Lyr Req: If I was a whale in the sea

I am looking for the proper words and artist for a ditty that goes something like this:
If I was a whale in the sea,
If I was a whale in the deep blue sea
with no mother or father to play with me
I'd feel so sad and I'd be so mad
If I was a whale in the sea.
I think that it was Country Joe or something like that, but I can't locate it. Thanks, on behalf of my first graders. Lucius

Thanks Peace, but it looks like I'm flogging a dead horse on this search. BTW, when I first posted, my message had no breaks, at least none to be seen on my computer. Subsequently, on checking in, it seems that the grammar fairies cleaned it up and made nice indentations for the lyrics. Was I looking at junk from my cache, or is it possible to clean up a post?

Lucius, I have been able to find nowt that corresponds with the lyrics you've posted. I changed whale and used fish also. That led to a few things, but none were similar enough to what you have posted as lyrics. I will continue to look, but I ain't holding my breath. Sorry.. But please let's keep this refreshed for a few days and maybe one of the big guys will look into it.

If I were a whale in the sea- correction from the grammar police! Warning ticket only this time-
Lucius, your first graders should recycle you to old 'teach' Blunderbutt for retraining.

If I were a whale, wow, I
would be
The largest creature in the sea.
As I glide by I could
expect
To get a whole bunch of
respect.
I'd blow some water from
my spout
And NEVER eat a Brussels
sprout!

Same sort of doggerel. I didn't go any more deeply into Google.

Sorry Q, but I have to stick by the grammar. As mournful as the melody is, the quality is not unlike “Can’t get no satisfaction” or “ain’t no bugs on me” and I don’t feel inclined to change them either. I’m even more sorry that I can’t figure out this HTML thing. If I could, that the following lyrics wouldn’t be smashed together, as is typical of my posts.

If I was a whale in the sea,
If I was a whale in the deep blue sea
with no mother or father to play with me
I'd feel so sad and I'd be so mad
If I was a whale in the sea.

If I was a whale in the sea,
If I was a whale in the deep blue sea
and the whaling people come to harpoon me
I'd feel so sad and I'd be so mad
If I was a whale in the sea.

If I was a whale in the sea,
If I was a whale in the deep blue sea
and the save the whale people come to try and save me
I'd be so happy and I'd be so glad
If I was a whale in the sea.

Lyrics to Country Joe McDonald's song SAVE THE WHALES, have been posted in another thread, along with discographical information (click the link). Is that the one you had in mind, Ben? Its lyrics don't match those that Lucius quoted.

Country Joe's web site also mentions a song called LITTLE BLUE WHALE, but it gives no lyrics. Allmusic.com says it was on an album called "Goodbye Blues" (1994).

Also, Ben, when you said "it is by Joe Cocker"—I assume that was a mistake and you meant to say "Joe McDonald." I think the album you were referring to must be McDonald's "Into the Fray" because it contains both COYOTE and SAVE THE WHALES.

But anyway, I'm pretty sure it's not the song Lucius wanted.

I was listening to the story of the dead whale in Newfoundland on he BBC -- retransmitted via NPR -- and they played a few lines of the song. They should know where they found the recording, and who recorded it.
