Lyr Req: songs by Lonnie Donegan

Subject: Lyr Req: Lonnie Lyrics
From: Roger the Skiffler

Mudcatter Biloute12003 is looking for some Lonnie D lyrics: I'm going to see if I have them but here's a chance to beat me to it!
I'm French and have some understanding with Lonnie drawl.
I'm searching for Lonnie's lyrics
LORELEI
TIT-BITS
MARKET SONG

I probably have Lorelei somewhere, Claude, but I'm not sure about Tit-bits or Market Song but I'msure some Mudcatter will have them.

I'll have to look in the archives. Titbits and Market Song are eluding my failing memory at the moment. I think I have Max Miller on a tape somewhere singing a song called Titbits, it's the same one.

IIRC the Lonnie Donegan version of both those songs (Tit Bits and Market Song) were recorded with Max Miller.

Well I've just listened to Titbits, and frankly some of the activities referred to are illegal. That Max Miller, eh.

From: Roger the Skiffler

This is Leiber & Stoller's Lorelei transcribed from Lonnie's recording. It is very fast so I'm not surprised Claude had problems, I had to listen to it in bits:

LORELEI
(Leiber & Stoller)

I kissed a girl in Burma, in a town they called Rangoon
Her lips were hot as curry in the heat of the afternoon
Her kisses were so spicy I thought my lips would fry
(CHORUS:) But I never knew what kissing was till I kissed Lorelei
Loerelei,Lorelei, Lorelei.

I kissed a girl in Africa, I only had a hope [?]
And every time I kissed her my ears would turn to soap
She kissed me oceans deeply and she kissed me mountains high
But... (CHORUS)

I kissed a girl in London town, right underneath Big Ben
And as our lips were touching the clock was striking ten
She kissed me there in April and it lasted till July
But...(CHORUS)

I kissed a girl in the Holy Land in the Sea of Galilee
She fed me dates and olives underneath a lemon tree
She kissed me till my sunburnt lips were parched and dry
But...(CHORUS)

You think that I'm just lying and you think she don't exist
But if she kissed you boy you'd know that you'd been kissed
For kissing is her speciality, her one and only dish
For Lorelei's a mermaid, half a woman, half a fish
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei.

I've not found the 2 Max Miller songs on any of the lyrics sites I usually use, only a couple of requests for them (including Claude's).Greg if they are too risque for the sensitive Mucatters'ears you better pm them to Claude!

They are not that risque, though the paedophilic homosexuality verse might be not very PC these days. I will try to transcribe them this evening. There are one or two lines I cant get, I'll do what I can.

Tut, tut - Max Miller not being PC? Whatever next?! :-)

From: Scrump

Not sure why, but the Lorelei lyrics reminded me of this:

MOVING ON

Chorus
Here I stand at the railroad track,
The memory of her, it keeps calling me back.
And hoo-ee goes that old freight train,
Telling me I should be moving on again, and on.

I went to rent a lady's house, she handed me the key,
She said, "It's to be let like this with all that you can see."
"And are you to be let with the house?" said I in a most expectant tone,
She said, "I'm not be let with the house, I'm to be let alone." So,

[chorus]

I met a rich old widow, she was 85 years old,
But coming from a dance one night she caught a nasty cold.
We rubbed her back with whiskey to try and cure her cough,
And then she went and broke her neck trying to lick it off. So,

[chorus]

I took my friend, McTavish, to Rosie's house for tea,
She said, "What's that thing on your lap just above your knee?"
He said, "Oh that's my sporran, ma'am," she said, "Well goodness sake,
For two whole hours I've been trying to feed it chocolate cake."

[chorus]

All my lonely nights are over now that I've met Claire,
She's the fat tattooed lady from the local fair.
But since I have been wed to her a paradise I've found,
I've got heat in the winter and shade in the summer and pictures all year 'round.

No more will I stand at the railroad track,
With the memory of her a-calling me back.
And hoo-ee can go that old freight train,
But I'm never moving on again.

Alas, I've transcribed the Market Song, but ntl has tuerned off the cabletv internet access which is what I use. So I've just popped into the library to keep up to date with correspondence. I've now ordered a computer, something I'd set my face against, but I'll have to now. It's coming on Tuesday, that's exciting. I've never had one before.
If I have time tomorrow, I'll type the stuff out here at the library if there's a computer spare.

"Lorelei" is *almost* right. The second verse begins:

I kissed a girl in Africa right on the Ivory Coast
And every time she kissed me back my ears would burn like toast
