany bank counter. But at £3K it was was out of my price range, so probably not a beginner's guitar. Nice though!

I had an 00 model made for me recently by Ian Chisholm, a Ditchling (UK) luthier. And at a reasonable price.

This is it in action: Skylark

This has a cocobolo back and sides, and a Sitka spruce face.

For the past twen years, I've been playing a Nick Apollonio parlor-sized guitar, which everyone (including me) seems to love.

A Voyage Air OM-1 size guitar from Harvey Leach will do the trick. Exceptional workmanship and sound, plus the neck folds down to fit in a backpack. Can't praise it highly enough.
