Cool Comparison

I just came across this review:

"New Music! We now carry CD's and cassettes by Kathy Reid-Naiman and Debbie Carroll. Not since I first heard Jean Ritchie in the 1970's have I been so excited by children's music as I am by this! Enjoy!"
Pat Gallagher (B.C.Playthings)

That's awesome. I'm stunned.

For sure, Jeff...it's really nice to be included in such great company. Kathy R-N is a good friend of mine, and if it weren't for her, I wouldn't have even done the recordings. Ken Whiteley is our producer, a genius and top-of-the-ladder musician himself. He is a real gem, and deserves a few gold medals for what he's done for children's music in Canada. I record for Kathy's Merriweather Records, which promotes high quality folk-based music for young children. So I tip my hat to both of them.
As for Gallaher's mention of Kytrad, I think it speaks to the volume of kids' music out there that is pop-based and tends to all start sounding very much the same. When music comes on the scene that is rootsy and authentic and rich with instrumentation and tradition, it's refreshing. It's also a statement about the lyrics, I think. A lot of recent children's music has been didactic in orientation, whereas folkie material tends to be more descriptive, poetic, artful as a rule.
I wonder if there is any relationship here to Bill Gallaher?

Congrats, bw - I'll be passing the info on to my favourite childcare centres.
