One of my favorites is recounted in J.P O'Rourke's "Holidays in Hell": a story about a Lebanese border guard who stopped a taxi to search it. He told the driver to get out and open the trunk. The driver said the guard would have to get in and hold his foot on the brake, because the emergency didn't work. The guard agreed and did so. The driver opened the trunk. "Now," says the guard from the driver's seat, "are you carrying and contraband?"
