I'll certainly toss in my forebitts!

I think some of the other members of Roll & Go are also planning to come.

Charley Noble

Charley, I don't want to know about your forebitts, your aftbitts or any other of your bitts, but especially not the forebitts. I'll be there if I can dig out.

It will be a bit far for me to travel. I'm (hopefully) of to the UK tomorrow afternoon.

Is that "off" to the UK Jacqui & will Kendall be with or in the cellar? Have a good flight, we'll sing something for you, any requests?

Barry, who'll be there in snowshoes

Barry-

It will be good to share a snow shanty with you!

Barry, as far as I know, Kendall will be on his own recognizance while jacqui is away. Of course, that brings to mind "while the cat's away, the mice will play." Although, Kendall doesn't bear a whole lot of resemblance to a mouse...

OK, so I will be at the Press Room on Saturday, most likely.

My flight was cancelled and the earliest I can escape is Sunday afternoon. I've already told my Mouse that he will have to put off playing for a couple of days.....

Mice DO live and play in cellars up there in Maine, don't they? They do in Rodent Island, Varmint and New Hamster.

At risk of thread drift, here's an unsolved question for you experts up there....

"If a sailor is unwillingly abducted/pressed FROM Shanghai, is he said to have been "Friscoed", "Fliscoed", or what?"

Just wondering, is all.....

Severn-

If he's been abducted from Shanghai to 'Frisco, he's bound to the Barbary Coast ('Frisco's sailortown). Therefore, he's been BBQ'd!

Next?

Charley Noble

Jacqui, I'm sorry. Will Spring not arrive in the UK unless you've paid them a visit? I hope you can make the Press Room on Saturday, and that you don't forget to let your mouse out of the cellar before you leave. Otherwise, it may smell a bit when you get back.

Well, it's raining over there right now so a delay will give them a chance to get the better weather organised.

Seamus will need the company so the Mouse will be out of the cellar before I leave (anyway, I've asked him to buy me lunch at the Chinese buffet before I fly out - saves risking the airline food!)

I'm just back from Sin City from a 4 day real estate conference -- if there is a group going and I can make it once I have dug out from endless emails and other stuff, would almost certainly hitch a ride down but don't want to commit to driving in case I am just too dead beat (too tired) to go. So Mary or Jacqui, if one of you want to commit to driving let me know the time and place to leave and I will come along if I possibly can. After four days of conferencing, smiling, being 'on' all the time, exchanging business cards with people you will probably never see and listening to hideous background music, a nice clean sounding sea shanty would be a treat.

The one day my roommate (another British Deborah) and I managed to actually leave the hotel conference center, yesterday, we were walking around in t-shirts, no jackets, looking with wonder at the residents of Las Vegas walking around in - I kid you not in one case - boots and a fur coat!!!

Does anyone have any leftover Valentine's Day sea songs?

Gee, nobody's posted a synopsis -- and I've just spent too much time deleting messages from my Yahoo mailbox that I don't have time.

But -- I think it was a really good sess

Let's see, can I remember what I did" "Backside of Nantucket Point", "Plum Island National Anthem", "Knickerbocker Line", "Sandgate Girl's Lament", "Sailor's Prayer"...can't remember if I sang anything else.

Loved Gardi's song about off Monomoy!

And Charley sang a new song, too, I think.

Later,
Linn

Linn-

We've been moving stuff back into the entryway after having the floor done. Really not a whole lot of stuff. Just the washing machine, the dryer, the sideboard where we store all our office supplies, not to mention the copier that nests on top.

It was a fine session!

I did do a song I had just learned, "The Sea Dog," based on a poem (1918) by Burt Franklin Jenness (another sailor poet) which Bob Zenz adapted for singing back in 1992; the words are on a Mudcat thread titled Sea Dog. I also screwed up one of my favorite songs, "Lumber," which I should know stone cold. I was taken totally by surprise at the beginning of the 4th verse where I could not remember the first word ("But..."). Ugh! I also did "Fire Maringo," "Tasman Buster," and "The Long Road Home."

Nor and Eli also had a good time but both of them were ignored by the waitstaff for refills. Poor Nor! He finally wnet up to the bar trying to attract Hanna's attention to no avail. Then chatted with Peter, returned to the bar and was ignored again. Well. it is busy and not everyone is as efficient (or as brave) as Peter at getting attention.

Gardi's new song "Monomoy" is certainly worth listening to again.

Barry Finn was certainly in gret form!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Yep, I liked Gardi's song a lot too.

I would have posted sooner, but I slept badly and woke up with a migraine. Everything's OK now, except for having hands and feet of ice. It was an absolutely wonderful session. Top-notch.

No offence but this is clearly an "inside" thread.
First post does offer more info if you ask Tom. I can't tell from post where this session is. I wonder is NH New Hampshire? Could one put time, place and and contact info on first post, rather than assuming everyone knows what you guys are talking about?\
Unless you just want the same old crowd.

Oh and... What the hell is a shanty/forbitter session?. Once again your assumption is people know what you are talking about. Your Argot, Jargon and Taxonomy aside, are you looking for new recruits?

Is a wedding a "forebitter or worse" session? And if your not looking for recruits, is it a "forebitten" session? and if so, "forebitten-eight times shy"?

Hi, Guest Nick,

We have a monthly session at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH -- the theme is sea music which includes shanties (work songs) and forebitters and other songs relating to the ocean or lakes shipping, fishing, whaling, etcet etcet. This session is the third Saturday of the month at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, USA from 3:30-7:30.

Next month, because of when St. Patrick's Day falls, we will have the session on the SECOND Saturday of the month.

This thread starts as a general announcement. We've been doing this for the past four years -- we're into our fifth year. Every session has been announced here at Mudcat (and the threads can be searched for) and we've had Mudcatters come from as far as Hawaii and Canada as well as other parts of the US to attend the session.

Hope that answers a few of your questions.

Linn

Oh, and OF COURSE we're looking for new recruits!

In "normal" (nothing we do is normal!) circumstances we draw from three states -- New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. Always looking for new singers and new songs!

Where are you located, Nick?

Linn

How can I explain it....walk in....have a ginger ale placed in my hand and not say a word.....must be the scarf!!!! Animal magnetism....sense of dire insanity.....sure helps to keep life in the balance at all times. I don't ever question why things like this happen.....they just do...like the radio in the kitchen and the clanking of the dishes and the constant running to the bath rooms behind everyone singing. This is what makes and keeps life interesting. Good to see everyone and yes it was a great session yesterday. See you all soon. Jacqui...have a great trip home. Tami...always remember your friends. Tom and Linn...thanks again for another wonderful afternoon.

Linn-

You're forgetting Brett who dropped in from Guam!

I think anyone who walked into the Press Room while this session was going on would be captivated, transported back a hundred or so years ago where folks gathered at their favorite tavern for some brew, and to share some singing. I think the session really works at that level for those who listen. It's probably a little more intimidating to jump in and lead a song. But people who try are encouraged.

"LZ" also is the name of a Bulgarian rock band...
