24 Mar 07 - 04:49 AM (#2005625) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Rasener Thanks Ian Mark was very good. Not very often that you get a class guitarist show you what he can do without showing off (hope that makes sense). His 2 sets were varied and entertaining and I for one was very impressed with him. Glad I am not a guitarist, otherwise I would have come home and smashed mine up :-) >>god luck with them les,is for a great cause<< Well I hope he thinks so. Do you think he will buy one :-) |

24 Mar 07 - 07:14 AM (#2005682) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Big Al Whittle As you say Mark is a guitarist of very great ability - really trying to keep a handle on the rhythmic integrity of folk guitar which is at the centre of the style, whilst still exploring and looking for ways to take the whole business forward. I had no idea, he had emigrated - the last I had seen him was 18 months ago at the Y Theatre in Leicester. I hope France is good to Mark and Mo. Nice also to hear the Maggie Holland song I had heard so much about. That is THE Maggie Holland who used to play bass in Hot Vultures........ Nicely sung Sue. And Gwen and Terry - thanks for all your efforts and hard work on the PA. If you had asked I would gladly have swapped the 'graveyard shift'. Some nice playing and singing, a perfect residents opening set! Tim the Twangler - I didn't know you were there. I wish you had made yourself known to me. We had a correspondence going a short while back - I hope you are still writing. I sometimes think about your song about the 'kidnapped into the sex trade' theme. Its not my sort of song - I know how I would record it though - with unearthly frightening noises in background - perhaps Gwen would help you find such noises on a synth - or on guitar you would need to be using blues notes with cathedral style amounts of delay and reverb - for some eerie atmosphere! Also nice to see Helen of Helian Keys again. Thanks for asking me Les - always a pleasure. To be honest, I've been a bit fed up with the folkscene through mudcat just lately - even to the point of thinking of abandoning it entirely. Pleasant nights like last night - with a small but friendly and appreciative crowd restore ones faith in the folk clubs - even if it doesn't extend to people at the heart of folk movement. |

Enjoyed the night, sorry I was a bit late,so ended up rushing in as G & T starting. I was acting as family taxi service, last night! Thanks everyone who played/helped and hope the cd launch was a success, Villan. |
24 Mar 07 - 09:56 AM (#2005782) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: GUEST,ian Big Al,don't even think of abandoning us.I know what you mean re Mudcat and have found myself not entering into debates like i used to. Tim is writing some really good stuff which you can find on his myspace. I think Gwenda and Terry will forgive you Helen for late arrival. You are after all one the the great stalwarts of of music in the area. |

24 Mar 07 - 05:57 PM (#2006145) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Rockhen Was gonna post on here about your last but one post, Tim, but I think it makes more sense to chat to you face-to-face... as on here it is easy to misinterpret the 'tone' of people's comments and I probably did, this time. I thought Al's remark about you not introducing yourself, funny, too! I guess he was right, in a way, but it was funny that he sat next to you! |
24 Mar 07 - 08:55 PM (#2006257) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: GUEST,ian Yep mate i am in that fold of only turning up when centre stage.Bloody love it as well and wish it was every week.Sad to say i am not able to make every week, coz everyone has different lives to live and not all lucky enough to see all the great nights Les puts on. |
24 Mar 07 - 09:06 PM (#2006268) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Tim theTwangler Yes have noticed is a one way street as far as that goes. Oh well guess we just good enough to have as an audience but not quite there when comes to being worth a listen. |
24 Mar 07 - 10:12 PM (#2006315) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Rockhen I still think if you have any argument with people,on this type of thread, you should debate it in PMs or face-to-face. This thread is about, what was, in my opinion, a pleasant night at a good club. If other points arise, as in your opinion, Tim, you have a right to hold those beliefs. However, I for one, will not bother posting anymore on this thread. The night is over and it was a good one, I thought. If you want to continue discussing what you posted, Tim, maybe you should start a separate thread or do it in PMs, or speak to those who you wish to debate points with. That is my opinion. Like the above, is yours. Anyone who doesn't agree with me, fine, but PM me instead of discussing it on this thread, because I will not answer on here. Those who know me, know I prefer debate to argument. I also prefer face-to-face discussion to that which is typed. Thank you, once more to all those who went/played/helped with Friday night at Faldingworth Live. |
25 Mar 07 - 06:24 AM (#2006510) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: GUEST,ian Always worth a listen mate and have been to many music nights when i never got chance to hear you for one reason or another.Either because of your work, illness or you just can't be bothered to play.As i said anyone wanting to hear more of what Tim is about regards his music, they should check out his great tunes on myspace.I do regular.I don't think this is the best place to have digs, coz you all seemed to have a great night, performers and listeners.Keep it up Les and all the regulars. |
25 Mar 07 - 07:33 AM (#2006546) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Big Al Whittle I'm sorry I didn't know you were Tim the Twangler. I would have enjoyed chatting about your work. I think you have a lot to contribute to the folkscene. As someone who has worked 'outside the tradition' - I know its not easy to to write about - life as lived outside the usual frames of folksong reference. And you DO get brickbats like the git who told me recently on mudcat that I was merely involved in 'commercial music'. (If my approach is commercial rather than idealistic - why have I refused to make the very simple stylistic changes that would render me 'traditional'? Does anybody seriously think its cos I couldn't?) Keep going Tim, but don't expect it to be easy! On the other matter of why I don't go to Faldigworth when I'm not singing. Its not my local folk club - which I always think of as Spondon in Derby. there are nearer ones but many of them are inaccessible for my disabled wife. I went over to Faldingworth when Dave Fletcher was there cos we were in class 2B together at many years ago at a hellish outpost of the British Empire, namely Boston grammar School. And I'm hoping to run Derek Brimstone over there in July. Its quite a drive though for just a casual night out - particularly with all those bloody speed cameras that keep making you go gown to 40 mph on midnight deserted roads. |
25 Mar 07 - 07:43 AM (#2006550) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Tim theTwangler Ok rocky I didnt realise you were the moderater of this thread. I did not refer to you except as a good suporter of the club as you are many other venues. In fact I agreed with GuestIans comment. It seems I cant PM a guest for some reaon. SO I pmd you with my further reply perhaps you could pass it on? |
25 Mar 07 - 08:31 AM (#2006577) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Georgiansilver Hey Big Al...what's this about running Derek Brimstone over? Do you not like him? Sorry to have missed you on Friday but we went to see 'Satin' at Nettleham for a change of scenery. They were pretty good. Are you writing a song for the comp this time Al....not sure if it is worth the effort for me but might still just give it a go if I get inspired. Take care mate. Best wishes, Mike. OOOPPPS....sorry to have missed the others also...I didn't deliberately diss you all. |
25 Mar 07 - 01:16 PM (#2006752) Subject: RE: Faldingworth Live Friday March 23rd 2007 From: Big Al Whittle No sod it, I don't expect to write a better one than last time - making it the title track of the album. And that got nowhere. However I felt the same, about the same time last year. if something occurrs to me I'll write it and send it in. It was a good night, with Mark playing very well indeed. probably the best performance by him, I've ever heard. he's really has put the hours in over the jigs and reels stuff and he is bloody good. Most guitarists are either despicably clockwork sounding, or complete rubbish - you see its almost melodic guitar, but the rhythm element has to very strong indeed. Mark has pretty much cracked that broonzy/stivell equation that most guitarists who try it, make such a dogs arse out of: and most of us don't try. there are numerous ways to go wrong -like the antiseptic feel that very good guitarists achieve - but somehow lose that rough drive that people like Broonzy and Josh White made an essential part of the instrument. Also, some of it has to be improvised - otherwise it is stale. what can I say, ten out of ten - mate! look forward to seeing you Mike! al |
