Tech: WinWord error

Arrgh! Now my Word program has stopped working! I get the following error message:

Required registry information is missing and this application cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem.

How the heck does one "rerun setup"? (I use Windows 98 SE.)

Any help urgently appreciated, as I'm dead in the water without word processing.

Cheers,
Michael

What version of Word are you using? Is it part of Office Suite and do the other programs start up and work okay? Have you recently updated anything through the Microsoft site? Chances are that their lack of support of the older systems is catching up to you, but it shouldn't grind to a halt.

In older systems I used to every so often reinstall my operating system to clean up problems it developed over time. This also means reinstalling updates. I think you can get the old ones from Microsoft but (and John in Kansas will tell you for sure) I think they stopped supporting Win98 a couple of years ago, and Win2000 is also on the block. So what's out there as far as fixes for old problems are all you're going to get.

Good luck.

Chances are your registry is corrupted. Do what the message tells you, and re-install Word (not your OS).

Word can be reinstalled, and I should have made that clear also, but what I said still stands. It doesn't hurt and sometimes helps to reinstall your OS in those older versions of Windows.

BTW michaelr

- re old 98SE 'updates' - I found them on the web in an 'unofficial' 17 Mb dnld - and I had no hassle reinstalling first 98SE from CD and then the updates right over the top of the existing OS - see the Bit Rot Hassles thread

Don't forget to Download Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 also

Actually, I've had a difficult time finding much information about what's still available for Win98. When one visits the update sites, where the information should be, the site looks at what you have installed before it finishes letting you in, and then it "resists" telling you anything not related to what you're running. As I don't have a Win98 system running any longer, I can't get in as a Win98 user.

There are a few other places where some information is "findable" but most of it is pretty vague. If you have Win98, you can go to the Windows Update page at Microsoft and they should tell you - but they don't seem to want to tell me.

I do have an old laptop with Win95 on it (memory chips discontinued and it can't load even Win98 with what's installed); but if I take it to Microsoft they'll probably just giggle and make fun of me.

If you are still using Win98SE, I'd strongly urge that you try to download the update package and save it with your Win98 Installation disk(s), in case you need to reinstall sometime in the future.

Anyone using WinXP that didn't get SP2 with the original installation should also IMMEDIATELY order the free SP2 update CD from Microsoft and put it with their WinXP installation/recovery disk, if you don't already have it there.

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that they stopped supporting Win98 a little over a decade ago, but ...

If you insert your Word (or Office) installation disk, it should open the "Installation Wizard" automatically. If it doesn't you can look on the install disk (or first floppy if it's really old) for a "setup.exe" file or something similar and double-click it.

You should also be able to go into Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs (or something similar) and click on Word, then follow instructions. You may or may not need the Word/Office installation disk when you do it through Control Panel, depending on whether the installation .CAB files are on your drive.

The usual instructions about backing up before making changes apply, of course, but installing Word shouldn't overwrite or remove any .doc files. It may give you a new normal.dot, which is the "empty document" template that opens for new documents, and that contains all your macros, styles, etc - assuming you've created any. If there's any question, you can search for *.dot and copy any that you find somewhere else before you do the reinstall of Word.

If there are any problems with the installation, you might need to use Control Panel to uninstall Word1 and then use the installation disks to re-install it. A little more care with backup of your .doc files before doing the uninstall step might be in order, if any of them are in the program folder(s).

1 In some cases of incredibly profound corruption, the last resort is to install a program so that you'll be able to uninstall it (using Control Panel), after which you can get a clean install; but I've never heard of this bad a situation with Word or other Office programs.

When an Office module 'breaks', I've found the only reliable way to mend it is to uninstall it, then reinstall (remembering to set it to run off the PC and not the CD).

I've seen this sort of thing happen regularly with Millennium Edition, and the only 'repair' is reinstalling the OS. Win98(SE) is usually more forgiving in that respect.

The best repair is to get rid of Millenium Edition. That was a piece of crap from beginning to end. I ran a dual platform when my computer came with that because I didn't want to buy new software drivers for some of the peripherals. HP finally put out new drivers so I could update it to Win2000Pro and completely get rid of ME. I've used XP Pro for a couple of years now, and will leave it in place till I hear enough good things about the new OS that I consider it worthwhile to switch.

WinME must be the worst OS ever written... it was sort of halfway between Win98 and XP, and seemed to be a dumping ground for every routine they couldn't get right!

Win200Pro had too many memory leaks for my liking... especially the Small Business Server version with Microsoft Exchange.

Server 2003 with XP Pro workstations seems quite stable. Outlook 2003 looked a bit messy at first, but is quite good when you get used to where they hid everything!!

We work with 'Blue Chip Companies', so our AV laptops have to run Windoze with recent versions of Office, etc., so the poor dears can run their beloved PowerPoint presentations - so our office workstations are somewhat constrained, too.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2000, and everything appears to be OK.
