Songs About Dogs

From: GUEST,Nick

Just watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show tonight and it makes me wonder about dog songs. Other than the one with the lyrics Me and You and a Dog Named Boo, and B-I-N-G-O can't think of other dog songs, but no doubt you guys can. Was there ever one written about Balto for instance?

Don't we already have a thread about dog songs? I seem to recall posting some titles, such as Spike Jones's "Our Hour (The Puppy Love Song)" and the kids' song "I Wanna Be a Dog."

A Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter named Bill Imhoff (I think he's the one) has a hilarious song called "Dog At The Wheel," and a wonderful Portland musician and songwriter named Lon Jones wrote and recorded a great one called "When Dogs Dream."

There's also:
Old Blue
Old Dog Tray
B-I-N-G-O
They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Aroun'
O Where, O Where Has My Little Dog Gone? [DER DEITCHER'S DOG]

You walking down my street now. There are a lot of traditional songs which will certainly come to mind: Here are a couple for starters:

Old Blue
They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Aroun'

And then there are a ton of songs that mention dogs:

My Dog's Bigger Than Your Dog, by Tom Paxton

And probably another ton of songs more recently written that are either about dogs, or have a dog as a central character in the story. I used to kid around that I could do a whole workshop on songs about dogs. Here are three that I've written and recorded. I'm sure other songwriters can add their own songs to the list.

Bet ya five dollars he's a good dog too

Old Blue chased a possum up a holler (hollow) limb
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
The possum growled, Blue whined at him

Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
Bye bye Blue

When old Blue died he died so hard
He shook the ground in my back yard
We lowered him down with a golden chain
And every link we called his name

Bye bye Blue You good dog you
Bye bye Blue

My old Blue he was a good old hound
You'd hear him hollering miles around
When I get to Heaven first thing I'll do
I'll grab my horn and call for Blue

Stop over. The world is my friend.
Stop over along the road without end.

Traveling around from town to town.
Sometimes I think I'll settle down.

But I know I'd hunger to be free.
Rovin' is the only life for me.

Here's the best I can do to recall the Pedigree ad that's made me cry every single time I've seen it. It was just on, again, and it ought to be a song. It's a short one, about 15 seconds, but it doesn't seem to go by fast.

All the camera shots are beautifully-shot closeups of expressive dogs' faces, one at a time, as they look up from their pens at a shelter with those intelligent, hopeful, wise eyes. Mutts, with that dignity so many of them have.

During the series of shots, the voiceover [a man speaking the dogs' thoughts]:

I know how to sit...., lie down...., and roll over.... .
I don't know what I'm doing here....
But I know that I am a Good Dog...,
And I just want to go home.

And then the Pedigree logo comes up and there's a brief reminder that with every purchase, they make a donation to support dog shelters.

That really ought to be a song.

Here's a link for Chicken In The Bread Tray {Auntie Will Your DOg Bite}

http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/master/chickeninthebread.html

I found a fragment of that song in Dorothy Scarborough's 1925 book "On The Trail Of Negro Folk Songs" . Scaborough introduces this fragment by writing "Of course every Southerner knows:
Chickens in de bread tray
Scratchin' out de dough.
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!"

-snip-

I found a more complete version of this song in Thomas W. Talley's 1922 book "Negro Folk Songs" :

"Auntie, will your dog bite"-
"No, Chile, No!"
Chicken in de bread tray'
A makin'up dough.

"Auntie will your broom hit?"-
"Yes, Child" pop!
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Flop! Flop! Flop!"

"Auntie, will yo' oven bake?"-
"Yes, Jes fry!"-
"What's dat chicken good frer?"-
"Pie! Pie! Pie!"

"Auntie, is yo' pie good?"
"Good as you could 'spec'".
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Peck! Peck! Peck!"

Chorus - A better friend no man could have
No truer heart, no keener eye,
A better friend no man could have,
As the sun sets in the western sky.

I've had her since I was a boy
Since first I came onto the farm,
Her company has brought me joy,
Her courage kept me safe from harm

She's been with me on all my walks,
By rushing stream and bracken glen,
And listened close to all my talks,
And never disagreed with them.

And as we walked by moorland stream,
We watched the wild hare running by,
Relived those walks in all our dreams,
As skylarks sang in summer skies.

But now she lies close by the hearth,
No hares to chase, no skylarks fly,
She takes that one last lonely path,
As the sunlight fades from western skies.

What about the one featuring all those dogs ?? Dido,Bendigo etc. ??

Or the Kipper Family's "Dido, Fido":

Well one morning last autumn I was walking my dogs
When the Duke of Wellington we did meet.
Well Bonzo and Rover, they slobbered him all over,
While Dido nearly knocked him off his feet.
Well there was....

CHORUS: Dido, Fido, Bonzo and Rex
Rover and Lassie and Spot
There was Butch, there was Candy
There was Patch and there was Sandy
These were the dogs what I had got.

Well don't worry sir I said, he won't hurt you
That's just his way of saying he like you a lot.
But he took my little dog, and he kicked him in the bog
And said that's my way of saying I do not.
There was....

Now the next dog being old, he was a trifle deaf
He couldn't hear a single word I said.
And so when I told him sit, he made an awful mess.
When I cleaned it up I shot the bugger dead.
That still left....

Now the next dog being daft, and not all the ticket
He made straight away for the river.
And there he did jump in, but the bugger couldn't swim
That's the last we saw of him forever.
There was....

They chased a rabbit o'er the plain, but that chased 'em back again
Which put my poor old dogs in quite a stew.
Now it's just 12 months today since I heard the squire say
"I should have them all put down, if I was you."
There was....

Here is the song that open mike is refering to. Every time I have played it, everyone goes, "Aaaaawwwww." I am frankly surprised that it hasn't received more circulation. BTW, I obviously have it transcribed, and I would LOVE to have it included in the DT database. (I'll be in my office...)

DOG
Written by Tom Dundee
As recorded by Bryan Bowers on "By Heart"

The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
When other people had a dog; "I'm gonna get me one,"
I said, "Have a little friend around the place."
So I went to the pet store down the street
And lyin' in the middle of a canine heap
Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face.

The next few weeks were certainly strange
Between the barkin' and the thinkin' up of names
Old Blue he wasn't and Spot didn't really apply
So I settled for Harry, just because
That's how he is and that's how he was
And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by.

For a time I was careful where I sat
The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat
And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad
But it's been pretty even after all
I taught him what I know about playin' ball
And he's helped me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have.

Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers
And we all sit around, take turns rubbin' his ears
And callin' him; it's been that way ever since he was a pup.
He sleeps on the bed and when I turn over,
He turns over, then I turn over,
Then he turns over, then I turn over, and we get up.

As my life keeps movin' through the different conditions
The big changes come with the slightest decisions
You're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I've found.
'Cause who ever thought I'd ever dote on a pet,
But lookin' back now, I always forget
How I filled up the time before my dog was around.

Move over little dog cause a big dog's movin in

She changed the lock on my front door
now my key, it don't fit no more
So get it on over (move it on over)
Scoot it on over (move it on over)
Move over skinny dog cause a fat dog's moving in

This dog house here is mighty small
But it's sure better than no house at all
So ease it on over (move it on over)
Drag it on over (move it on over)
Move over old dog cause a new dog's moving in

She told me not to play around
But I done let the deal go down
So pack it on over (move it on over)
Tote it on over (move it on over)
Move over nice dog cause a bad dog's moving in

She warned me once, she warned me twice
But I don't take no one's advice
So scratch it on over (move it on over)
Shake it on over (move it on over)
Move over short dog cause a tall dog's moving in

I'll crawl back to her on my knees
pretty soon i'll be scratching fleas
So slide it on over (move it on over)
Sneak it on over (move it on over)
Move over good dog cause a bad dog's moving in

Remember pup, before you start to whine
That side's yours and this side's mine
So shove it on over (move it on over)
Sweep it on over (move it on over)
Move over cold dog cause a hot dog's moving in

Don't see any songs about Lurchers, that famous Irish/Gypsy hunting dog, a favorite of poachers. Surely there must be a song to commemorate them.

G'day Charley Noble,

Back a day (or two ... by our local date!) you included in your (dubious) nautical sea song:

"The Dogger Bank" (Nothing to do with dogs)".

For what it's worth, the Dogger Bank is a spot (~) between England and Holland fished from a "dogger" - ": a two-masted bluff-bowed Dutch fishing boat, Middle English from Middle Dutch (Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary).

(But, of course, you knew that!)

Regard(les)s,

Thanks, Scrumpy. I was certain there was at least one lurcher song.

I suppose I should also mention the chorus I composed for "Dead Dog Scrumpy":

Here's to dead dog cider,
The best there is by far;
Here's to dead dog cider,
No moaning at the bar;
You can search this wide world over,
Find many a beer or ale,
But when you're tried dead dog cider
Your search will be curtailed!

THE DUEL (The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat)
(By Eugene Field)

The gingham dog and the calico cat
Side by side on the table sat;
'Twas half-past twelve, and (what do you think!)
Nor one nor t'other had slept a wink!
The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate
Appeared to know as sure as fate
There was going to be a terrible spat.
(I wasn't there; I simply state
What was told to me by the Chinese plate!)

The gingham dog went " Bow-wow-wow!"
And the calico cat replied "Me-ow!"
The air was littered, an hour or so,
With bits of gingham and calico,
While the old Dutch clock in the chimney place
Up with it hands before its face,
For it always dreaded a family row!
(Now mind: I'm only telling you
What the old Dutch clock declares is true!)

The Chinese plate looked very blue,
And wailed,"Oh dear! What shall we do!"
But the gingham dog and the calico cat
Wallowed this way and tumbled that,
Employing every tooth and claw
In the awfullest way you ever saw-
And oh! how the gingham and calico flew!
(Don't fancy I exaggerate!
I got my news from the Chinese plate!)

Next morning where the two had sat
They found no trace of dog or cat;
And some folks think unto this day
That burglars stole the pair away!
But the truth about the cat and pup
Is this: they ate each other up!
Now what do you really think of that!
(The old Dutch clock, it told me so,
And that is how I came to know.)

Anyone got a tune for this poem?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

one of my favorites is a Sesame Street song called "I'm A Hard Workin' Dog."

I'm a dog
I'm a workin' dog
I'm a hard workin' dog
Hard workin' dog

(spoken)

You know, it takes all kinds to make a world.
Some dogs are known as Russian wolfhounds.
Other dogs are known as German shepherds.
I even heard of a dog they call a French poodle.
I'm just an American cow dog.

(sung)

I'm a dog
I'm a workin' dog
I'm a hard workin' dog
Hard workin' dog

(spoken)

Now I never said I was a hog
And you can see I'm not a frog
I'm tryin' to tell ya, I'm a dog
I'm a cow dog

(sung)

I'm a dog
I'm a workin' dog
I'm a hard workin' dog
Hard workin' dog

(spoken)

Now some dogs can fetch a stick
Other dogs will shake your hand
I even heard of a dog that can roll over
All I know how to do
Is take a hundred cows and teach 'em some manners

(sung)

I'm a dog
I'm a workin' dog
I'm a hard workin' dog
Hard workin' dog

(spoken)

Now I'm not the top dog
I'm not much of a bird dog
I'm not the best watch dog
But I'm an awful good cow dog

(sung)

I'm a dog
I'm a workin' dog
I'm a hard workin' dog
Workin' like a dog-gone dog

(spoken) It's a dog's life, and I love it!

Lightfoot wrote a sweet song called An Old Friend, that was on the Warner Brothers Publishing Demos. You'll see bootleg CD-Rs of it, and if you are really nutty (like me), you'll have collected the actual record company vinyl. (We all have our weaknesses).

The song is actually very moving, one of the best on the demos.

--------------------------------------------------------------
An Old Friend, Gordon Lightfoot

Be still you good old friend, be still you faithful one
You dare not leave my sight

Be still you good old friend, be still and dream your dreams
Of days of youth and love

Be still you good old friend, remember that Christmas tree
Where our two hearts became as one

Recall the fields of hay, where you would romp and run
A small boy at your side

The years have quickly flown, a child I am no more
But I will love you always

Be still you good old friend, be still you faithful one
You dare not leave my sight

If anyone is interested, I have a song that my mother sang to me back in the l950's. I still sing it today. The dog's name is "Buddy" and is very sad. Hope you like it.

[LITTLE BUDDY from Hank Snow.]
Broken hearted and so sad,
golden curls all wet with tears,
twas a picture of sorrow to see.
standing close by the side
of his pal and only pride,
a little lad, these words he said to me.

He was such a lovely doggy,
and to me he was such fun,
but today as we played by the way.
A drunken man got mad at him
because he barked in joy,
he beat him, now he's dying here today.

Will you call the doctor please and
tell him, if he comes right now,
he may save my precious doggy,
because I prayed.
But when I lifted up his head,
his little pal was dead,
just a shiver, and he slowly passed away.

There's a tiny narrow grave,
where the willows softly play
and there on a shingle of pine,
Little Buddy, rest in Peace
God will watch you through the years,
cause I told him, in my prayers, that you were mine.

Cheers
Catherine

Subject: Lyr Add: DAD GAVE MY DOG AWAY (T. Texas Tyler)
From: Gene

DAD GAVE MY DOG AWAY
As recorded by T. Texas Tyler, 1959. [It was the B side of DECK OF CARDS]

[SPOKEN]
My dad gave me a brand-new bike, a streamlined one of blue,
With silver lines for trimming and with all the extras, too.
I looked it over but I knew it never could repay
For what my daddy did to me: he gave my dog away.

I know dogs are a lot o' work if folks don't want them there.
They have to feed and water them and house them too with care;
But it was fun for me because we'd always romp and play,
But without asking me at all, Dad gave my dog away.

I hurried home from school last night, and with the usual glee,
I sped to Bruce's little house, but he didn't rush to me,
And I asked Dad if he'd seen Bruce, but Dad he wouldn't say,
And mother told me afterwards that Dad gave my dog away.

I know a new bike cost a lot and would please many boys,
But I would gladly trade mine for small Bruce's playful noise,
And though I thanked both Mom and Dad and they thought me quite gay,
I hurried to my room to cry; Dad gave my dog away.

Dad says that boys outgrow such things as counting dogs their friends.
He says, and I'll have to learn, that all childish hurts do mend;
And so he bought the bike for me; it stands there, blue and gray,
But it's just a reminder that he gave my dog away.

When I'm grown and have a lad who'll want a dog instead
Of costly bikes and other things, I'll never turn my head.
I'll think of all the grief I knew when I came out to play,
That no small paws pounced on my knees; Dad gave my dog away.

Please, dear God, send me another dog, because Dad gave my dog away.

From: JennyO

A friend of mine, Rhymin' Simon, sings this Henry Lawson poem as a song. The first time I heard him sing it was at a session round a campfire, and as he sang it, he patted an imaginary dog. It was one of those magic moments - lovely! And in case anyone goes looking for a tune - no, it's not the Chris Kempster one. I don't know where he got the tune. Must ask him.

DOWN THE RIVER - Henry Lawson

I've done with joys an' misery,
    An' why should I repine?
There's no one knows the past but me
    An' that ol' dog o' mine.
We camp an' walk an' camp an' walk,
    An' find it fairly good;
He can do anything but talk,
    An' he wouldn't if he could.

We sits an' thinks beside the fire,
    With all the stars a-shine,
An' no one knows our thoughts but me
    An' that there dog o' mine.
We has our Johnny-cake an' "scrag,"
    An' finds 'em fairly good;
He can do anything but talk,
    An' he wouldn't if he could.

He gets a 'possum now an' then,
    I cooks it on the fire;
He has his water, me my tea—
    What more could we desire?
He gets a rabbit when he likes,
    We finds it pretty good;
He can do anything but talk,
    An' he wouldn't if he could.

I has me smoke, he has his rest,
    When sunset's gettin' dim;
An' if I do get drunk at times,
    It's all the same to him.
So long's he's got me swag to mind,
    He thinks that times is good;
He can do anything but talk,
    An' he wouldn't if he could.

He gets his tucker from the cook,
    For cook is good to him,
An' when I sobers up a bit,
    He goes an' has a swim.
He likes the rivers where I fish,
    An' all the world is good;
He can do anything but talk,
    An' he wouldn't if he could.

here's one I wrote for my old Ben. nov/03

They say it is for life
but whose life does it mean.
My old friend has left me
no more, no never to be seen.
Now some of you remember
the black shadow on the floor
the one you tripped over
as you went towards the door.

They give their love to you freely
asking very little in return
so when their time does come
it is you they look towards.
As the memories flash before you
it is you that must bare the pain
to release them, let them go
Release their soul again.

But they get so deep inside you
where that pain begins to talk
From that little bouncy puppy
to the old friend that can hardly walk
They look to you for guidance
even though they cannot walk
It is you that must thank you
when it's time for their last walk.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BLIND BOY'S DOG (Hank Snow)
From: Songster Bob

From Hank Snow, by way of U. Utah Phillips:

The Blind Boy's Dog

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam in 1943
He sailed across the sea
And died for Liberty.
Now that you are sending heroes home
I just don't understand
Why don't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

He'd sleep beneath Old Glory
Right here on Daddy's farm.
I'd be close by to keep him from all harm.
No one knows how much I miss him
And how lonesome now I am.
Why don't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam, he was so brave and smart;
We both knew from the start that we would have to part.
You wrote he died a hero, it was in the telegram,
Why don't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

It's true no more he'll lead me,
Like he did in days of yore.
He'll never be a blind boy's pal no more.
No one knows how much I miss him
And how lonesome now I am.
Why don't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

The untold point of this song is that the dogs trained to guard ammo dumps, etc., in combat zones were all destroyed, rather than attempting to retrain them, since the training was rudimentary, quick, and vicious, resulting in savage, barely-controllable dogs. That was most of the dogs, though a few who were trained as police patrol dogs, were kept, if needed. Of course, the other reason for not retraining and returning dogs to their former owners was simply financial. It was too expensive to do. The same was true of most of the horses in WWI, at least in some theaters of operation.

Bob

WyoWoman, surely you should include some songs about cats too? For ideas, check out Cindy Mangsen's CD Cat Tales. You can find information about it at her (and husband Steve Gillette's) web site at compassrosemusic.com. If you go to the store page, there is a link to song clips. Cindy's original, Rudy's Great Adventure, is a very funny song about the cat who got his head stuck in a garbage disposal and lived to bask in fame and glory (his owner's account was published in Reader's Digest). Of course, it's a long song with complicated lyrics, so I can imagine it will be a bit of work to learn it!

Guest Jim mentioned Lou and Peter Berryman's "The Dog of Time" but neglected to mention their song "Ralph to Rose", which is about Peter's dogs Rosie and Izzy. It includes clever choruses where Rose barks "Ralph! Ralph! Ralph!" sharply and Izzy barks "Ruth, Ruth, Ruth" laconically.

I saw Lou and Peter in concert last week, and they sang a brand-new dog song that has not yet been released on CD. It describes symptoms of the insecure dog. Unfortunately I don't remember the entire title; it's "Is Your Dog [insert word I forgot here]". I'm sure that if you email them, they'll tell you what it is. See www.louandpeter.com for contact info. [Does Your Dog Agonize?]

- - - - - - -

Then there's the old music-hall song "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow-Wow." The chorus includes the lyric "I have a little cat and I'm very fond of that, but I'd rather have a bow-wow-wow." Supposedly the lyrics contain a lot of sexual innuendo, but because of their intentional obfuscation (and the passage of many decades), the sexual references are not obvious to me.

Actually, it's for a fundraiser for the Bark Park (off-leash park) sponsored by the Humane Society. So the cats will have to wait for a more general fundraiser.

Had me a Dog and I called Him Blue. Wasn't anything that dog couldn't do.
Anyone know the title of this doggie song?

OLD BLUE!!! [also here]

Had a dog and his name was Blue
Had a dog and his name was Blue
Had a dog and his name was Blue
Bet-cha five dollars he's a good dog too
Here, blue, you good dog, you

Shouldered my gun and tooted my horn
Gonna find a possum in the new ground corn
Old Blue barked and I went up to see
Cornered a possum up in a tree
Here, blue, you good dog, you

Old Blue died and he died so hard
Shook th ground in my backyard
Dug his grave with a silver spade
Lowered him down with links of chains
Here, Blue, you good dog, you

From being rocked in Mama's arms (about 1925...)

I had a little doggie
Used to sit and beg
Doggie tumbled down the stairs
And broke his little leg;
Now doggie I will nurse you
And try to make you well,
And you shall have a collar and
A pretty little bell.

And when your leg is better
So you can run and play
And have a scamper in the fields
To seem them making hay-
The pretty yellow chickiens
That play upon the grass,
You must not even wag your tail
Or scare them as you pass.

I want to go to Grandmamas,
You know you said I might-
I want to go so very bad,
I want to go tonight.
She lets me wash the dishes
And look in Grandpa's watch-
I wish I had three-four pennies
to buy some butterSCOTCH! (SCOTCH is hollered, accompanied with a
good hard hug)

Not much of a song, but I used to love it- even now I smile at the pictures it gives- and the dreamy wanderings as the child's mind shifts from one thing to another. So true to life.

Not really a doggy song but it is a good one about wolves, and one with a mssage:

DANCING WITH WOLVES
(TUNE: Waltzing With Bears; words: Dale Connely)

It wasn't that we didn't treat him OK
It wasn't that he wasn't given his way
Free room and board, he had nothing to pay
But still Uncle Walter went dancing that day.

Chorus:

He went da da da da da dancing with wolves
Werey wolves, scary wolves, hairy wolves too;
There's nothing on you that a wolf wouldn't chew
If you went out dancing, dancing and prancing,
If you went out dancing, went dancing with wolves!

Now a wolf is a creature tha roams with the pack;
When cornered or hungry, they're prone to attack;
I told him, "Be careful" I begged him in fact,
But now Uncle Walter is not coming back. (CHO)

Now some people think they can waltz with a bear,
Or polka with wolves, or birds in the air;
I say it's unlikely, exceedingly rare,
To find a wild creature, that's willing to meet you
To socialize, visit, or dance anywhere. (CHO)

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

There's also the poem of "The Lone Dog" which I added to another thread but why not paste it here as well:

By Irene Rutherford Mcleod English (1891- 19??)
From Louis Untermeyer, ed. (1885–1977). Modern British Poetry. ©1920, p. 164.

Lone Dog

I'm a lean dog, a keen dog, a wild dog, and lone;
I'm a rough dog, a tough dog, hunting on my own;
I'm a bad dog, a mad dog, teasing silly sheep;
I love to sit and bay the moon, to keep fat souls from sleep.

I'll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet,
A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat,
Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate,
But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff and kick, and hate.

Not for me the other dogs, running by my side,
Some have run a short while, but none of them would bide.
O mine is still the lone trail, the hard trail, the best,
Wide wind, and wild stars, and hunger of the quest!

Notes:

Irene Rutherford McLeod, Australian born on August 21, 1891, has written three volumes of direct and often distinguished verse, the best of which may be found in Songs to Save a Soul (1915) and Before Dawn (1918). The latter volume is dedicated to A. de Sélincourt, to whom she was married in 1919 after she had moved to the UK.

Ol' Red by Blake Shelton

And the warden sang: Come on somebody; Why don't you run?
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern; Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes.

Real Life by Jeff Carson mentions a dog in the very sad first of the song.

{first of the song}
I was young, he was old
we both were the same age
Everyday playing fetch, shaking hands
he'd lick my face

And I wasn't aware
The day would come
Then he died
For the first I knew what real pain was

And I never was the same again
From that moment on
Real life began

I've scanned through the list and don't see one my Daddy Claude (maternal grandfather) always sang: "Old Mickey Bralligan Had a Bullpup", which is what he gave as the title. Mom recalls that spelling, but I seem to recall "Brannigan". I'll have to find that tape to make certain.

DADDY CLAUDE'S VERSION:
Old Mickey Bralligan had a bullpup
Of very brave and elegant stock
Seventeen hours of hard battle he fought,
'Pon my soul, that he did, by the clock.

His tail was a very neat little stub,
Bowlegged and two crooked eyes,
...............................
'Twas the Devil himself, in disguise!

CHORUS:
For bow wow wow, what a dog to be sure
For fighting he'd never give up.
There never was known such a wonderful dog
As old Mickey Bralligan's pup.

He tore the tail off Maloney's best coat,
And the bustle off Mary Ann Flynn,
....................................
......... (I think this ends with "shin".)

He grabbed the Dutch shoemaker's dog,
And shook him around like a rat;
Hc murdered Tim Finnegan's beautiful goat,
Et the tail of McMonigan's cat.

CHORUS

An Italian come round playing organ one day
With a monkey tied on with a string
And when the dog spied the monkey
Oh! He gave a most wonderful spring.

He upset the grinder, monk and all
And bursted the organ's insides.
Bejaysus he tried to swallow that monk,
Got choked on his tail and died.

CHORUS

I can add the variations, if that's of any interest. We grandchildren LOVED this song, especially because Daddy Claude sang it in an Irish brogue and acted out bits of it. I think on the recording I have that he surprised Mom Flossie's cat, Duchess, who responded with an indignant meow exactly after "cat".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The version below differs from my grandfather's version (above), which I plan to finish transcribing, having lost my earlier lyrics sheet. Most of this was from memory, and my memory isn't always trustworthy; I'll bet my Aunt Wanda would remember all of it. I know that a number of the names are lost or changed:
OL' MICKEY BRANNIGAN'S PUP
(Gus Phillips)
Ol' Mickey Brannigan had a bull pup
Bred of O'Lannigan stock,
Seventeen hours of battle he fought,
'Pon my soul, an' he did, by the clock.
cho: Bow-wow-wow-wow, what a pup, to be sure,
Fighting he'd never give up,
Never was known such a wonderful dog
As Ol' Mickey Brannigan's pup.
His tail was a neat little bit of stump,
Bowlegged and two crooked eyes,
A look at his darn ugly mug was enough:
'Twas the Devil himself, in disguisc!
He trod on the tail of Maloney's best coat,
On the bustle of Mary Ann Flynn,
Ravaging young Kitty Mulligan's leg,
Holy Mother! It was a great sin.
He grabbed up the Dutch shoemaker's dog,
Shook him around like a rat;
Hc murdered Tim Finnegan's beautiful goat,
Et the tail of McMonigan's cat.
A man came along with an organ one day,
Had a monkey tied fast by a string;
The dog, when he saw him, he yelled with delight
And made a most wonderful spring.
He jumped onto the Eye-talian's back,
Bursted the organ inside,
Tried to swallow the monkey,
But he choked on his tail and died.
Hawker, you are right. The song is called 'You can't bring that bloody dog in here', written by Brian Ross. It was written because at Sidmouth one year all dogs were banned from the Anchor. Just wanted to correct some lyrics to the song MY DOG by Tom Dundee posted early in this thread:
The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
Other people have a dog, I'm gonna get me one,
I said, 'N have a little friend around the place.
So, I went to the pet store down the street
and lyin' in the middle of a canine heap
was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face.
I handed the man 15 dollars about
and said "I'll just stick 'er in my shirt and head on out"
and reached for the one that looked like a little fox.
He said, "you hold it right there and fill out these sheets,
have her back in for shots in a couple 'o weeks
and it's our policy you take 'er outta here in this box."
Well he folded up a cardboard crate in a minute,
took my dog stuck 'er down in it,
pushed on 'er head and folded in over the top.
Well, I can hear her yet how she scratched and she cried
and she hollered some more when we got her out side
and we were almost home before she decided to stop.
The rest of it is as posted.
Don't know when Tom changed the gender because we weren't in touch over the last years of his life. Originally, the dog was female and some of the submitted lyrics were different than the ones I learned, but other than that it's all good.
Doggy, oh, biddi bam bam (klavlav, ho, bidi bam bam). A Matti Caspi song about a dog who steals a bone.
Blast! just remembered Martyn Wyndham-Read BALLAD OF THE DROVER
The faithful dog a moment
    Sits panting on the bank,
And then swims through the current
    To where his master sank.
And round and round in circles
    He fights with failing strength,
Till, borne down by the waters,
    The old dog sinks at length.
I cry like a baby everytime I hear it.
Subject: Lyr Add: AIN'T NO GOIN' BACK (Jed Marum)
From: JedMarum
My wife wanted me to put our dogs in a song. I'd been playing with the notion of amusing myself with a common sort of country song format - hopefully with a twist - so I wrote the song below. It is currently up on the Boston Road Records Myspace page, look for the title in the jukebox, upper right.
The sighthounds I mention are Whippets (we have two). They are lovely dogs. Fast, fun loving, silly, fast as hell, great hunters and faster then hell.
Ain't No Goin' Back
(c) Jed Marum 2006
Lacey turned her face to the sun it was almost risin'
Jackson hit the ground on the run and he bound away
Amarillo skyline clear against the horizon
Just another lonely start to a brand new day
Somethin' in her eye that caught me without warning
Somethin' in her arms that made me want to stay
Nothin' at this roadside stop this time of the mornin'
Nothin' but these two sight hounds my truck and me
CHO
Each and every time I leave
I loose the world behind
Each and every time I find my way
Ain't no goin' back it's true,
I know but I don't mind
Just another lonely start to a brand new day
Now and then I hear from my sister in Memphis
She gives me all the news of my ex in San Antone
I try to say hello to Mom on birthdays and Christmas
"No I can't come just now, but it won't be long."
CHO
I whistle for the dogs and Jackson jumped on the tailgate
Lacey's gettin' on in years, she'll need a hand
Time for movin' I know, and some things just can't wait
I didn't leave a note I hope she'll understand
DADDY WOULDN'T BUY ME A BOW WOW [also here]
(Joseph Tabrar - 1892)
I love my little cat, I do
With soft black silky hair
It comes with me each day to school
And sits upon the chair
When teacher says "why do you bring
That little pet of your's?"
I tell her that I bring my cat
Along with me because
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
I've got a little cat
And I'm very fond of that
But I'd rather have a bow-wow
Wow, wow, wow, wow
We used to have two tiny dogs
Such pretty little dears
But daddy sold 'em 'cause they used
To bite each other's ears
I cried all day, at eight each night
Papa sent me to bed
When Ma came home and wiped my eyes
I cried again and said
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
I've got a little cat
And I'm very fond of that
But I'd rather have a bow-wow
Wow, wow, wow, wow
I'll be so glad when I get old
To do just as I "likes"
I'll keep a parrot and at least
A half a dozen tykes
And when I've got a tiny pet
I'll kiss the little thing
Then put it in its little cot
And on to it I'll sing
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow! bow wow!
I've got a little cat
And I'm very fond of that
But I'd rather have a bow-wow
Wow, wow, wow, wow
If it is, I apologise
Walking with Rudy
At six I'm walking with Rudy and by seven I'm home.
Hot cup of coffee and the morning radio.
Then I open the paper to see who's made the grave.
Jump into the shower, shampoo and a shave.
Chorus
Day of the week, season of the year
Activate my mind get my body in gear.
Water rushes the river and the snow's melting fast.
You can build your stony dams but you know they won't last.
When I'm walking with Rudy, he doesn't worry about how.
Rudy's in the moment; Rudy's mindful, he's now.
Chorus
When I'm walking with friends the talk tangents on.
Turn to the east, missed the glow of the dawn.
When I'm walking with Rudy I can take time to see.
Eagles flashes the river, then he's carrying me.
Chorus
Subject: Lyr Add: THE DOG IN THE MICROWAVE (Ken Johnson)
From: Gweltas
Having scooted as quickly as possible through all the previous posts in this thread I was surprised that nobody seems to have mentioned that wonderfully gruesome dog parody to the tune of "The Lincolnshire Poacher", called "The Dog In The Microwave". Perhaps someone already has .......... if so my apologies.
THE DOG IN THE MICROWAVE
Words: Ken Johnson.
Tune : "The Lincolnshire Poacher"
There was a wife of Lincolnshire. To market she did go.
She took her dog for company across the ice and snow.
Returning from the market, they got drenched in freezing rain,
So she put her dog in the microwave to dry him out again,
Yes she put her dog in the microwave to dry him out again.
A passer-by saw the cloud of smoke and called the Fire Brigade.
The firemen cried, "Don't panic! We are here to give you aid.
No need to make a statement, for we know what you will say:
That you put your dog in the microwave—the second one today."
Oh, she put her dog in the microwave—the second one today.
A veterinary surgeon locally had an office on the street.
The wife begged him to resurrect this blackened lump of meat.
The surgeon started laughing. He guffawed, "This dog is wrecked.
If you put your dog in the microwave, what more do you expect?
If you put your dog in the microwave, what more do you expect?"
Her husband, he came from work, calling, "Honey, here I am.
Your cooking smells delicious. Is it chicken, pork or lamb?"
The wife began to tremble, and a tear came to her eye.
"Oh, I put the dog in the microwave, just like a slice of pie."
Oh, she put her dog in the microwave, just like a slice of pie.
The neighbours were inquisitive, and tactlessly enquired,
"We haven't seen your doggy. Has he recently expired?"
The wife was shaking terribly, and she began to howl,
"Oh, I put my dog in the microwave. I should have used a towel."
Oh, she put her dog in the microwave. She should have used a towel.
She went to see a medium, who charged a hefty fee.
She said, "We must communicate for the dog was dear to me."
An ectoplasmic dog appeared and started wailing like a ghost,
"OOOOOOOOh you put me the microwave and frazzled me to toast."
OOOOOOh, she put the dog in the microwave and frazzled it to toast.
She sued the manufacturers whose oven she had bought.
"These ovens are too dangerous," she sobbed in open court.
"You didn't read the manual," the lawyers said. "Just see:
If you put your dog in the microwave, it voids the guarantee.
If you put your dog in the microwave, it voids the guarantee."
The whole affair was featured on the early evening news.
The RSPCA complained of grievous dog abuse.
The Chinese correspondent sent a simple message back:
"If you put your dog in the microwave, it makes a tasty snack.
If you put your dog in the microwave, it makes a tasty snack."
My dad used to sing me "Dog Named Blue" when I could barely walk! I know someone posted it already, but I know it differently.
Got a dog named Blue
Bet ya 5 dollars he's a good one, too
Say, hello, Blue
Hmm, Hmm...
Blue chased a possum
Up a maple tree
Blue looked at the possum,
Possum looked at me
Said good boy, Blue
Hmm, Hmm...
Well, I shot that possum
Til it was dead in the ground
Gonna cook that possum
Til its golden brown
Said come on, Blue
You can have some, too
When old Blue died,
He died so hard
Took my shovel
And buried him in my backyard
Said so long, Blue
I'll be coming, too
When I get to heaven
First thing I'll do
Is blow on my horn
And call for Old Blue
Say hello, Blue
Now I'm home, too.
There is a story, common across East Anglia, of a big black dog, with flaming eyes, to see the dog is to die, so difficult to be certain that the dog really exists, as there are, of course, no witnesses!
The dog is known by various names, most commonly 'Black Shuck'
My theory is that it was essentially a 'bogey man' story, to keep people in at night.
Why this rambling in a thread about songs relating to dogs I hear you ask. A few years ago I wrote a song about said dog, which the Bounty Hounds perform regularly. You can find the song on our myspace page.
http://www.myspace.com/thebountyhounds look for 'Eyes of Flame' in the music player.
And before anyone asks, I didn't use the dogs name in the song because I couldn't find a rhyme with 'Shuck'
Recited:
As I came down Talbingo Hill
I heard a maiden cry
"There goes old Bill the bullocky!
He's bound for Gundagai."
Well, a better poor old bugger
never earned an honest crust
and a tougher bullock driver
never drug his whip through dust!
Bill's team got bogged
on Five Mile Creek;
Bill lashed and cursed and cried,
"If Nobby don't get me out of this
I'll tattoo his flamin' hide!"
Well Nobby strained and broke the yoke
and poked out Baldy's eye
and the dog shat in the tucker box
five miles from Gundagai!
followed by singing the song, "Five Miles from Gundagai", also often referred to as "Nine Miles from Gundagai".
Cheers, Rowan
Subject: Lyr Add: BADGER 'N' DOG (Fred Bailey)
From: GUEST,Fred Bailey
May I submit a memory from my own growing up in Dust Bowl country? Dave Macon's "Stay in the Wagon Yard" works for a melody.
THE BADGER'N DOG (c) Fred Bailey
Me'n my brother and our ol' dog and a kid from across the road
Went out 'a-huntin' along the crik, couple-a weeks ago
With a Barlow knife and a .22 for whatever game was there
Moose or two or a caribou or a big ol' grizzly bear
Now the first show was we shot a crow but he up't 'n flew away
Then we found a catamount track, followed him half a day
We built a campfire up on the bank jus' like the hunters do
Et some peanut butter 'n jam 'n called it rabbit stew
Then we settled back to smoke some cig-areets and talk awhile
Hell, we ain't scairt of nothin', this huntin' fits our style
Out in the woods there ain't no grown-up chores or giggley girls
Maybe someday we won't come back, just hunt clear 'round the world
But that ol' dog was 'a-sniffin' 'round this hole that was in the bank
When a big ol' badger come down the crick, movin' like a tank
That dog took him and he took for his hole but the fire got in the way
If that .22'd 'a-been loaded, man we'd-a blowed him clean away
When the badger'n dog come through that fire it looked like judgement day
We's 'a-cussin' an 'a-yellin' an 'a-sic-in' 'em on, kickin' fire ever' which way
Somehow John got smacked in the head with the barrel of the .22
An he fell in the fire and burned his pants when the badger'n dog come through
When the smoke cleared all that we could hear was a kind of a muffled bark (WOOF!)
That ol' dog was buried in the bank clean up to his hind parts
And I was bit and John was burnt but a lesson we learnt that day
That badger'n dog is a fearsome beast 'n ya better not git in his way!
Elvis sang a song "Old Shep"   makes me cry every time!
ELVIS VOLUME 2 (EP)
(US) RCA EPA 993
Released: December 1956
Side 1
So Glad You're Mine
Old Shep
Side 2
Ready Teddy
Anyplace Is Paradise
OLD SHEP [also here]
When I was a lad
And old Shep was a pup
Over hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We grew up together that way
I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out
As the years fast did roll
Old Shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him Jim
With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head
I just couldn't do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead
He came to my side
And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see
Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home
Not a song about Dogs (except, perhaps, in the sense "sons o' bitches"), but there's a verse from "The Battle of New Orleans" which always makes me laugh, which in Lonnie Donnegan's version goes,
"They ran through the briars, And they ran through the brambles,
And they ran through the bushes Where the rabbits couldn't go;
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch them-O,
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico."
and kicked him out the door.
Now on that night the doggie
Was very sad you see
Subject: Lyr Add: GOOD HAT, GOOD DOG, GOOD BOAT
From: deepdoc1
Here's Good Hat, Good Dog, Good Boat from Them Eastport Oyster Boys.
"A good hat, a good dog, a good boat"
Were Willie's partin' words; that's all he wrote.
Said: "You boys, you listen to me.
All you need is just these three:
A good hat, a good dog, a good boat."
"A good hat can keep you cool when it's hot.
A good hat can keep you warm when it's not.
Keep your brain all safe and dry
When the rain falls from the sky.
A good hat's what you need; that's not a lot.
"A good hat, a good dog, a good boat"
Were Willie's partin' words, now quote unquote.
"You don't need no limousine
Or a castle with a big old moat;
Just a good hat, a good dog, a good boat.
"A good dog will be your very bestest friend.
A good dog will stick with you through thick and thin.
They won't fuss when you come home late,
Give y' a big kiss and then they'll shake.
A good dog will be your very bestest friend.
"A good hat, a good dog, a good boat"
Were Willie's partin' words; that's all he wrote.
You can lead a life of grace and ease
If you set these priorities:
A good hat, a good dog, a good boat.
[break]
"A good boat is all you need to get around.
A good boat will take you where you're bound.
She will take you near and far.
When you're there, that's where you are.
A good boat's all you need to get around."
"Now, Willie my old friend, I do agree.
You can lead a peaceful life with just those three,
But I like a woman's company.
Ask any guy, he'll agree.
Where do women fit in your philosophy?"
Then he said, "Let's consider women for a minute.
They'll judge you by your hat and how you look in it.
But if they like the way you float your boat,
Then you hold her tight and don't let go
As long as your good dog ain't agin it."
"A good hat, a good dog, a good boat"
Were Willie's partin' words; that's all he wrote.
"You can lead a life of grace and ease
If you set these priorities:
A good hat, a good dog, a good boat.
A good hat, a good dog, a good boat.
A good hat, a good dog, a good boat."
It was a song about an old hound named Rover that was old and lazy basicly.
Subject: Lyr Add: THE POWER OF THE DOG (Rudyard Kipling)
From: GUEST,Songbob
Not a song, I think, but Rudyard Kipling said it pretty well:
THE POWER OF THE DOG
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
But when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years that nature permits
Are closing in asthma or tumors or fits
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers, or loaded guns.
Then you will find--its your own affair
But--you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will
When the whimper of welcome is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You still discover how much you care
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em the more do we grieve;
For when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Whoa! I just read the lyrics of DAD GAVE MY DOG AWAY, which was recorded by T. Texas Tyler, and which Gene posted above, back in 2007.
The same thing happened to me. There were a few differences, though. He didn't give me a bike, but he did give me $20. I suppose I could have bought a good bike for $20 or less in those days, and I definitely wanted a bike, but I didn't want that $20. I accepted it, because I had no choice, really—the dog would have been given away whether I accepted the money or not. I can't remember what, if anything, I eventually spent it on. It probably sat in my drawer for months.
I never heard of the record until now. I just looked it up—Billboard says it came out in 1959. That's about the same time, give or take a year or two, that I lost my dog.
If I had known the record existed, I probably would have bought that—and played it over and over until Dad gave the record player away, too. Well, that's what I wish I had done, looking back on it now.
I can't understand how often this song is overlooked. It is called "Dog," by the late, great Tom Dundee. I heard it done exquisitely by Bryan Bowers on the "autoparts." I play it wherever I go. For some reason, it does not seem to have, um, legs. I will gladly provide the chords to anyone who asks. It is v-e-r-y simple to play. Heck, *I* can play it. That should give you an idea...
DOG
Written by Tom Dundee
As recorded by Bryan Bowers on "By Heart"
The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
When other people had a dog; "I'm gonna get me one,"
I said, "Have a little friend around the place."
So I went to the pet store down the street
And lyin' in the middle of a canine heap
Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face.
The next few weeks were certainly strange
Between the barkin' and the thinkin' up of names
Old Blue he wasn't and Spot didn't really apply
So I settled for Harry, just because
That's how he is and that's how he was
And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by.
For a time I was careful where I sat
The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat
And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad
But it's been pretty even after all
I taught him what I know about playin' ball
And he's helped me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have.
Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers
And we all sit around, take turns rubbin' his ears
And callin' him; it's been that way ever since he was a pup.
He sleeps on the bed and when I turn over,
He turns over, then I turn over,
Then he turns over, then I turn over, and we get up.
As my life keeps movin' through the different conditions
The big changes come with the slightest decisions
You're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I've found.
'Cause who ever thought I'd ever dote on a pet,
But lookin' back now, I always forget
How I filled up the time before my dog was around.
I'll fetch that stick yet one more time
If you really want me to
I'll happily run into the water again
And bring it back to you
But I can't understand it and I have to say
If you want it so bad why do you throw it away?
But I'm happy to be here and happy to say
It's a dog's life, after all.
BIRD DOG
ISong credits:
words & music by John McCutcheon & Si Kahn
I was trained to point and fetch
Beneath the hunter's gun
But at the trials I failed my test
'Cause I love everyone
No bird has ever done me harm
And I wish them no ill
And though I will not hunt at all
I am a bird dog still
Chorus:
I am a bird dog watch me fly
My nose into the wind
Leaping through the sky
With my fine feathered friends
Oh, our lives are much too short
And our time is not our own
May I live and die
A faithful bird dog
I do not try to disappoint
Or mean to disobey
There is no reason you'd suspect
I'd go another way
For we are born to what we are
With choices we must make
I see no point in taking sides
I see no sides to take
Chorus
This is the mystery at the heart:
You would fly if just you could
And ever faithful I would keep you
Safe within the wood
Some think that when you lose your dreams
You come crashing to the ground
Still others fear the thing they love
And live to bring it down
Chorus
IT'S A DOG'S LIFE
Song credits:
words & music John McCutcheon & Si Kahn
for Zöe and Obray
Chorus:
It's a dog's life as the family pet
The more you beg, the more you get
Eat like a horse, sleep like a log
It's a dog's life when you're the family dog
Letter carrier coming up the walk
Think I'll go over and have a little talk
Have you got any mail for me today?
Or are you gonna holler "Get away! Get away!"
Chorus
When we go to the mountains, when we go to the beach
They keep those kids on a mighty short leash
Mom's doggone tired at the end of the day
Just a-trying to keep all those little puppies at bay
Chorus
When they finally go to bed I'm working really hard
Howlin' at the moon and diggin' up the yard
Dad'll start growling in the middle of the night
But his bark is a whole lot worse than his bite
Chorus
For the kids and the cat and the Pa and Ma
I've got a cold nose and a warm paw
So don't get a gerbil or a hamster or a frog
Get yourself a friend! Get a dog! Get a dog!
Chorus
From: Charley Noble
Has anyone suggested that this thread should be "curtailed"?
There's a whole set of Cicely Fox Smith poems about hunting dogs. Here's a sample:
Little Waxy
Wake, little Waxy! Hunting-time again,
The short days and goodly, the clean Autumn rain:
In the old North country, in the grey open weather,
Hounds upon the moorland chiming all together.
This year in dough and hollow the stream's song sounds the same:
On every windy hillside the grasses burn like flame:
Where the empty air is loud with the peewit's lonely crying
And the call o' the moorland gale to the bird's call replying.
Wake, little Waxy! Voices that you know
Set the upland ringing where the hill-breezes blow;
In the brave North country, in the grey open weather,
Up and Join the chorus, hound and horn together!
Ah, little Waxy! Hunting days are done,
Nevermore the brown field and the rain and the sun –
Only the memories left, o'er the Autumn fields that hover,
Of the brave runs ended, lass, the good days over!
From: Joe Offer
My dog Ralph died today, so I've been thinking about dog songs. I'm glad I found this thread. I came across a song called "My Dog Sam" when I was working on the Rise Again songbook last year. My dog already had congestive heart failure, so I knew he didn't have long to live. This song really struck me.
MY DOG SAM
(Bill Harley)
My dog Sam was a good old dog
He was my best friend
Now he's gone & he won't be back
And I'll never see him again / I'll never see him again
My mom brought him from the pound / When I was only 3
She gave him baths, my dad gave him bones
But he mostly belonged to me / He mostly…
Sam chased rabbits, Sam chased squirrels
One time he caught a skunk
We washed him in tomato juice
But you know that dog still stunk / You know…
The first night that I slept outside
I was so scared I thought I'd die
The sky was big & the night was dark
But Sam stayed right by my side / He slept…
The other night I woke from sleep
I knew something was wrong
I'd seen Sam in my dreams
And I knew that old Sam was gone
I've still got Sam's tennis ball
I keep it in my penny can
I'm gonna get me another dog
But I'll never get another Sam
OLD CUR
As recorded by The Limeliters on "Look at Love...in Depth" (1965)
I've got a spot in my heart for my faithful hound,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
Many's the hours we've spent together in easy camaraderie.
I never felt the need to talk; you never barked at me,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
I've got a place in my heart for that loyal beast,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
You've got no best-of-breed blue ribbon; dog fanciers say you're a fool,
Because you are a dropout from their old obedience school,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
They say you're a mutt but your sire was a giant Nottingham prim(?); your dam was a toy passive(?) blue,[*]
And though you're kind of a mixed-up beast, you've got good blood in you.
Ah, you're no kind o' watchdog, Old Cur.
You're no trick dog, bird dog, seek(?) or sled dog.
You're just a plain old sleep-at-the-foot-of-the-bed dog.
You can't fetch, sit, heel, speak, roll over, flush, or mush,
And the only command y'understand is "stay."
You been here seven years a week ago today.
You know you ain't s'posed to be on the bed, old buddy.
Sometimes when I contemplate the state of things, cursin' fate,
It's then you lick my hand, and how well I appreciate
It doesn't take a bell to make you salivate.
Fetch me a tissue, Old Cur.
There's a room in my heart for my faithful friend,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
You bring a creature comfort to computerized society.
You are the only living thing who has a need for me,
Old Cur (Old Cur).
DON'T CRY BLUE
As recorded by Jonathan Edwards on "Jonathan Edwards" (1971).
I heard them engines runnin' on the road away from home,
Sound like thunder callin' out my name.
Well, I listened hard the first time that I heard 'em roll along.
I listened and I never been the same.
CHORUS: Well, don't cry, cry, Blue,
'Cause I'm comin' home to you.
Well, I walked with you this mornin' and I'll sleep with you tonight.
Don't cry, cry, Blue.
Highway's just a two-lane road connectin' either way.
Oh, I've seen enough of this end for a while,
But I've got to go the distance till I know I've seen a change;
Got to know the feel of ev'ry mile.
When my head is achin', full of ev'rywhere I've been,
Oh, I've turned my face around the other way,
And I'll meet you at the mailbox, read you all my cards,
Tell you what I really meant to say.
WHEN DOGS DREAM
As recorded by Lon Jones on "When the Moon Comes Down for Tea" (2010)
Dogs spend the nighttime and most of the daytime
Not awake, not asleep, but right in between.
Sometimes they slip and fall off to dreamland.
Wiggling whiskers, they twitch and they growl,
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream.
Many have wondered just what dogs dream about.
I asked several dogs. It's something like this:
Squirrel teases dog up in a tree.
Dog climbs up tree. Dog eats squirrel,
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream.
When dogs dream, they dream about the things you do,
Like petting them or tossing them a bone.
They're on the hunt or fighting fearsome battles.
They wake up surprised to be back home.
Chasing off bad guys into the night,
Master throws a Frisbee made of steak.
Fifi the poodle, miniature and dainty,
Doberman tries to sniff her; she kicks that dog's butt.
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream.
When dogs dream, I can't help but wondering
About the scientific borderline
That runs between the animals and people.
When dogs dream, there ain't no borderline,
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream,
When dogs dream.
I WANNA BE A DOG
As recorded by Barry Louis Polisar on "Old Dogs, New Tricks" (1993)*
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna wag my tail,
Chase cars and knock over garbage cans,
Bite the man who brings the mail.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna lie on the floor,
And chase squirrels and cats, get fed, get fat,
Chew your shoe and bark at the door.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna dig big holes,
Flirt with french poodles and basset hounds,
And pee on telephone poles.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna drool on the ground,
Scratch fleas and ticks and run after sticks.
I just wanna be a hound.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna roll in the dirt.
I wanna run in the street and get mud on my feet,
And jump up onto your shirt.
Oh, I wanna have dog breath,
Wake the neighbors, too.
Well, I'll lick your hand, be the best friend to man.
Don't have nothin' better to do.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Want my nose to be wet.
I got a college degree, but all I wanna be
Is somebody else's pet.
Oh, I wanna be a dog.
Wanna wag my tail.
Chase cars and knock over garbage cans,
And bite whoever tries to bring us the mail.
Ee, by gum!
I have a dog; his name is Rover.
When he shits, he shits all over.
Shit all round the room, me boys, shit all round the room.
[Similarly, with the same responses:]
I have a dog; his name is Fritz.
He shits and shits and shits and shits.
I have a dog, a big Great Dane.
He wipes his bum and he pulls the chain.
[The album "Handling Swollen Goods" (2005) contains these additional verses:]
I have a dog; he's as big as that.
He got diarrhea and he buried the cat.
I have a dog with a triangular rectum.
Toblerones shoot out when you least expect 'em.
I have a fucking great big Rottweiler; his name is Jim,
And where he shits is entirely up to him.
I have a little Chihuahua; his name is Cliff.
His turds are small but they don't half niff.
I have a dog; his name is Solzhenitsyn.
QUEEN OF THE RAILS
As recorded by Utah Phillips on "Good Though!" (1973)
1. I guess his name was Boomer Bill.
If that won't do, another will.
A hobo doesn't need a name 'cause he never gets no mail;
And the only friend old Boomer had
To ride with him through good and bad
Was a shaggy little mongrel he called Queen of the Rails.
2. The black-smoke choo-choo's gone away.
Bummin' it's just not the same.
Dreams are few and far between but mem'ries seldom fail.
Waiting down there by the track
For her master to come back,
You can count on seein' that old dog called Queen of the Rails.
3. Old boomer bummed the Ryo Grande,
The Santa Fee, and never planned
On where he'd be from day to day, the jungle or the jail;
But when the snow was fallin' down,
He'd catch a California-bound
With that little dog to keep him warm, old Queen of the Rails.
4. [Repeat #2]
5. One day he went to get a bone,
Left his little pal alone.
He crossed the coupling joints of the train that blocked the yard.
They switched a reefer off the main
And humped it into Boomer's train.
He fell and died beneath the iron wheel so cold and hard.
6. The black-smoke choo-choo's gone away.
Bummin' it's just not the same.
Dreams are few and far between but mem'ries seldom fail.
If there's a place for some old friend
Who waits until the journey's end,
The Boomer he'll be glad to see old Queen of the Rails.
From: Jim Dixon
I found this at monologues.co.uk. There were no stanza breaks, so I inserted some. I have no idea if this was originally written as a song or a recitation, but it seems some people have sung it.
DIXIE'S DOG
Written by Bernard Wrigley
One day not very long ago in a patch of pea soup fog,
I put my scarf and coat on for a walk outside wi' t'dog.
The air was thick; you couldn't see a yard or two down t'street
When something stopped in front of me—a pair of policeman's feet.
There grew from them some trousers—they were dyed in navy blue—
A helmet, a coat and a pair of hands, with a notebook in 'em too.
I pretends I hasn't seen him, like, there being so much fog.
Then a thund'rous voice booms out, "Now where's your licence for your dog?"
Well, times were bad and jobs were scarce; I'd had to go on t'dole,
And all the money I'd scraped together I'd spent on food and coal.
He knew I had no licence; he was kicking up a fuss.
He says, "Bring it in tomorrow or you'll be having your tea with us."
So all next day I sat at home and looked at t'chimbley flue,
Wond'ring if he'd come around and thinking what to do.
Then I heard a noise at t'top o't'road, it sounded like flat feet,
And I knew it was that copper as he trundled down the street.
So I hid myself behind the door as he began to knock.
He'd no idea I were so near I could even smell his socks.
When he got tired he went away and I brewed me a cup of tea,
And I thought whatever happened, t'last laugh'd be on me.
So next day two burly rozzers come a-swaggering in the place
But I had my licence ready, and a grin all o'er my face.
He says, "Ey up! You were stony broke when I met you in the fog.
How can you afford a licence?" I says, "I've sold my bloody dog."
GOD DOG
As recorded by the Incredible String Band, on "The Chelsea Sessions, 1967" (1997)
This dog is no puppy dog; she's strange as the trees.
She is brown as the mountain and white as the breeze.
She walks on the water without any boots.
Her eyes are as fine as the music of flutes;
But she will not sweep chimneys nor will she pluck corn,
But she is the best little dog that ever was born.
I've lain in the womb of the rocks cold and chill
While she speaks in my heart with the voice of the hill;
And when I am risen and ready to run,
She will laugh without laughter to welcome the sun;
But she will not learn language nor will she bear scorn,
But she is the best little dog that ever was born.
The water god offered me the ring of his rings
To buy the dog from me to teach the poor kings.
The ring's on my finger; the dog runs behind,
Since watery palaces would ne'er suit her mind;
But as yet she can't fly well, nor play on the horn,
Still she is the best little dog that ever was born.
From: Jim Dixon
Similar theme to Hank Williams' MOVE IT ON OVER, from 1947.
MOVE OVER ROVER
As recorded by Al Dexter, 1953.
1. Married men will all agree: a dog is man's best friend.
He'll stick to you through thick and thin; they're faithful to the end.
I have a dog named Rover, who adds up just that way,
And when I really need a friend, I go to him and say:
CHORUS: Oh, move over, Rover, and make room for a friend.
Move over, Rover, and let your old pal in.
I'm gettin' tired and sleepy; on you I can depend,
So move over, Rover, and let your old pal in.
2. I went out the other night to get myself a beer,
And there I met the cutest one and closer I drew near.
About that time my wife walked in and ante'd up the score,
So now I'm out at Rover's house a-knockin' at the door.
3. I've been locked out many times; it seems like many more.
I've been thrown into the jugs until I lost the score,
So when she's on the warpath, I love old Rover so,
'Cause she will call the doggone cops and back in jail I go.
4. I have done some slippin' 'round but I won't slip no more,
For she caught me out with a blonde and got her forty-four.
Now when she pulls that rusty gat and draws her bead on me,
I go hunt for Rover's house and help him share his fleas.
MOVE OVER ROVER
As recorded by Wynonie Harris
Man's best friend sure must 'a' been a dog.
Some o' these women I know ain't got no love at all.
CHORUS: Move over, Rover, and let me in.
Looks like I'm gonna be livin' in your doghouse again.
Get over, Rover; let me in; you're my best friend.
Early tonight a man was beatin' his wife.
I tried to help her out and she drew her pocket knife.
I went out with the boys to get a little taste,
And now that I'm back home, she wants to slap me in the face.
I needed a vacation; I took a little trip.
I got back home this mornin' an' my woman done packed my grip.
BOB THE DOG
As sung by Con Ó Drisceoil in a field recording found Góilín Song Project.
1. I'll sing of a dog they called Bob in this mournful rhyme.
With a surgical blade he was spayed while still in his prime.
He was properly vexed when his sexual ambitions were foiled.
He was deprived of romance and his chances of passion are spoiled.
2. In his youth he had sport and he courted with vigor and joy.
His fine apparatus had status that reached to the sky.
The grandest young bitches were itching to have him for life,
But they've all disappeared since his spheres were removed by the knife.
3. And he suffered no slurs from those curs who came looking for fight.
One growl at those whelps and they'd yelp and directly take flight.
But since losing his cluster he's flustered and shaking with fear.
His courage gone limp, he's a wimp without conjugal gear.
4. His technique was so suave with palaver and personal charm.
His foreplay insured, they were lured to fall into his arms.
But since losing his tackle, he's rattled, upset and dismayed.
With no tunes in his flute the poor brute can no longer get laid.
5. And a man came the way yesterday with his bitch for a poke.
He had heard that our hound was renowned for the strength of his yoke.
I said: "Sorry, you're late and your fate with misfortune is crowned.
Since our Bobby got neutered, his shooter can't fire any round."
6. Of the day he was gelded I'll tell, though your nerves will be shot.
He was lying on a slab when a jab of the needle he got.
There was vets in attendance resplendent in surgical robes,
Then with one rapid snip out they whipped his connubial globes.
7. And how can a mutt without nut look(?) to future that's great?
Without utensils nuptial, no pups shall he e'er procreate.
Since losing his fittings he's quitting romantic affairs,
For the skill to seduce is no use when there's nothing downstairs.
8. So the days when this codger would roger all round him have ceased.
He won't couple again with the shin of our old parish priest.
He's trying medical notions and potions that seep through his pores.
His appliance to refuel for his duels he expects to restore.
[You can hear Janet Lynch sing this song on YouTube, but she skips verses 3 and 7.]
From: Jim Dixon
DOES YOUR DOG AGONIZE?
As recorded by Lou & Peter Berryman on "The Universe: 14 Examples" (2007)
Does your dog agonize?
And do you empathize?
Do his dreams wallow in
The dog he could 'a' been?
And if you ask him: "Hey,
Have you been good today?"
Does he avert his eyes?
Does your dog agonize?
Does he ask of your cat:
"Why can't I be like that?
So full of confidence,
A pet of consequence."
And does that reinforce
His core of deep remorse?
Though he's fine otherwise,
Does your dog agonize?
Did your dog write the book
About the hang-dog look?
Does his tail droop and drag
Then give one feeble wag?
Does he eye doggie girls
And whine when spotting squirrels,
But then apologize?
Does your dog agonize?
Does he think maybe you
Should find him things to do,
Like maybe blow your wad
On the Iditarod?
Then feel ashamed that he
Can't independently
Learn to self-actualize?
Does your dog agonize?
BRIDGE: Some say that maybe we
Anthropomorphically
Project our own regrets
On unsuspecting pets.
I s'pose it may be true
It's really me who's blue.
I don't tell my dog, though.
It makes him worry so.
Does your dog agonize?
And do you empathize?
Do his dreams wallow in
The dog he could 'a' been?
And if you ask him: "Hey,
Have you been good today?"
Does he avert his eyes?
Does your dog agonize?
Shit all round the room, tra-la, shit all round the room.
A couple of additional verses:
From: Jim Dixon
This is the poem that kytrad (Jean Ritchie) quoted from back on 26 Feb 07 - 06:15 PM. However, her 3rd verse is actually from a different poem (see below).
From Favourite Rhymes for the Nursery [no author or editor identified] (London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1887), page 65:
MY LITTLE DOGGY.
I had a little Doggy
That used to sit and beg.
Doggy tumbled down the stairs
And broke his little leg.
Oh! Doggy, I will nurse you,
And try to make you well;
And you shall have a collar
With a pretty little bell.
Ah! Doggy, don't you think you
Should very faithful be,
For having such a loving friend
To comfort you as me.
And when your leg is better,
And you can run and play,
We'll have a scamper in the fields,
And see them making hay.
But, Doggy, you must promise
(And mind your word you keep)
Not once to tease the little lambs,
Or run among the sheep.
And then the yellow "chicks,"
That play upon the grass,
You must not even wag your tail
To scare them as you pass.
MATTIE'S WANTS AND WISHES.
I wants a piece of talito
To make my doll a dress;
I doesn't want a big piece—
A yard'll do, I guess.
I wish you'd fred my needle,
And find my fimble, too—
I has such heaps o' sowin',
I don't know what to do.
My Hepsy tored her apron
A tum'lin' down the stair;
And Caesar 's lost his pantaloons,
And needs anozzer pair.
I wants my Maud a bonnet,
She hasn't none at all;
And Fred must have a jacket,
His uzzer one's too small.
I wants to go to grandma's,
You promised me I might;
I know she'll like to see me—
I wants to go to-night.
She lets me wash the dishes,
And see in grandpa's watch—
Wish I'd free, four pennies,
To buy some butter-scotch.
I wants some newer mittens,
I wish you'd knit me some,
'Cause 'most my fingers freezes,
They leak so in the fum.
I wored it out last summer
A-pullin' George's sled;
I wish you wouldn't laugh so—
It hurts my in my head.
I wish I had a cooky—
I'm hungry's I can be;
If you hasn't pretty large ones,
You'd better bring me free.
OL' RED
As recorded by Blake Shelton on "Blake Shelton" (2001)
Well, I caught my wife with another man and it cost me a ninety-nine
On a prison farm in Georgia, close to the Florida line.
Well, I've been here for two long years; I fin'lly made the warden my friend,
And so he sentenced me to a life of ease, takin' care of ol' Red.
Now ol' Red he's the damnedest dog that I've ever seen.
Got a nose that can smell a two-day trail; he's a four-legged trackin' machine.
You can consider yourself mighty lucky to get past the gators and the quicksand beds,
But all these years that I been here, ain't nobody got past Red.
CHORUS: And the warden sang: "Come on, somebody; why don't you run?
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun.
Get my lantern; get my gun.
Red'll have you treed 'fore the mornin' comes."
Well, I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter to my cousin up in Tennessee.
He brought down a blue-tick hound; she was pretty as she could be.
Well, they penned her up in the swampland 'bout a mile just south o' the gate.
I'd take old Red for his evenin' run; I'd just drop him off an' wait. CHORUS
Now ol' Red got real used to seein' his lady ever' night,
So I kept him away for three or four days and waited till the time got right.
Well, I made my run with the evenin' sun and I smiled when I heard 'em turn Red out,
'Cause I was headed north to Tennessee and ol' Red was headed south. CHORUS
Now there's red-haired blue ticks all in the South.
Love got me in here and love got me out.
From: Jim Dixon
Harvard University library has a broadside, not viewable online, but cataloged thus:
BRANNIGAN'S PUP
sung by John O'Neil and John Conroy with great success
no songwriter identified
New York: H.R. Prowell's Book Exhange, 1886.
First line: Now old Mickey Brannigan had a bull pup
I found these lyrics in Irish Song Book, No. 1 (New York: Wehman Bros., 1909), page 116:
BRANNIGAN'S PUP
Now old Mickey Brannigan had a bull-pup.
He was bred of rale elegant stock.
For seventeen hours a battle he fought;
He did, by my soul, by the clock.
His tail was a neat little bit of a stump,
Bow-legged and two crooked eyes.
One look at his ugly-looking mug was enough.
He was the divil himself in disguise.
CHORUS: Bow-ow-ow, what a pup to be sure.
For fighting he'd never give up.
There never was known such a wonderful dog
As Mickey Brannigan's pup.
He tore the tail off Maloney's best coat,
Ate the bustle of Mary Ann Flynn,
And run between young Kitty Mulligan's legs.
Now wasn't that truly a sin?
He caught up the Dutch shoemaker's dog,
And shook him around like a rat.
He murdered Tim Finnegan's beautiful goat,
Ate the tail of McManus' cat.
An Italian came around with an organ one day,
And a monkey tied fast to a string;
And when the pup saw them, he howled with delight,
And made a most wonderful spring.
He upset the monkey, grinder and all,
And bursted the organ inside;
And, be jabers, he tried to swallow the monk,
But he choked on his tail and he died.
There was an album: "Ted Ashlaw—Adirondack Woods Singer," consisting of field recordings, issued by Philo #1022, 1976, which contained a song called MICKEY BRANNIGAN'S PUP.
There was a 78-rpm record, NEVER TAKE THE HORSESHOE FROM THE DOOR b/w BRANNIGAN'S PUP, Decca 25049, made by Pat Harrington with orchestra, which was part of an album called "Irish Come-All-Ye's," 1949.
OLD DOGS
As recorded by Bill Staines on "Old Dogs" (2007)
Old dogs lie beside the door.
They toss and turn and scratch and snore.
They fight again their puppy wars
    Of playful battles raging.
Old dogs lie alone at night.
They tuck their tails; they curl up tight.
They howl when moons are full and bright
    And recall when they were lovers.
Old dogs have a song to sing.
Old dogs like 'most ev'rything.
They care not what the weather brings
    Except when it is thunder.
Old dogs look you in the eye.
They hold your heart; they never lie.
They bark at planes up in the sky
    And wish that they were fliers.
Old dogs dream about the past
When they frolicked fields of golden grass
And chased the icy winter's blast
    To lie by home fires burning.
Old dogs wander off alone.
Old dogs know the way back home,
The slightest scent, the very bone
    Of hunter home returning.
Old dogs come and old dogs go.
Old dogs always seem to know
That love is life's most precious flow
    And love is worth the waiting.
When their time on earth is through,
Old dogs are forever true,
And round the bend they wait for you
    Come some tomorrow morning.
When their time on earth is through,
Old dogs are forever true,
And round the bend they wait for you,
    Come some tomorrow morning.
SINATRA AND I
(James Keelaghan)
As recorded by James Keelaghan on "Home" (2001)
I have to admit there's a strange tale between us,
A twisted road windin' between you and I.
I was livin' in a garret on the edges of Staten.
I was lyin' in bed lookin' out at the night.
The gray sky exploded; fire rained down.
Some refinery in Jersey burned to the ground.
Call me superstitious; I called it a sign.
I packed up the van, headed out for the line.
I wandered for months; it was gorgeous but somehow
I didn't know what I was tryin' to find.
The last days of summer found me crossing the border.
I was feelin' quite lonely, right out of my mind.
I stopped in Regina; my spirits were low.
If I didn't do somethin' I was bound to explode.
If I was gonna keep trav'lin', I needed a date.
I rolled the van to a stop at the S.P.C.A.
There he sat curled up back in the corner,
Face like a bandit, and icy blue eyes.
They opened the gate; he casually strolled
Out of the kennel, into my life.
So it was that Sinatra and I went a-rovin'.
Yeah, that's what I called him because of his eyes.
Turns out as well he's a pretty good singer,
Though he tends more to blues than to Strangers at Night.*
Old Blue Eyes beside me, we kept headin' north.
Near Whitehorse the van fin'lly gave up the ghost.
Got a job at a cafe where Sinatra begged scraps,
Savin' our money for spark plugs and maps.
Oh....
Some nights we'd both get cabin fever.
We'd go for a walk, old Sinatra and I,
His nose on the ground sniffing out possibilities,
Me lookin' out to the dome of the sky.
I'd ask him to sit but he'd pay me no mind.
He'll do it his way and I'll do it mine.
That's why I like him; what's more, that's why
I think there's a future for Sinatra and I.
[* I assume this refers to Sinatra's hit STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT."]
Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF THE DROVER (Henry Lawson)
From: Jim Dixon
Following is the complete poem that I found in In the Days when the World was Wide: And Other Verses by Henry Lawson (Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1896), page 99. I have italicized the lines that Martyn Wyndham-Read sings on his album "Emu Plains" (2001). MW-R made some changes in wording which I have not recorded here.
THE BALLAD OF THE DROVER
Words by Henry Lawson
Across the stony ridges,
Across the rolling plain,
Young Harry Dale, the drover,
Comes riding home again.
And well his stock-horse bears him,
And light of heart is he,
And stoutly his old pack-horse
Is trotting by his knee.
Up Queensland way with cattle
He travelled regions vast;
And many months have vanished
Since home-folk saw him last.
He hums a song of someone
He hopes to marry soon;
And hobble-chains and camp-ware
Keep jingling to the tune.
Beyond the hazy dado
Against the lower skies,
And yon blue line of ranges,
The homestead station lies.
And thitherward the drover
Jogs through the lazy noon,
While hobble-chains and camp-ware
Are jingling to a tune.
An hour has filled the heavens
With storm-clouds inky black;
At times the lightning trickles
Around the drover's track
But Harry pushes onward;
His horses' strength he tries,
In hope to reach the river
Before the flood shall rise.
The thunder from above him
Goes rolling o'er the plain;
And down on thirsty pastures
In torrents falls the rain.
And every creek and gully
Sends forth its little flood,
Till the river runs a banker,
All stained with yellow mud.
Now Harry speaks to Rover,
The best dog on the plains,
And to his hardy horses,
And strokes their shaggy manes;
'We've breasted bigger rivers
"When floods were at their height,
"Nor shall this gutter stop us
"From getting home to-night!"
The thunder growls a warning,
The ghastly lightnings gleam,
As the drover turns his horses,
To swim the fatal stream.
But, oh! the flood runs stronger
Than e'er it ran before;
The saddle-horse is failing,
And only half-way o'er!
When flashes next the lightning,
The flood's grey breast is blank,
And a cattle dog and pack-horse
Are struggling up the bank.
But on the bank to northward,
Or on the southern shore,
The stock-horse and his rider
Will struggle out no more.
The faithful dog a moment
Sits panting on the bank,
And then swims through the current
To where his master sank.
And round and round in circles,
He fights with failing strength,
Till, borne down by the waters,
The old dog sinks at length.
Across the flooded lowlands
And slopes of sodden loam
The pack-horse struggles onward,
To take dumb tidings home.
And mud-stained, wet, and weary,
Through ranges dark goes he,
The hobble-chains and tinware,
Are sounding eerily.
The floods are in the ocean,
The stream is clear again,
And now a verdant carpet
Is stretched across the plain.
But someone's eyes are saddened,
And someone's heart still bleeds
In sorrow for the drover
Who sleeps among the reeds.
OLD TIGE
As recorded by Jim Reeves, 1966.
[Sung by female backup singers:]
Tige, you were faithful, faithful to the end.
Tige, how I miss you; you were my best friend.
[Recited by Reeves:]
Three years of army service done and I was headin' home at last.
I got to thinkin' 'bout my dog and things long gone and past,
How old Tige pulled me from the creek when I'd no pulse or breath,
And how he had saved me from the chargin' bull that gored my dad to death.
As a kid I'd dream of bears and tremble to my toes
Till old Tige would come up to my bed and nudge me with his nose,
And then my fears would melt away and Tige would go lie down,
And I'd drift on back to sleep without another sound.
The big bus stopped and I got off; it was awful dark and thick with fog;
Then something gently nuzzled me and there stood Tige my dog.
I wondered if my faithful dog had met the bus each day,
And all the dreary winter nights since I'd been away.
To have Tige meet me here like this, I was really glad,
'Cause I hadn't needed Tige so much since the day they buried Dad.
Two long miles still lay ahead, but what I didn't know,
A giant dam was being built where the old road used to go.
I thank the Lord for sendin' Tige and I followed where he led,
Knowing well without his help that I'd be good as dead.
Tige inched along this way and that, goin' rough and slow,
And I could hear the water lapping at the ledges far below;
Then through the mist I saw a light and Mother in her chair,
And I reached down to pat old Tige—but he wasn't there.
"I'm thankful, Mom, you had old Tige these three lonely years.
I owe my life to him tonight;" I couldn't help my tears.
"You say you wrote me 'bout the dam, well, God was sure with us.
I didn't get your letter, Mom, but old Tige met the bus."
"I hate to tell you, son," she said, "but now you've got to know.
When you left it broke his heart; Tige died three years ago."
[Note: "Tige" is pronounced with a hard "g"--short for "Tiger" I suppose.]
[Chorus] King went a-runnin' after deer,
Wasn't scared of jumping off the truck in high gear.
King went a-sniffing and he would go,
Was the best old hound dog I ever did know.
I had a dog and his name was King.
Then one day the King up and died.
Then I thought about the times we had:
Once when I kicked him when he was bad.
Old King sure meant a lot to me,
But that hound dog is history. [Chorus]
That old King was a friend of mine.
Never knew a dog that was half as fine.
I may find one; you never do know,
'Cause I still got a long way to go.
GEORGE'S SON
John Kirkpatrick
As recorded by The John Kirkpatrick Band on "Force of Habit" (1996)
Oh, there was George and there was George's Son.
Two finer dogs, oh, they never did run,
And they worked the sheep, and they worked 'em well,
Oh, but George's Son, he could run like hell.
Oh, one dark night when all were safe asleep,
To George's Son, oh, some devil did creep,
Sayin', "Show your master, show him true,
What young George's Son with them sheep can do."
Oh, how they scrambled and how they flew,
And how they thundered that parish through.
How high the cliff he drove them along,
Oh, and in his ears rang that devil's song.
Their clattering bells roused this shepherd bold,
And at that sound, oh, his blood ran cold,
And he prayed for mercy with all his might,
Saying, "Some demon rides with my sheep this night."
And quickly, quickly he ran the ground,
And quickly, quickly that cliff he found,
And quickly, quickly he raised his gun,
And the devil smiled on young George's Son.
A flock was lost, and a fortune too,
And a brisk young farmer cold ruin knew.
To some labouring job he was forced to come,
Oh, but his saddest loss was young George's Son.
But there was George and there was George's Son.
Two finer dogs, oh they never did run,
And they worked the sheep, and they worked 'em well,
Oh, but George's Son, he could run like hell.
[Notes copied from MainlyNorfolk.info:]
John Kirkpatrick sang his own song on Brass Monkey's 1986 album See How It Runs. According to the album sleeve notes, he wrote it "for a dramatisation by the Orchard Theatre company of Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd but not used in the end. This song is a synopsis of chapter five." The LP was re-released in 1993 as second half of the CD The Complete Brass Monkey.
All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he'll get
So, I love my dog as much as I love you
OLD BEN
As recorded by Chris Flegg on "The Sound of Life" 2008.
Old Ben lies sleeping, quiet and still,
No more to run the fields and hills.
Of herding sheep, he's had his fill.
He'll go no more a-working.
Old Ben's a dog of many years,
Now shabby coat and crumpled ears,
With clouded eye and grizzled beard.
He'll go no more a-working.
He knows his master's call so well:
"Come by, get back, stay down, to heel."
A younger dog his job now steals.
He'll go no more a-working.
His basket by the augur lies.
He stiffly turns around and sighs.
Though he still barks at passers-by.
He'll go no more a-working.
Then sometimes he will rise alert
When down the lane his master's heard.
He tries to run but must return.
He'll go no more a-working.
And will I miss my working days,
And sit and dream my time away,
Or make life one long holiday?
I'll go no more a-working.
Old Ben lies sleeping, quiet and still,
No more to run the fields and hills.
Of herding sheep, he's had his fill.
He'll go no more a-working.
I FOUND MY BEST FRIEND IN THE DOG POUND
As recorded by Jesse Lee Jones on the various-artists collection "Doggone Country: Favorite Songs about Dogs" (2008)
I found my best friend in the dog pound,
The best friend that I ever had.
When other friends failed me, my pal with the tail,
He still came to see me when I was in jail.
I found my best friend in the dog pound.
He's an old pris'ner like me,
Who'll always be grateful, when the dog catcher caught him,
That I set him free.
I found my best friend in the dog pound.
He's an old pris'ner like me,
Who'll always be grateful, when a dog catcher caught him,
That I set him free.
For one measly dollar,
A tag for his collar,
I set him free.
I set him free.
Oh, I set him free.
[Originally recorded by Burl Ives, apparently. Ives' arrangement is marred, in my opinion, by background singers singing words even sappier than these.]
THE POODLE DOG SONG
As recorded by Layne Brooks on the various-artists collection "Doggone Country: Favorite Songs about Dogs" (2008)
Now I'm gon' tell ya 'bout a dog I got, born in Kansas City.
I picked him up in New Orleans; I thought he was so pretty.
He's crazy 'bout his lemon pie, loves to eat green onions,
And diggin' 'taters from the ground, his paws are full o' bunions.
CHORUS: He's my pretty little poodle dog.
Got a face just like a frog.
Oh, my pretty little poodle, doodle-doodle-doodle,
Pretty little poodle-doodle dog. REPEAT
He fell in love with a rooster once, who lived down near my cabin,
And ev'ry night when the sun went down, these two would start to gabbin'.
My little poodle would start to bark; the rooster would spring his crowin',
And the way these two would bill and coo, you'd think the wind was blowin'. CHORUS TWICE
Well, they kept this up for six long months, and then one night they fighted.
My little poodle came a-limpin' home and he was all excited.
He came right up to me and said: "Please don't give me a lickin'.
Just get out the grease and the fryin' pan because we gonna have fried chicken." CHORUS TWICE
[This was apparently first recorded by Jimmie Davis in 1950, but I haven't heard that version.]
A POLITICIAN'S DOG
Written by Billy Ed Wheeler
As recorded by Layne Brooks on the various-artists collection "Doggone Country: Favorite Songs about Dogs" (2008)
Well, now, I was born on a Texas ranch,
But it seems like I never did get the chance
To cut the mustard like my daddy Rover,
Roll in the grass and get dirty all over.
I'm a dog. Registered beagle. The name of our little ol' ranch was the LBJ.
When I's just a long-eared, wet-nosed pup,
Big daddy Lyndon came an' picked me up,
Held me seven feet in the Texas sky
And he said to a bunch o' news men standin' by:
"His name's Him. Him's a he-dog." Some o' them fellows didn't believe him, had to look for themselves.
Well, I picked up all the hound-dog habits,
Coolin' fire-plugs an' chasin' rabbits,
Even had one or two lady friends,
But that's where the end o' my fun begins,
Because one day the president pulled my ear
And he said: "Sorry, Him; it's an election year."
Flash bulbs popped like a machine gun,
An' I knew right then I'd have to help him run.
Me in luck, wantin' some night life. Just a big ol' frustrated beagle in a jet airplane.
Well me an' my sister Her set sail
With LBJ on the campaign trail,
Tryin' to keep the Republicans fumin',
Flyin' around till I's sick as a human,
Workin' all day and stayin' up late,
Lickin' tourists through the White-House gate,
Nibblin' congressmen, keepin' them nervous,
Playin' hide-an'-seek with the Secret Service,
Trackin' down Russians. Bitin' ambassadors. Tryin' to learn how to bark in a foreign language.
I tell you right now it's gettin' me down.
Ever' time a king or a queen hits town,
The vet hurries over an' combs my hair,
Clips my nails and sprays me ev'rywhere
Till I smell like a hundred magnolia trees,
And the powder flies ever' time I sneeze.
I could leave all this stuff alone
For a good case o' fleas an' one ol' bone,
But that's politics. Had to get out the vote. Sleep with a stopped-up nose in an air-conditioned dog-house.
[This was originally recorded by Uncle Jud Crowfield and the New Kentucky Travelers in 1965, and was soon covered by Billy Ed Wheeler and Ferlin Husky.] [Is a recording properly called a "cover" if it's sung by the guy who wrote it, but he wasn't the first to record it? In other words, can a singer "cover" his own song?]
JUST AN OLD CATTLE DOG
As recorded by Slim Dusty on "Travellin' Still … Always Will" (2002)
His ears are all tattered; his hide is all battered and worn,
For he's been number one on the cattle run since he was born.
His old eyes light up when he knows there's work to be done,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
Though his old eyes have dimmed as the years have just trimmed him away,
Still he's proud and he's game; he'll be there at the end of the day.
Right there by his side in his footsteps he'll faithfully come,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
He's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run,
But he's long in the tooth now; I reckon his race nearly run.
Ah, but he'll be remembered for many years after he's gone,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
His spirit is strong though his body is tired and old.
He'll still follow the boss through the long days just sharing the load
From the first light of dawn everyday to the set of the sun,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
There's a tree by the homestead where many old mates have been laid,
And the old dog just knows that he'll join them one day in the shade.
He'll be laid down to rest in that Billeroy soil when he's done,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
He's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run,
But he's long in the tooth now; I reckon his race nearly run.
Ah, but he'll be remembered for many years after he's gone,
'Cause he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
Yeah, he's just an old cattle dog out on the Billeroy run.
I heard Michael Cooney sing this song on the radio back in the 80s. I happened to have the tape recorder running and I have been singing it ever since. I call it "Sheepdog". I don't know what Michael calls it.
Such a dreadful thing is life,
She was going to be my wife.
Linda was her name,
I loved her sweet and true.
A week before our wedding day,
My darling gentle fiancé ,
Killed in such and awful way,
Oh, what's a boy to do.
Oh my heart is full of pain,
It's more than I can bear
The honeymoon won't be the same
Without my Linda there.
She was going into town
To pick up here wedding gown.
She was going by the church
In which we were to wed.
When suddenly, I know no why.
When suddenly, I do not lie.
When suddenly a sheepdog fell
And hit her on the head.
They say we should not question why,
That god must have a plan;
But sheepdogs falling from the sky,
I do not understand.
BIG BLACK DOG
As recorded by Emmylou Harris on "Hard Bargain" (2011)
A big black dog
A little too much gray around the muzzle
A big black dog
Why she ended up at the pound is a puzzle
A big black dog
Did she run away
Because somebody didn't treat her right?
Did they leave her out in the cold
Night after lonely night
A big black dog
A big black dog
I found her one day down there at the metro
A big black dog
Waitin' in a cage in line for the death row
Big black dog
Did somebody her put her out on the road
And did just not care?
Did they think an old dog was too much trouble
For them to bear?
A big black dog
Her name is Bella, Bella
You're not brown, you're not yella
Bella, Bella
My big black dog
Big black dogs, they're everywhere
Lookin' for a home, they're hungry and scared
All they need is food and attention
They'll give you back love,
Sometimes redemption I swear
You could find it there
In a big black dog
A big black dog
She may be a little rough around the edges
A big black dog
When you throw a ball, she'll always go and fetch it
This big black dog
With a brand new leash and a brand new collar
It's a brand new game
I love to see the way she runs to me when I holler
Out her name
My big black dog
Her name is Bella, Bella
You're not brown, you're not yella
Bella, Bella
My big black dog
My big black dog
One of my favorite Dog Songs:
Police Dog Blues - Blind Blake
All my life I've been a travelin' man
All my life I've been a travelin' man
Stayin' alone and doin' the best I can
I shipped my trunk down to Tennessee
I shipped my trunk down to Tennessee
Hard to tell about a man like me
I met a gal, I couldn't get her off my mind
I met a gal, I couldn't get her off my mind
She passed me up, said she didn't like my kind
I'm scared to bother around her house at night
I'm scared to bother around her house at night
She got a police dog cravin' for a fight
His name is Rambler, when he gets a chance
His name is Rambler, when he gets a chance
He leaves his mark on everybody's pants
Guess I'll travel, I guess I'll let her be
Guess I'll travel, I guess I'll let her be
Before she sicks her police dog on me
(Sturgill Simpson)
Well, a good dog on the ground's worth three in the saddle, no matter where you're from
Been many good dog was a friend to a man, but Sam was the greatest one
He was hound of hounds
He was the wonder of all walkers
He loved howlin' at the moon
He loved treein' that racoon
Most of all, he was my best friend and he's gone too soon
He was the runt of the litter
But a plenty mean pup
Put Sam on the scent, and he never let up
Spent his nights on the porch, chewin' on a bare bone
Now he's underground, and I'm all alone
Well, a good dog on the ground's worth three in the saddle, no matter where you're from
Been many good dog was a friend to a man, but Sam was the greatest one
Mike fell in love with Henry Lawson's The Cattle Dog's Death and set it to music
The Cattle-Dog’s Death
The Plains lay bare on the homeward route,
And the march was heavy on man and brute;
For the Spirit of Drought was on all the land,
And the white heat danced on the glowing sand.
The best of our cattle-dogs lagged at last,
His strength gave out ere the plains were passed,
And our hearts grew sad when he crept and laid
His languid limbs in the nearest shade.
He saved our lives in the years gone by,
When no one dreamed of the danger nigh,
And the treacherous blacks in the darkness crept
On the silent camp where the drovers slept.
‘The dog is dying,’ a stockman said,
As he knelt and lifted the shaggy head;
‘’Tis a long day’s march ere the run be near,
‘And he’s dying fast; shall we leave him here?’
But the super cried, ‘There’s an answer there!’
As he raised a tuft of the dog’s grey hair;
And, strangely vivid, each man descried
The old spear-mark on the shaggy hide.
We laid a ‘bluey’ and coat across
The camping pack of the lightest horse,
And raised the dog to his deathbed high,
And brought him far ’neath the burning sky.
At the kindly touch of the stockmen rude
His eyes grew human with gratitude;
And though we parched in the heat that fags,
We gave him the last of the water-bags.
The super’s daughter we knew would chide
If we left the dog in the desert wide;
So we brought him far o’er the burning sand
For a parting stroke of her small white hand.
But long ere the station was seen ahead,
His pain was o’er, for the dog was dead
And the folks all knew by our looks of gloom
’Twas a comrade’s corpse that we carried home.
a poem in Scottish Gaelic by Murdo MacFarlane (Murchadh MacPharlain, Bàrd Mealbhoist, 1901-1982), translation by Tom Thompson. I don't know if anyone has set it to music; I suspect not.
An dé thuirt m'athair riumsa
"Bi falbh is bàth an seann chù;
Tha nis an cuilean air fàs mór,
'S tha aon gu leòr bith ann diubh."
Cha do dh'fhalbh mi deònach,
'S ann a dh'fhalbh mi brònach;
An seann chù bochd is e de'n beachd
E bhith dol chun na mòintich.
Do lean e mi gun iarraidh;
Sud chun a chladaich sìor sinn.
O 's dall tha daoine 's coin air cuin
A dh'fhaodas tigh'nn a' chrioch orr'!
Bha'n gnìomh am' shùilean gràineil,
'S an aghaidh mo ghné 's mo chàile;
An seann chù bochd, anns nach robh lochd,
'S mise dol g'a bàthadh.
Nuair a lorg mi dòirneag,
'S nuair a shnaim mi ròp oirr'
Bha sùilean sèimh an t-seann choin bhochd
"Carson tha so?" ri feòrach.
Is math g'eil foluicht' bhuainne
'S gun cheileadh uatsa 's uamsa
An t-àm ri teachd, a sheann chòin bhochd,
No bhiodh ar beatha truagh dheth.
Tha 'm bàs an gné gach beò, 's tha 'd
'Gam breìth le dul mu'n sgòrnan,
Is luath no mall, a sheann choin bhochd,
An dul ud, druidear oirnne.
Ged's fiosraich mis' an dràsda
Air cho dlùth 's tha 'm bàs dhuit,
Tha cheart cho dall mi, sheann choin bhochd,
Air m' àm 's tha thus' an tràth so.
Ach chan eil thus air d'bhuaireadh
Mar tha mis' le smuaintean
Mun am ri teachd, a sheann choin bhochd,
'S cha cheisd taobh thall a h-uaigh dhuit.
No cuid tha 'n t-olc cho làidir,
'S gun saltradh math bho shàil e;
'S carson bhiodh fuath ri toirt na buaidh,
'S ri cur na ruaig air gràdh tric.
Ar bith 's ar beath' gu dearbh tha
Mar gheàrr-réis reult an earbuill
A sgeitheas tiota dubh na h-oidhch',
'N sin shluigeas i gun lorg oirr'.
Mar so bidh tric mi meòrach,
ma 's glic dhomh so na gòrach,
Saoil thus an saor-thoil a bheil feum
Ma tha gach ceum roimh-òrduicht?
No a bheil ann an làmhaibh
Mhic-an-duine air fhàgail
Seadh, falmadair a bheatha féin
Gu stiùireadh far an àill leis?
'N sin sguir mi ris a chòmhradh,
'S chuir an làimh a spòg e ...
Mar gum biodh an seann-chù bochd
A leigeil slàn ri m' bheò leam.
Nuair dhruid mi sìos mu chluasaibh
An dul, 's a theannaich cruaidh e,
Bu chianail sgal an t-seann choin bhochd,
'S 'ga fhreagairt gach creag ghruamach.
'N sin thuirt mi ris gu bàigheil,
"A chaoidh cha bhàth am bàrd thu;
An iochd a phlanndraich Dia am uchd,
Cha dèan cuain a bhàthadh."
'N sin dh'fhàg mi chlach 's an ròp oirr',
'S na tuinn gun iochd shìos foidhpe.
'S e beachd an t-seann choin bhochd a nochd
Gur nighean truais tha 'n tròcair.
Translation
Yesterday my father told me "Go and drown the old dog. The puppy has grown up now, and one of them is enough."
I didn't go willingly, in fact I went sadly. The poor old dog, and him thinking he was going to the hills.
He followed me without question; there we went down to the shore. Oh ignorant are men and dogs about when their end may come upon them.
I saw the deed as loathsome, quite against my nature and my inclination; the poor old dog, which had no fault, and me going to drown it.
When I searched out a stone, and when I tied a rope to it, the gentle eyes of the poor old dog were asking "what's this for?"
It's good that it has been hidden from us, and that it should be concealed from me and from you, the time to come, poor old dog, else our life would be sad for it.
Death is in the nature of all living things, and they are born with nooses round their necks, and sooner or later, poor old dog, that noose, they will pull it tight on us.
Although I am aware now of how close death is to you, I am just as ignorant, poor old dog, of my time as you are just now.
But you haven't been bothering yourself with thoughts, as I have, about the time to come, poor old dog, and you aren't concerned about what's beyond the grave.
Nor about why evil is so powerful that it treads good under its heel; and why should hate win the victories and inflict defeats on love often.
Our existence and our lives are truly like the short courses of shooting stars that briefly interrupt the black of night, which then swallows them up without trace.
Thus I'm often pensive, whether this be wise of me or silly, I wonder if free will has any basis if every step is pre-ordained?
Or whether it is indeed left in the hands of a son of man to steer the rudder of his own life where he would like?
Then I stopped talking, and he put his paw in my hand as if the poor old dog were bidding me farewell for ever.
When I pulled the noose down around his ears, and tightened it hard, the poor old dog's howl was pitiful, echoing from every gloomy rock.
Then I said to him joyfully "The poet will never drown you, the mercy that God planted in my breast, no sea shall drown it."
Then I left the stone with the rope on it, the pitiless waves down below it. Tonight the poor old dog thinks that compassion is the mother of mercy.
