curmudgeon, I was playing in Boston in the late 60's.....often at turk's head and the sword in stone....from your post about 60's folk singers, it would seem that we have a lot of friends in common. I've been in touch with some of the people on your list....who are you? and do you know where "jingles" is?

I knew some of them folks ... I was through there a bit later ... played the Idler and Jonathan Swifts ... and a bunch of pub and coffeehouse venues in Central MA.

I've been trying to find an old friend from the area - a harmonica player. Worked with Jaime Brockett, and some of the later Orpheus folks ... John Lee Hooker and others too. Sound familiar? And Michael, if you're from Amherst you may know my friend Kevin.

Who is Kevin?.....don't know if I know him, but I'd be willing to look him up....was the harp player "Rocky".....otherwise known as Mark Rockwood?....he worked with Jaime, as well as Paul MacNeil, The Great Metropolitan Steam Band, etc.....if it's him, he's up in Cow Hampshire....

No Burke. Kevin Burke - listed himself KP Burke on the albums. Last I heard he was in RI near Jamestown. I don't suppose he's playin, these days .... I know he knew Steve Martin, hence the Orpheus connection. I believe he worked more with Hooker and some of the Chicago folks, then the New Englanders. I knew him briefly in the 70's when I starting out. Good guy, great player.

He might have played with Clean Living....if so, we've met....I'll ask some of the Clean Living alums when I next see them...in fact, their former manager lives up the street from me...

Thanks - yes, I am certain Kevin played with them, at least on the album/s.

Jaime mentions a harp player on the back of Remember the Wind and the Rain ... Rocky. If that's him, I know where he is, as does curmudgeon.

I just asked the resident Clean Liver in our house (husband Frank) who says that Kevin Burke was a friend of Elliot's, the keyboard player. Kevin played on the first album and a few gigs. When Elliot left the band, Jeff Potter, who played both keyboard and harmonica, replaced them both. Frank doesn't know what became of Kevin.

Yes - I know that Elliot and Kevin were good friends. And I thought Kevin played on Jaime's first album, too ...

If Frank or Elliot have any contact info for Kevin, I'd appreciate a PM with the details.

Frank and I are in a local bluegrass band called ShoreGrass. He plays banjo (I'm president of the Banjo Wife Support Group) and we spend most weekends of the warm months as festivarians, going from one festival to another, one jam to another! We are currently working on a new album of original material. Yep, still playing a lot!

Wow - small world, Barbara! I just sent a "friends" request from Myspace and from my Civil War Music pages to you.

I'll need to get my wife info about your Banjo Wife Support Group! A few years ago I bought a lovely long-neck Vega banjo, made by Deering. I was in the kitchen playing with my new toy, and my wife on the other side of the house, knitting. After a while she poked her head into the kitchen and said, "Are you going to play that banjo for another hour?"

And she loves banjo - but I guess it has its limits!

The best thing I ever did regarding banjo was to buy one of Rick Fielding's banjo mutes. Maybe Heather still has some. It makes the beast sound like a soft Dobro. Not that Frank uses it very often...

Thanks for the friends requests! I'm having fun with this myspace thing. Our number one friend (number 2 son) is currently touring with a rock band called The Broken West (also a friend), and in fact they were in Dallas last night. He's playing keyboard with them and trumpet with the headliners later in the tour. And to think I wanted him to be a rocket scientist when he grew up. Still time, I guess, if they still have rockets then.

Lots of crossed paths here, but often at different times.

I left Boston in June of 1969 for southern parts (don't ask!) When I returned a year later the great folk diaspora was almost complete. Chris Smither, Paul Geremia and Bill Staines had gone on the road to greater fame. Most of the rest headed north to Plum Island and Newburyport and I had gone back to NH. I did a couple gigs at the Turks Head that summer, but that was the last time I played on Charles Street.

The old gang was semi rconstituted at the Stone Church which opened in Dec. of 1970. I think that kenny Girard was the last to leave Boston.

The only member of Clean Living I knew was Norn Schell, but I did enjoy their rendition of "In Heave There Is No Beer" and the only recording of my friend Alan Rotman's gospel song "Jesus Is My Subway Line"

Good memories - Tom

Tom.....I heard from Norm Schell that Alan Rotman had died some time ago....I have great memories of Alan. He and I worked together a bit in '69...Alan found it easier to get bookings for a singer and a comedian than it was to book just a comic, and I was more than happy for the work..I have a great photo of Alan and Bill Madison on the Boston Common in '68....Bill playing a beautiful J-200...Still looking for Jingles...every now and then I watch the crowd scene at the end of Nashville and there he is...he had worked as a stand in and got his face on screen at the movie's end..do you h appen to know Tony Robino and where he might be today?...

If Bill was playing a J-200, it wasn't his; he played a beautiful Martin D-21. The only J-200 folks I remember were Paul Geremia and Rocky. That may have been the Gibson Rocky acquired in a quick series of bizarre trades.

Alan was one of the funnest people I've ever known. He decided to go into comedy when he realised that he wasn't going to make it as a folksinger - Tom

Sorry to drop out so ungraciously ... but that is not the Kevin Burke I was looking for, Charley.

These folks mentioned are a bit before my time. I played with Bill a time or two along the way, mostly in recent years. My friend Kevin knew Norm, Elliot, Jaime Brockett and Tony Rubino ... I heard the names, but never met these guys.

Still like to hear from someone who might know where I can find Kevin.
