I have been singing unaccompanied for 30 years. I used to wish I could play or find someone to accompany me but I have come to realise that with many songs I vary the speed and rythme to emphasies different parts and most people who try and join in with an instrument want to fix the speed and rythme and constrain the singer. It takes a lot of practice for the instrumentalist to be only an accompianist! I too do not know what key I sing in, anything from second soprano down to upper bass but usually in the tenor range. If the song has a chorus then I try to pitch where others can join in, but it doesn't always work! The speed of the chorus dictated either by the preceeding verse or always the same. That will depend on the sence of the song. Don't be afraid to sing unaccompanied, but if you enjoy the challenge of people joining in - go for it! Menolly
