Pulmonary embolism (P.E.) is no joke. but at least it was not a heart attack. or a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. i was admitted to the hospital and put on blood thinners. luckily there is wireless internet here and my daughter has loaned me her lap top so i can check e-mail and mudcat! to have to be here for a week without access to the internet, mudcat and e-mail would be a real tragedy!! i am listening to NPR radio via the net,.\ that beats being at the mercy of the network television stations! i was supposed to join my friend buckwheat bob at several gigs -- today i am missing the first one--i progress now. I hope they can find the reason such as a Factor 5 problem or something as it makes it easier over the long haul. They have never been able to isolate the problem that caused Karen's P.E. and subsequent clots but she does her warfarin/coumadin and things are great. K levels go down with heat...and cooking may destroy it...if i am correct ...any opinions on this? |

THe amount varies with the individual, their condition, weight and other things but what becomes very important is diet. The Coumadin clinics and other monitoring specialists will try to get you away from some things and blah, blah......What is important is that whatever you eat, you're consistent! Green leafy stuff contains Vitamin K and K kills the effect of the coumadin. If you're a real veggie nut than cutting back may be in order a it since you want to try not to have too high a daily dose of coumadin. Karen and I both eat veggies like Sprouts and cauliflower and broccoli and spinach which are major coumadin killers but we limit the times per week and the serving size to try to be about the same amount every week......consistency! The same is true with cranberries, papaya, grapefruit, and other things which ENHANCE the effect of the coumadin. You can still eat about whatever you want but eat it consistently! You'll get to know all about the numbers especially one called pro-time number which gauges the time it takes blood to clot. Normal clotting blood is around 1.0 to 1.3 or thereabouts. Your doctors will figure a level based on your condition that they want to establish as your number. Karen and other P.E. patients are generally about 2.5 although some Docs vary that. In my case with the heart valve, mine is best kept a bit thinner at 3.0-3.4. To maintain that with a consistent diet I take 7.5mg every day but Sunday and Wednesday when I take a 3mg. Karen weighs less and maintains a lower number but she requires a 7.5 daily.......we're all different. Adjuisting to the proper level can be frustrating at times but its no big deal. What is a big deal is that you need to get yourself a MED ID something or another so if you're injured the folks working on you will know you take blood thinners! There is plenty of info a lot better than this on the net and I am sure your Docs will give you reading material as well. Don't be freaked over it......it beats the alternative! Spaw |

02 Mar 07 - 09:49 PM (#1984551) Subject: RE: BS: open mike in hospital From: open mike got any good doctor jokes?? or nurse jokes? i have a portable heart monitor thingy telemetry.....sounds like something from star trek.. beam me up... and i just had a nurse-type person run in to check to see if i am still alive -- one of the wires came loose from the lead. luckily i could give her a positive report on my status... not dead.....yet...... although i sort of wished i was when every breath was so painful. the stickers that hold the clips to the wires never come off though...there are some stuck to the bed nd they will not peel off no matter what...the stickers last thru showers and everything... gosh i wish the lady down the hall was not moaning and wailing. sometimes she ramps up into an operatic pitch.. sorry if that offends any opera fans out there. she gives opera a bad name!! well, i got my mandolin delivered today so maybe i can echo back with some noise of my own!! |

I do not like taking it, but it beats the chances of the alternative.:-) I found the more I exercised the lower the dosage which flies in the face of their studies, according to the people at the coumadin clinic I go to, but my doc says he thinks it's because my body is using it more efficiently which works for me! My protime has to be between 2.0-3.0. It may take them some time to get your dosages correct. I have finally had my first three months with a steady "read" and so have a set dosage, 7.5 each day except Friday when I only take 5.0. They are supposed to be developing new drugs for this. Last I heard over in the UK, but who knows? Anyway...you've got the right attitude and I know you are getting better. Just don't come outta there like a horse in a race okay? Take it a little slow and easy. After a week of being in hospital, everything may be a little slow on the uptake and you'll need to be patient with yourself.*smile* luvyakat |

It must be a pretty good hospital to recognize a pulmonary embolism so quickly. You are very lucky. You've also gotten very good advice in this thread. I'm sure you can request to talk to the dieticians before you leave the hospital for guidelines as well as your pharmacist and doctors about interactions and foods. Write down any questions you might have as they arise or you may forget them. Realize you may bleed easier so avoid risky behavior, too. No vigorous teeth brushing, etc. Don't worry, though, you'll adjust. You are very lucky! Best wishes. |

Smith in the genetics department had been trying to breed a strain of clover free of the factor's precursor for several years, and efforts to isolate it were underway in Link's laboratory. But Link was an emotional man and, for him, the story of Warfarin really began with Ed Carlson's visit. The first paper describing the concentration of the hemorrhagic factor appeared in the October, 1940, issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. "It was a modest paper," Link recalled. "My rule is, never overstate your case in print. It's better to understate it and let the facts speak for themselves." In successive papers the facts did so eloquently. In 1941, Link and Harold Campbell reported the isolation of dicumarol, the first of the oral anticoagulants now widely used in surgery and the treatment of circulatory disorders. At the same time, Link was becoming convinced that the anticoagulants being isolated and synthesized in this laboratory might also be useful as rodenticides. "From the beginning," he said, "I had an intuitive feeling that this might be a good thing. A pretty bad thing for rats, but a good thing for humans. But the idea didn't come overnight. It came into my head and the heads of everyone in the lab over a period of years." Again, the accumulating facts spoke for themselves, and in 1948 Link came to WARF's director Ward Ross with the suggestion that the foundation patent, as a rodenticide, the coumarin derivative he later named Warfarin. Why did Link turn over his patents to WARF? "Well, they couldn't have been developed without the foundation," he said. "I couldn't have done it myself and I never thought of trying." "And I'm a loyal Wisconsin man," he added. "After all, I went to school here. I came in as a freshman in 1917 and I got all my degrees here. This was discovered by rat catchers, when it turned out it wasn't doing the job, and it turned out the ratsgot smart and found a way of curing themselves against warfarin. Mice were a bit slower on the uptake however. This could of course be urban legend bandied around by the rat catchers, but the basis works - vit K is to be avoided. Glad you're on the mend Laurel.
