The archives of the Waterford News & Star say that KILMACTHOMAS GIRL is one of the songs on John "The Miller" Power's recent CD "Sweet Tramore."

THE KILMACTHOMAS GIRL.

1. Oh, on my rambles here and there,
There were tall ones and small ones; sure you'll find them everywhere.
But of all the pretty girls I've met, from the mountains to the sea,
Sure the Kilmacthomas Girl is the one that pleases me.

CHORUS: She is as fine a girl as you could wish to see,
I'd marry her this minute if she only would agree,
How I wish that I could coax her down to Caheroon with me,
For the Kilmacthomas Girl is the best of quality.

2. Now I'm losing every job I get, for work I'm not inclined,
Sure 'tis hard for me to work at all, there's so much on my mind,
Now I'm planning how to get her, so I'll have enough to do,
And sure if she says she'll marry me, well I'll work as good as two.

3. Now when I go to bed at night sure I cannot sleep a wink,
And I know you won't believe me when I tell you what I think,
And sure when I'm tired of thinking, I'd go down into the glen,
Oh I'd stand outside her window and go back to bed again.

4. Well tonight I'm going to meet her and I'll tell her straight and plain,
And behold if she refuses me, well I'll never stand the strain,
But behold if she refuses me and sure if I still survive,
Well I'll join the monks in Mellory for as long as I'm alive.

Hi
The Kilmacthomas Girl was written by my Grandfather John Barry from Caheruain,Kill,Co Waterford. He wrote it for my Grandmother when he met her. I am impressed it lasted this long, my mum was born in 1916 so it must have been written long before that.

I'd almost given up hope of getting this song, so thanks to Jim Dixon for supplying! And isn't it great to know the history of it as well. Thanks to Sadie Power for sharing.. any relation of Johnny's?

If anyone is still checking this message board for this song, you will definitely want to visit the Facebook page called Singing Session Videos. On October 14, 2023, the page owner started listing videos from the 2023 Garry McMahon Traditional Singing Weekend. The 6th video he loads for that day is a young boy named Dara who sings this particular song beautifully. It is a real treat! I tried to see if I could find Sadie Power (above) who stated that her grandfather wrote it so I could contact her directly, but then I quickly saw that there were MANY Sadie Power profiles online. Hope you all enjoy this video and the many others of beautiful songs from that weekend. I have been enjoying them for many days now!

Singing Session Videos is this the correct Facebook group? The name appears in several different contexts (I searched for the Garry McMahon weekend to land on this one.)

The link won't open on my phone, probably due to cookie/blocking settings I use.
