I picked up the current issue in my local Newsagents this afternoon. Has the strapline "Roots,Rock,Blues & Beyond" & very much lives up to this. Current issue contains (amongst other things) informative profiles of Ewan MacColl & John Lennon,interviews with Moya Brennan,The Levellers,Katie Melua & Billy Bragg AND far & away the most comprehensive Folk album reviews I have ever encountered in any mainstream music periodical. They have a website www.rock-n-reel.co.uk I,personally,think it is a great magazine. Anybody else got experience/opinions? |

However, as you say, the contents look excellent and enticing, and only the high price of subscribing for us Irish & other non-UK European residents puts me off - it comes to £7.36 per issue with the postal charges, which may be necessary but it's beyond my magazine budget. Pity, because I would like to see more communication-exchange between the folk scenes of Britain & Ireland, and this would make a very rewarding addition - especially considering the assortment of Irish acts which are covered. It looks well worth reading and much-needed. Hopefully they'll improve the website, which seems to be only a holding page. I would like some detailed tables of contents and synopses listed online - but these will probably follow in time. Thanks for the heads-up, Alec - |

The free CDs you get with it have turned me on to lots of acts of whom I would not otherwise be aware. The only let down was the article of Shane McGowan, which concentrates mainly on the great freindship between McGowan and the writer and on The Fairytale of New York, which, in my opinion, is an okay song and not one of his best. Aprat from that, it is, as I said, very good. |

They have come back from being off the publication shelf for some time and I think that given time and support it could be a worthy alternative to the middle ground of folk and rock that they seems to be aiming for. Having said that (and I have good reason to say, as they did a great review on our new album Bittersweet) they also support the real traditional end of folk too. It's good to get such instant feedback. The mag intends to covers music we like, and as I love trad folk through to hardcore punk who knows! Where the music fuses and collides is an exciting place for me, but I'm still as likely to be thrilled by a traditional song from Peter Bellamy or Frank Harte. We have a website ready to go live very soon with loads of features, news, reviews and a host of Xtras not seen in the mag. An area as culturally far from London as it's possible to get, really. More so, surprisngly, than Dublin and Edinburgh are. So you get a kind of British Isles viewpoint from Rock'n'Reel, which I find a nice change from an English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh approach. Greetings from a fellow West Cumbrian! |

Listening with much enjoyment I may add. I love the free CD concept, you get to hear some stuff you would otherwise totally miss, and someone has gone to the effort(Mr McGhee I presume) to have a good think and make a nice selection. Haven't got all the way through, Martin Simpson track was good. The backing singer sounded like KRusby, was it her? Now relaxing to Lorelei.I think what the free CD needs is a Boat Band track. |

Thoroughly recommended in our camp! We have let our subscription slip after one year - but only as the magazine is sooooo fat (soooo much to read!) and then has a CD strapped onto it - so it is, in actual fact, too big for our wee letterbox! (which is still the same size as-was-built in the 1930s - way smaller than today's ones) This meant an awkward trip to the Post Office sorting office every time (a fair distance in our case - and VERY inconvenient hours of collection! - which NEVER tallied with our work patterns) But!!!!.... We made the decision to pick it up from local stores at our convenience instead - as pointed out above - we havn't yet failed to pick it up from our local shops (such as) Smiths/Borders.
