BS: Obit: Ranger Steve's Mom

I just got the news this morning. I can't say it was a surprise, as she was in her 80's and had Parkinsons Disease for a while with all kinds of complications. For the last two years she seemed not to know what was going on very much, and my last visit (Thanksgiving) was hard, as she didn't seem to care much about anything or understand what was going on. My last phone call, last week, she didn't quite understand anything I said. What's so hard about it is that she was so lively up into her 70's. When she was 73, she drove from Florida up to my house in New Jersey, then up to my older brother's in Mass. all on her own. She loved to travel like that. She moved in with my younger brother in South Carolina about 5 years ago, and her health went down hill, until she had to go into a nursing home. It had to have been tough for someone as independent as she once was. So, in a way, I'm relieved that it's over, and I'll pull through, but I'm sad right now. Thanks for giving me a place to get this off my chest.

Steve

Commiserations Steve, from what you say, it's perhaps for the best.
As I always say, celebrate her life as you mourn her passing.

Steve, what you are describing fits a number of our departed parishioners to a T-- sometimes, they just sort of stop being there as they pull themselves further and further inward. I guess it's their time when it's their time-- but it never feels like the right time, does it, to those left behind?

You'll be in our thoughts.

Remember: it's only tough on those left behind, and you don't get over it anytime soon. Grief support will help. In the meantime, I'm thinkin' of you.

The hardest feeling to cope with is the guilt of being relieved that it's over. This feeling passes, as do the others of grief, loss and deprivation. Thinking of you.

Hey, Steve: I went through the same thing this year. It's different for everyone, but it's always hard. The best you can do is carry the loving memories with you. My Mother used to say "Life is making memories, so you'd better make the best ones that you can."
In the long run, they carry you through.

Jerry

Thanks, everyone. I finally came to grips with the idea that she's really gone. There's going to be a cremation, with a memorial service later one, since she could never abide the notion of being laid out for viewing at a funeral home.

One of her favorite things to do was to get in her car and drive, no particular destination, just going somewhere where she hadn't been to see what's there. I think I may have inherited that hobby from her. After she reached the stage where she couldn't drive long distances on her own, I'd go down Florida, and later, South Carolina, and I'd take her out driving, and those were some of the best trips ever. I know it had to be hard on her once she became bedridden. I'll take a road trip later on this week in her honor.

My mom was the same way, Steve. She always wanted to see what was "round the next bend." Driving just to see what was out there was always so much fun. I still love doing so, too. Next time I do, I will think of you and your mom and my own mom.
