We won a car once but have never managed more than 4 numbers on a lottery ticket. Occasionally win £50 on the premium bonds and £100 once but not quite the same league! |

18 Feb 07 - 02:42 PM (#1971790) Subject: RE: BS: Some Guys Have All The Luck! From: Ebbie Alaska doesn't hold lotteries but Oregon, where I am from, does. I found a good use for lottery tickets down there: On someone's birthday I bought five or ten (depending on how close I was to the person) tickets and gave them. I have no idea how often or whether anyone lucked out but at least it gave them the thrill of anticipation. Hmmmm. I just realized that those were NOT lottery tickets. Lotteries are, indeed, held in Oregon but these were instant-scrape off tickets one bought at machines, either with numbers one entered oneself or let the machine do it. |

18 Feb 07 - 03:06 PM (#1971806) Subject: RE: BS: Some Guys Have All The Luck! From: Bill D well, the lotteries 'can' just be viewed as a way to donate to a charity, or the school system, or whatever they spend the profits on in your area. Then a few win some money....gamble a $ a week and who knows? But they unfortunately are treated by many who can't afford it as a get-rich-quick scheme. |

19 Feb 07 - 01:33 AM (#1972202) Subject: RE: BS: Some Guys Have All The Luck! From: Barry Finn The house always wins. The lotteries are leaglized forms of gambling controls by state agencies after the demize of bookies. Bookies did at one time pay a federal tax but it was never enough & the intent was always to take of that business not to elimate gambling. Bill D is right in his statement above in that it's a get rich-quick scheme that takes advantage of the poorer folk who see it as an only way to better one's life. Alot like addictive drugs or alcohol. It was known to be a sure bet in the poor communities as far back as the roaring 20's when Dutch Shultz took over the "nigger pool" from the Harlem mobsters. They donate is the excused along with they provide some tax relief. Call it what ever you want, it's still gambling & it sucks from the poorer folks. At least the bookmakers gave better odds & didn't tax you back on your winnings. Barry |
