Susanne: My parents and I will arrive sometime on Friday, and will stay in a holiday home in Wisch near Schönberg. We're turning it into a week's holiday, with dogs and all. So not to worry about accommodation for us!

Okay, I have risked reserving an apartment for 4 - 7 May at a guesthouse round the corner (no breakfast, two two-bed rooms, the whole at 85 Eur/night, regardless of number of occupants).

If not enough Mudcatters take up the offer, there is an alternative of individual accommodation at 30 Eur/night.

(Which means even three of you would be paying less in the apartment.)

Please PM me (or eMail me at: skw at worldmusic dot de) WITHIN DAYS if you would like to take up one of these offers as I have to tell them soon.

Brendy, where is your gig? Let me know, and I'll try to turn up.

May I remind everybody I have reserved two double rooms in a self-contained flat. So far, Ernest and Alan are interested, while Chas would prefer a single room. This would mean I'll cancel the flat as it would be more expensive for two than a single room. Not sure how many rooms they've got altogehter, though. Any more interested parties, please PM me.

Hi Susanne.

Myself and 3 other lads from the circuit here are playing at the Strongbow Marquee the the Rathausplatz. I'll probably be playing solo during the afternoons, and then joining the lads for the gigs later in the evenings.

I was there last year as well.

Hope to see you at some stage during the week.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make it for the weekend--will confirm shortly.

Can anyone advise on the cost of transporting instruments on flights? Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair upped the price of luggage last week (Dublin airport). On a radio programme discussing this several people phoned in saying they were charged extra for instruments, though they had not been notified of extra charges beforehand. The charges were more than the price of the flight.

I'll try to find out from the airlines but may just travel without instruments.

Looking forward to this...

Haven't got round to compiling a new list of those taking part (where is Andy when you need him?).

We were struck by quite a misfortune last Friday night when Hof Akkerboom's "art barn", a barn used for exhibitions and small events, burned down for the second time in five years. We're all feeling a bit downcast, especially as arson cannot be ruled out. (It was definitely arson in 2002.) Thankfully, the main house and the other barn were successfully protected by the fire brigade.

Despite that, I'm looking forward to the gathering and have suggested to Greg that we should try and distribute the sheet music for the dances you are planning to play to all, including the German participants. Likelihood is they'll know many of them in one form or another.

Houston, we have a problem ... I heard from Greg yesterday that the poor lad has broken his ankle and will be unable to attend the Mudgathering. Sad for him, sad for us, but I hope it'll heal without further complications and give him a few weeks of much needed (even if ill affordable) rest.

Today (yesterday, actually) having been my last working day for two weeks, I'll get round to doing a list this weekend, and also put together some directions to send to those coming to Kiel.

I tried making a direct link to the relevant bit of Multi-Map but when I tested it, it resulted in somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

If you click on this link Multi-Map and enter Stockholmstrasse 159 as the road and Kiel-Mettenhof as the town, that sould show you whereabouts Hof Akerboom is.

Ah think I've cracked it. With the help of Maparama.com and a hard study of the street names on the map.

17 minutes from the ferry terminal (at 18km p.h. !!)

Hafenstrasse for 70m
Swing right in Fabrikstrasse 210m
Swing left into Andreas-Gayk-Strasse 150m
Swing right into Ziegeltiech for 3km (Strange names they have here)
Then Kronshagener Weg for 130m
Continue into Skandinaviendamm for 3km.
Swing right into Stockholmstrasse 310m.

Roughly 6km.

Subject: RE: Details: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel
From: Susanne (skw)

Chas, I've sent you directions which lead you roughly the same way. Trouble with your directions is, you're not allowed to turn right at the top of Hafenstrasse or Fabrikstrasse.

Turn left from the ferry terminal, drive along Kaistrasse for roughly 200 m, turn right at the lights into Stresemannplatz, drive straight on along Ziegelteich. From there, your directions are ok.

However, I'd think it more sensible to collect at my place as the rooms I've reserved are round the corner from there. So it is:
up Ziegelteich as above, then turn left at the next major lights, towards the motorway.
Another mile or so, and turn right at the lights just before you actually enter the motorway.
Turn left at the next lights, drive straight on across TWO level crossings.
After the second, turn left at the lights, which will take you to a bridge across the motorway.
Turn right into the next street. The huge block of flats at the bottom is Kolonnenweg no 1. Ring bell at Kalweit. If no one opens, please wait. I may be out collecting more Mudcatters.

BTW, I learned last night we'll have to find something else to do on Friday night: Dick Gaughan has cancelled his German tour at short notice, for reasons as yet unknown. Very disappointing, of course, but I'm sure Mudcatters will rise above that. Looking forward to you all!

Now, the first evening is well underway. We had dinner at the side of the Baltic sea. Fidjit and I had boys' willies with our porc meat. Boys willies they are called in (Suebian) German not for what they taste like (I couldn't tell BTW) but how they look like. They have just the size and the form of boys' willies and are made half of noodle and half of potato dough. The German (Suebian) name is Buabespitzle which I have translated above, but in high German they are know as Schupfnudeln which has no interesting translation.

Can confirm Friday went very well. The only thing lacking was music. Chas was the first to arrive at 9.30. Took him for a short tour of Kiel, plus a purchase of guitar strings, before we collected Andy and Wilfried from the station. Doug phoned at 5.30, from outside my front door, because he'd left home before I revealed my second name and thus didn't know which of the 64 doorbells to ring. Then Don rang to say he'd reached the station after a delay of plane and train. When I went out to collect him I ran into Wolfgang who'd taken the bus out to my house.

When they'd all been installed at the holiday flat they're staying at we went out to have the prolonged meal Wolfgang mentioned. Now it looks as though several Mudgatherers are ready for their beds. Watch this space!

Superb day yesterday - a ferry trip through the mist which gave way to glorious sunshine. An inpromtu session on the baoat was appreciated by some, but perhaps not by all of the other passengers.

Last night Chas, Don and I formed part of a 15 piece ceilidh band which included two hurdy-gurdies.

Saturday night was just great with a folk Bigband. Ich war so richtig kandidel, aber hoffentlich noch nicht überkandidelt. Some of the instruments looked really unique. Yes, and like Ernest I want to thank Susanne for the perfect organisation.

kandidel, norddt. (veralt.) fröhlich, heiter (in my five year old Duden)
kandidel, north German (obs.) merry

In my Brockhaus of 1935, they only have the spellings kanddel and kanditel but they have also the reflexive verb sich kandideln, sich betrinken (to get drunk).

I have found nothing yet about the etymology.

From a short web search it looks as if the word means "heiter" more in the sense of "angeheitert" that is merry in the sense of tipsy.

Plus, Don found that he met Bernd Unstedt, one of our foremost Kiel players of Irish music, in Dublin way back in 1983. Fidjit also plays in a Swedish spelemanslag (?) with the well-known player of the Nyckelharpa , Alban Faust, who not only is a German living in Sweden but has done concerts at Hof Akkerboom twice (and we hope to have him back some time).

Wilfried and Andreas are on their way home, Fidjit is exploring the region's golf courses before he catches the boat back home tonight, and I'm left to clear up and get on with the rest of my life. (NOT catch up on sleep, because this gathering was very well-behaved, with bedtime usually round about midnight.)

You were great, boys, all of you! (Sorry to say I was the 'token sheila' on the Mudcat side, due to Letty's misfortune. I hope her father is a little better by now.)

Now - who is going to host the 2008 Eurogathering? :-)))))

I shouldn't forget to say Thank you to the people at Hof Akkerboom, who let us have the run of the house, and particularly Volker Schroeren, melodeon player and perfect barman on the Saturday night, who was virtually the only one to turn up again for the tiny Sunday session.

Also, a thanks to the participants who collected 170 euros for Mudcat among them. They're on their way to Bill Sables via Grimsby in Doug's pocket.

Now I'll go and pack for next weekend's festival.

and here are the other half. We three, "Gulliver" Don And Doug - the Mug - Chadwick, plus yours truly made up the last percentage. 110% this celidh band was !

We were rightly proud to be in such company.

Greg, we missed you and yet we didn't. Hope your ancle is getting better.

We'd sorted out a few tunes for some of the dances I was to teach in the back kitchen. Hoping we'd manage ok in no other musicians turned up. We needn't have worried. When you have bands like these behind you. Well instant success.

Erhard sorted out the German dances for the very eager crowd of dancers. They got up for everything. I even learnt two to take with me to the next meeting I have with the Swedish dancers I play with.

I really enjoyed my visit to Kiel and will surely be back. Hof Akkerboom is a great place.

I was a nice surprise to meet up with Rainer Schwarz again after 30 years. He even was encouraged me to sing "The German Clock Winder". To a crowd of Germans. Well ! Never thought I'd do that. Went down well though.

Susanne. You did us proud with your hospitality. All the sight seeing, Fjord trips and the eating places we visited were the best.

Don and Doug - "the Mug". Thanks for the sessions. Good one in the garden in the sunshine on Sunday. And to all the other mudcatters that were there. Hope we meet again.

Cheers - prost etc.

Arrived back safely, a couple of hours ago. A relaxing night crossing on the ferry was most welcome after a 600km drive through heavy rain and spray on the autobahn. I was glad I wasn't going the other way as a bad accident was causing a tail-back that seemed to go on forever.

I really enjoyed playing at the ceilidh. The German and Danish tunes were much easier to pick up than Irish tunes and I was able to join in most of them. Unfortunately, my poor memory and a long drive home means that I can't remember many of them now.

Susanne had organised perfect weather for the rest of the weekend and Sunday afternoon was spent by a select group singing and playing, under the shade of a tree, outside the thatched building of Hof Akerboom.

I was hoping you would forget about the collection, Susanne. I was just working out what musical bits and pieces I could get for 170 euros.

Thanks Susanne for organising such an enjoyable weekend. It was good to meet you, MudGuard, Wolfgand and Wilfried again and also to put faces to the names for Ernest, Fidjit and Gulliver.

To jog your memory you can listen to some of them on the, Hansdans.de website. They have short versions of some of what they/we did.

Glad you're all safely back where you belong (until next time). And a little proud Kiel Eurogathering went as well as it did. Just one amendment to Fidjit's praises: Erhard was the one leading the singing. It was Hinrich from Hamburg who called the German dances (as he does regularly for us). BTW, he has his own very similar venue at home, the Heidbarghof.

And I'm back, too, and sitting at my office PC. Naturally I opened the Mudcat first, looking for the Eurogathering. Glad that you all enjoyed the jolly gathering, and so did I.

Thanks to all for coming, singing and playing. It reerected me again for a year - without music the soul withers.

My special thanks go to Susanne for the splendid organization, bed and breakfast.

Still 296 days to go till retirement.

Sing and enjoy

The Mug arrived safely home, Chas, and already been out to good use, though for cider rather than beer.

However, if you remember my tale of disaster with my brand new coffee pot on the journey to Kiel, well my wife bought a replacement this evening and hadn't been in the house more than 10 minutes when the bag of shopping fell off the kitchen unit. I will now have to buy yet a third pot or else stick to drinking tea.

I'll give the HansDans website a coat of looking when I get a few spare moments.

Poor potless Doug - how will the third coffee pot be demolished? Make your own unbreakable pot scoutwise: take a piece of bamboo holding about a half pint, put on a leather sling, and it will serve for all drinkable matters hot or cold (except for beer which can be drank out of bottle or can in the field).
I still keep my bamboo pot I made as a young scout some 50 years ago.

Drink, sing, and enjoy

Sounds like a delightful gathering. I'd considered trying to join you this year but the choral schedule vetoed it--we did our last big concert on the same weekend. I remember visiting Kiel a few eons ago--great fun. Also listened to some of the MP3's on one of the links you provided. Man, I am way out of practice--have no chance with anything but Hochdeutsch--and I'd need some of the songs translated--not into English, but Hochdeutsch.

Sorry, but I'm not going to make it to Kieler Woche this year, after all.
The accommodation wasn't what it was meant to be, so I pulled out.

I'm up in Esbjerg most of the time anyway, so if you're ever in the vicinity, my daytime (and sometimes nighttime) 'office' is the Paddy Go Easy Irish Pub, in that sainted town.....!

Hope to bump into you sometime.
