Let's write a song together!

19 Feb 07 - 11:04 PM (#1973230)
Subject: Let's write a song together!
From: Jim Lad

Let's write a song together, about the loss of a loved one from Cancer
The tune:... You choose.
Two lines apiece until four verses are completed.
No more than two lines per verse by any individual. (so no "Guest")
A complete work over by all when we're done (With a vote on the final version)
And finally; we each create a chorus (if needed) with a vote on that also.
No royalties attached or donate it to the cause.
Who's game?
First two lines.... (mind the meter)

It barely seems like yesterday,
You held me in your arms.

All very good for a four-line-song. I was aiming for four verses. Let's try and keep this soul alive for at least the first one. Mind your head on the meter!

Start again?
First two lines... By alec Whose next?

It only seems like yesterday,
But twenty years, since then have past

Skipping the bits that don't seem like lines of the song, we have this so far:

It barely seems like yesterday,
You held me in your arms.
A Mothers love for her only son,
Amongst the Devonshire farms.

It only seems like yesterday,
But twenty years, since then have past
Lung cancer took you from us,
A year ago you breathed your last.

But in my memories you remain
A light forever more
Memories stay with us
So I'll always feel you near

sun is now setting, your out of harm

But I remember when you were young
Your future like the sun
I have this massive growth on my nose
Will they save me - no one knows

Ok! Let it die.

They buried you in the churchyard
And with you lies my heart

(we need 2 more lines to rhyme with those - anyone?)

Why cannot anyone stick to the meter, much less the sentiment?

And, by the bye, you're not writing a song, you know -- just a lyric.

Anyway - apologies to Jim Lad for my last contribution yesterday, which was intended as a bit of fun. Jim Lad, don't give up, it's a grand idea. Here are the words so far (below). Jim Lad, as starter of this idea, please edit it to remove any words that don't seem correct, etc., and let's see the result so far.

Jim it's hard to write anything serious as a group because everyone wants to contribute, even if they don't have anything to contribute but throwaway garbage they don't have to put any thought into. At least it's helpful that they self-identify.

Now there are photographs
And a memory, as I turn the page
You're beautiful and perfect
For never will you age
And these thoughts light my heart
Like the stars the heavens above
Everything in this world dies
Everything, but love

But Jim Lad what does it say (I mean that sans crique). Why not story board a theme in some detail then ask for suggestions on metre, pace and lyrics.

I don't write as a general rule so it's all a bit foggy to me but how about :
A Style e.g. Trad, Modern, timeless
A basic theme e.g. a human state or emotion, love, cowardice, fear, hope, desire, hate, compassion.
A location e.g home, away, lost, the sea, a city, a river, a mountain
A start Scene setting, character(s)
A finish e.g. unrequieted, indeterminate, happy, complete, failure, death.

If I may continue take Little Pot Stove (Harry Robertson) he starts the song with
"Where the winter blizzards blow and the whaling fleet's at rest
Tacked in Leith harbour's sheltered bay safely anchored ten abreast"

This sets the style, the location and a situation of temporary safely in just two lines. The next two lines brings some characters and explains what they are doing there.

Writing by committee is uncommon but t'committee need to to know the basics like start, general content, way to go and end.

Give us a storyboard and see if it works.

Spot The Dog: There's a stretch of highway, (a few hundred miles of it) Highway 16 West which runs west of Prince George, BC out to Terrace and then on to Prince Rupert. The route has been named "The Highway of Tears" in recent years due to the mysterious disappearance of many young women, most of them Aboriginals.
I would be very interested in seeing how some of us would handle this particular topic. From the families' points of view or the girl herself. Alone in the wilderness. Her fate unknown. Wouldn't really touch on what's probably happened to her. The fact that they're Aboriginals is thought by many to be the main reason that these losses could go on for so long, without any kind of intervention by the R.C.M.P.
Now, I know this road very well and would be inclined to stay out of the actual writing but could certainly help out with the geography. (although it probably wouldn't be necessary)
Would that be something we could get our teeth into?
Search.... "Highway of Tears, Highway 16, BC, Canada" and I have no doubt that you'll find something.
When one of you is ready, start a new thread "Highway of Tears" and go about building the song in whichever way you choose. (two lines at a time didn't work)

Well thanks for that. How do you know I didn't put any thought into my contribution? Evidently it was 'throwaway garbage' because it was thrown away, but that doesn't mean I didn't think about it. It might just mean I'm not able to write stuff as well as you.

I wouldn't say flawed Jim Lad, in three days you have a song that just needs a tune and possibly a refrain. At the risk of getting cut up I would suggest that Swallow is substituted for Sparrow and walking on broken glass I would re-arrange the first line of the last verse to read "So now I'll say goodbye ,my love" (dunno why)

I like the idea of Highway of Tears, I will look on the net as you recommend.

Jim lad,

There is already a CD out with two songs on it performed by Ray Bessette and co-authored by Ray and Brent Brekkaas. One song called "Please Come Home" and the other the title "Highway of Tears". Ray provided all the recording and distribution costs with proceeds going to signage along the highway
It's a heartbreaking story and beyond my comprehension to even know where to start.

Ouch! In my mind the bugger was already gone but that works too!

Spot the dog: Re "Highway of Tears" Whatever you do, don't look at the other songs. (there's probably a bunch of them by now)

The big flaw that I see is that many contributions are being ignored and I'm the biggest culprit. There has to be a way around this. Perhaps one of you comes up with a piece of work and mails it to other individuals. We post it now and then for more input. Something like that. Georgian Silver, Scrump, Chris or one of the others could co-ordinate it. My mother says I don't work well with others.

It barely seems like yesterday
You held me by the hand
We walked along the seashore
kicked our shoes off in the sand
Then up along the riverbank
and to the shady glen
I'd part with all I own
Just to have yesterday again.

Ah but that was in the springtime
When the air was fresh and clear
We never had a worry
Never shed a single tear
But now my heart grows heavy
As I ponder back to then
Won't somebody please show me
The way to yesterday again

Well the summers nearly over
And the nights are closing in
The sparrow long since left her nest
The geese are on the wing
And all the joys we ever had
We'll never share again
But please God above can I
Just have one yesterday again

So now I'll say goodbye my love
But as you slip away
Please know my heart is aching
Just to make it through the day
And though now we may be parted
Still I pray that in the end
When I've reached my last tomorrow
We'll share yesterday again

I suggest now that the lyrics are done and all we need is a real musician to turn it into a song.
