I love the way the Dead did these traditional and other tunes, Dire Wolf, Rose Lee Mcfall, Jack A Roe - China Doll, how do mudcatters feel about this dead album and its severely folk and traditional sound?

This is their best album, at least for folkies. A "must have", right along with Doc Watson's first solo effort "Doc Watson", Dave Van Ronk's "Folksinger", Eric Von Schmidt's "The Folk Blues of...", etc.

I like it a lot.

I was fortunate to see one of these acoustic sets, in 1981 I believe, at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans. We walked into the theater and there was a white grand piano at center stage. We went "What's this?"

Was blown away when they came out and did the acoustic set, Phil Lesh's bass being the only electric instrument. They played for an hour, then took a break and returned to play a whole regulation 2-set electric show. We were in the place for almost six hours.

Cheers,
Michael

I too love this album. I love the songs, the sound of the band, and of course Garcia's great acoustic guitar playing.

This album is a masterwork - They were doing and unplugged set years before MTV made it a trendy thin to do!
