Public ceilidhs are maybe a thing of the past. It now seems difficult to put up posters and get much of an audience for the old P.T.A's etc - a shame. Most of the ceilidh work seems to be at private functions / weddings and has been for many years.

How about the Manchester Ceilidh http://www.manchesterceilidh.co.uk/pages/home.php

From the site -

Every month we welcome over 200 people of all ages to a fantastic evening of music and dancing with a small dose of madness and a large dose of energy.

With two live bands every night and dynamic young callers to lead you through the steps we guarantee you a night to remember that will leave you begging for more. And we won't disappoint because, thanks to your support, we are sticking around.

You've also got the Phoenix Ceilidhs in Horwich:

Or, just the other side of Manchester, there's Poynton Ceilidhs at Poynton Community Centre, Park Lane, Poynton Cheshire - the next one is this Saturday, with Albireo

Clearly you are all talking about Ceilidhs in Britain. However, if you're ever visiting my part of the world - Yellowknife, in Northern Canada - we have a Ceilidh every month. We celebrated out 17th anniversary "House Ceilidh" September 2006.

Unfortunately, we have little space in our house for dancing, but music and storytelling abound.

PTA type Ceilidhs seemed to fade away when car boot sales became popular, organisers thought why organise a hall, food, band, publicity etc when we can get more profit by charging people £5+per car to sell their old rubbish

Try Haddenham,in Buckinghamshire. There"s at least one every month,I think. The venue is large ,with good floor area, and there is a large ,well-staffed bar.The bands / display sides are good-----the last time I went, the band was "Steam Chicken ", with 'Haddenham Hoofers ' Appalachian side giving a fantastic display as well.

Try Webfeet

There are lots. In fact John Heydon (who runs the Haddenham ceilidhs) has suggested there are too many; for example he's in competition with the more recently started Oxfolk and at least one other in that area. People don't necessarily want to go to every monthly ceilidh within range.

I seem to think there's something called "Mumpers" in Derby that does that sort of thing.

I used to go to a barn dance in Keighley once a month, seem to think it was in a big hall next to the swimming pool?

Then there were the Mytholmroyd Dance(r)s.

If you are within driving distance of Coventry, you could do worse than come to the Peeping Tom monthly ceilidh club.

The club has been going for 30 years now (the band are celebrating their 35th birthday this year!!). IT has an unbroken record - every month for 30 years, except August when we go on our hols. Top caller each month, and of course the resident band, Peeping Tom.

We never advertise - it's all by word-of-mouth - and it's pretty much full every month. Must be doing something right!

Dancers are pretty evenly split between the experienced, seasoned ceilidh-goers, and novices. A nice mix, and everyone is made to feel welcome.

It all happens 1st Thursday of every month (except August) at Massey Ferguson Social Club, Broad lane, Coventry. 8.00 - 11.00. Plenty of parking, and sensibly priced drinks. All for a fiver!!

Caller on March 1st is Fee Lock.

You can't beat it.

There's a fab Ceilidh band called 'The Legplaiters' consisting of some leg-ends on the G/Manchester folk scene including caller meastro Mike Canavan, who play every Monday nights at the Oddfellows in Middleton (no dancing there - too small- but fab music and song!.

Gerry, you answered your own question. PTA's raise their money with boot sales because it's easier. I've often wondered what happened to them, but I guess you're right.

But from a band's point of view there seems to be far more work doing birthday parties and weddings that there ever used to be.

Apart from those, we've done:

  • a handful of public ceilidhs and dances for dancers
  • a church festival (twice now)
  • a dance for the Cambridge branch of Amnesty International (also twice) which was great fun especially the second time when loads of youthful and energetic dancers turned up
  • A tennis club Summer party
  • A rugby club party
...er, yes, that's about it as far as I can remember.
The rest is weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. Especially weddings.

Just to update on my previous link, I have now created a link where local Lincolnshire Ceilidh bands can have their info for upcoming public Ceilidhs promoted.

http://www.faldingworthlive.co.uk/ceilidhs.htm

So if some of you Lincolnshire bands have some up and coming gigs, let me know by PM and I will include them on the link.
