Greg sings a wide variety of styles tht first song, Canned Goods is a wonderful one. Many of his songs feature rural life, family, and fishing. His shows almost always sell out. He has been on Prairie Home Companion for many years and has introduced audiences to many other great musicians by having others tour with him and open for him. These others were Garnet Rogers, Kelly Joe Phelps, Kate Campbell, Bo Ramsey, Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzmann, and others. One of the charities he has worked with is an Oregon project which combines a senior housing with an orphanage. |

He was part of the family at The Folkway, where I got to know him. He's written some good songs, including "Early"... OK, if I'd have known the songs beforhand, I'd probably hear him differently, but he seems to have reduced the language to a series of groans. Sorry, not my cup o'tea. |

I noted that his audience was composed almost equally of men and women. Usually there are more women at SS concerts and some other venues I go to. I can see what people mean about him mumbling on these links, though. It's like listening to someone with an accent: the longer i listen, the easier he is to understand. On Youtube I usually prefer videos that show the singer performing. However, in his case I thought he was easier to understand on videos that just showed a CD cover or other still photo. |

The story was that he worked with Buck Ram of the Platters, and he was really into rock, more than folk. Then, he was the in-house guy on PHC, and did a great variety of material. About '86 or so, we booked him for a concert in San Diego and he was great. But, moving into this century, I agree, I can't understand what he is saying. Is this some kind of 'boomer thing' or returning to his '70's Bo Diddley/Clapton thing? Whatever, I'd sure like to see one duet cd with Iris or maybe with the daughters. Best song IMHO - his recording of Rooty Toot Toot! A man of great lyrics and great grooves. Chris ps - Early is Early,Iowa,from when Greg was touring on a state grant. Love singing that. |

He tends to experiment with (some of) his songs over time, he's not one of those people who sound exactly like their recordings. I'm not a fan of that procedure but hey he's an arteest. Maybe this is where the so-called mumbling slips in, though I've never noticed it myself. I think the sound quality is probably pretty poor on cell phone youtube clips. ;-) If I could sing like anyone it would be like Greg, but I'd have to swallow a couple of 100 gallon barrels to sound like him. |
