10 Mar 07 - 12:42 PM (#1992648) Subject: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: Amos A reminder that at 2AM tonight the clocks of the United States are supposed to be set forward one hour. This is the first year it has been done on this date, rather than some other legislated date, and it is causing all sorts of kafluffle in Windows networks, and perhaps others, to reset correctly. Happy Daylight Savings, y'all! A |

10 Mar 07 - 03:27 PM (#1992809) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: JohnInKansas WinXP users can get their DST flip dates reset at the download sites, but when I got it it was an "optional" update and wasn't being downloaded automatically. You had to click "Custom Install" at the site, and pick out the appropriate change. There may have been similar updates for other supported versions. For those who don't find an automatic program, you'll probably have a change schedule of some kind, so after you manually reset your clock tonight, when the "regular" date comes up next month you'll probably have to manually reset it again. Being down here in upside down world (Oz), we've been enjoying it since the 29th October last year, and it finishes in a couple of weeks on the 25th March, unfortunately :-( Looks like I'll have to adjust my calculations twice, when working out the difference between our time and Mudcat time. At the moment we are 16 hours ahead of you, for the next two weeks it will be 15 hours, then after the 25th it will be 14 hours. Ouch, my head hurts! |

But I have a cuckoo clock and I need to know if this is gonna screw up the bird. Serious answers for once. This is NOT a laughing matter. If I'm gonna have a fu#ked up cuckoo bird because of this change thing, it ain't gonna happen. The bird and I go back a long way, and I don't need it gettin' all outta sorts at 2:23 AM squacking that he's pissed off about having his routine messed with. If there's a chance of that, then it will remain 2008 and that's that. |
|
11 Mar 07 - 01:50 AM (#1993188) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: JohnInKansas Peace - Cuckoos are nice little birds, but not too bright. If you just walk past at about 01:45 and cuckoo twice, at 02:00 the cuckoo will think that 02:00 has already come and passed, so if the cuckoo has minimal cleverness (normal for cuckoos) it should automatically/reflexively cuckoo three times, and will remain on the adjusted time schedule thereafter. It's much more difficult when the change is in the other direction, since you must prevent the cuckoo from hearing one time, so that it will repeat the same number of cucks at the following hour. If this doesn't work, I can assure you that the only reason would be that instead of an accurate "cuckoo" you must have "dodo'd" and should look for the mess and clean it up. John |

(if in pacific time, tell it you are in mountain, etc.) i am going to experment and see if the cellphone sets itself' a couple of months ago when i was in nevada...pacific time....it kept setting itself ahead 2 hours in central time..i think this was due to a huge antennae system outside the place i was staying....a tower of communication antennaes, satellite dishes and other sources of various types of waves. |

I set my clocks back, and saved an hour of daylight, but then I just used it at the other end of the day, so I ended up with only the same amount of daylight I would've had if I'd have left the clocks alone. As usual, they give with one hand, and take away with the other. |

12 Mar 07 - 10:37 AM (#1994357) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: Amos Scrump: If you set your clocks back, you may be dyschronic, as this is the season for Springing forward. The only way to make an extra hour of daylight occur at the end of the day is to set your clock ahead so the day starts earlier in the physical rotation of the planet and is still enjoying sunlight later on, with sundown (around here) now being at 7 instead of around 6. 12 Mar 07 - 10:47 AM (#1994377) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: McGrath of Harlow "It's Saturday." (Liz the Sqeak.) But not this Saturday for the UK - it's scheduled for the 25th March. I gather the original idea for all this malarkey was dreamed up by Benjamin Frnaklin - the man who suggested the turkey as the national bird for the USA. This idea was another turkey, and one that badly needs its neck wrung. Changing the time we do stuff according to the time of year makes sense, but forcing us all to do it all together, with the clocks changing, is just silly. Especially now we've got clocks built into central heating systems and mobile phones and TVs and car dashboards and computers, as well as watches, and probably some devices I haven't caught up with yet. (And then you have other countries do it at different times which complicates matters yet again.) |
|
12 Mar 07 - 10:53 AM (#1994385) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: Scoville I think it ought to be reversed and we ought to set the clocks forward in the winter. Daylight at 6:00 a.m. is a total waste--anyone who doesn't have to be up is still asleep, and anyone who is up is headed to work or to school, where they won't see the daylight, anyway. So kids have to wait for the bus in the dark--they're almost walking home in the dark, anyway. They're not even using amost of that morning daylight. I'm surprised the anti-obesity faction haven't jumped on this since it makes it hard to be outside after school/work when it's pitch black out by 5:00. |
|
12 Mar 07 - 11:02 AM (#1994395) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: Scrump The excuse that used to be used by the government for putting the clocks back in the autumn, making it lighter earlier in the morning, was that it saved the lives of kids walking to school. Then more recently I saw something in the press that said the opposite, i.e. kids were more likely to get killed walking home from school in the evening. I don't know which is correct, but as most kids don't walk to school any more, but get driven by their parents, I would have thought this argument was irrelevant these days :-) I'm in favour of having more light at the end of the day, when I can conceivably do something useful when I get home, e.g. in the garden, before it gets dark. I can do folk-all in the morning before I go to work, because I don't have time, and I don't mind if it's dark when I go to work. Coupled with that is the fact that we in the UK are 1 hour behind (most of)the rest of the continent - I can't see any reason why we shouldn't adopt continental time. (I suspect the anti-EU lobby would object though, as if it was swapping the pound for the euro.) |

12 Mar 07 - 09:08 PM (#1994945) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: McGrath of Harlow I remember the Kippers used to point out that the longest day in the year is the day the clocks go back, because it has 25 hours, and the shortest day is when they go forward, because it only has 23. 14 Mar 07 - 06:46 PM (#1996943) Subject: RE: BS: Spring Forward for Daylight Savings From: Dave'sWife McGrath_of_Harlow - I don't know if this is true or not, but the US Government claims that by adding these extra weeks to Daylight savings time, the country as a whole is saving approiximately 100,000 barrels of oil that would have been used to power lights in businesses. That's the argument anyways. |
