http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=bc_home&articleID=1529963

dont know if I made the link correctly anyway, this probably wont
make the news in the states, but some dimwit american mistook vancouver canada for vancouver washington and got stopped at the peace arch border crossing. UPon searching the vehicle they found a live grenade in her glove compartment. (man, wouldnt want to cut her off on the highway).

Claimed she knew nothing about it, was probably her husbands as hes in the army. They sent her on her way after some questioning.

Imagine if she was going the other way and they found a roach, according to the zero tolerance her car would be seized - and shed be arrested and never allowed in the states again. Go figure.
petr.

Yes, it made the news in the US. Why would you think it didn't? I heard it yesterday. Radio news, while I was in the car. In addition, she was clueless about the direction she was driving. Her destination was Vancouver, WA, but she was headed in the opposite direction.

But it's archy and mehitabel. All lower case.

For those not acquainted with some of the greater literary works, archy, the soul of a verse libre poet reincarnated in the body of a cockroach, typed his missives on a standard typewriter by crawling up on the case and diving onto the keyboard while aiming at the specific letter he wanted, hoping that his meagre weight would depress the key sufficiently to type the letter. Since he couldn't hold down the shift key at the same time, everything came out in lower case (except for one time when the shift key was left locked down). Obviously, archy was a dedicated writer, because producing his works requied a great deal of physical exertion.

Newspaperman Don Marquis would come into his office in the mornings and find archy's latest work in his typewriter. Thus, archy's literary efforts, often describing the adventures of his friend mehitabel (an alley-cat of great soul but easy virtue), made it into the public view.

archy's observations on the human condition are well worth reading and heeding.

Mixing up Vancouver B.C. and Vancouver, Washington is very easy to do and does not warrant your snobbish tone. Vancouver B.C. is a huge metropolitan city, a major tourist destination. Vancouver, Washington, near to my home town, and where I lived prior to moving to Long Beach, is a small city, almost unknown even in Washington..it is part of the Portland metro area...

There is so much confusion that there are periodic attempts to rename the city, the most common suggestion being Fort Vancouver, as it is the original Ft. Vancouver.

If newspaper editors, tourist agencies etc. get these mixed up, a young wife from God knows where, sending her husband off to hell and gone, under great stress, can certainly make this mistake..and I doubt that her husband should have had the grenade in the car...

Yeah, Beetle, me too. The FBI investigates such things, and the penalties aren't light. You're not allowed to bring things back to the barracks, much put them in your car. I think he's in BIG trouble, even if it turns out that the grenade is "just" a practice one.

For what it's worth, they don't let you take your gun home, either.

Highly illegal to carry issued weapons in a personal vehicle, Metchosin, but even more so to carry a grenade, even a dummy (training) one-and none of the articles I saw said if it was live or not. Here is the article from the Seattle Times.

a friend of mine who happened to cross the border with the remnants of a roach in his pocket - ended up enduring a full body cavity search, had to pay a significant fine of several hundred US (they wouldnt take Canadian funds - so his friend had to go to a US bank and get the money) and has been banned from the US ever since.
(the incident happened a few years ago just before they instituted the zero-tolerance policy- otherwise his car would have been seized and auctioned off).

in a different case - a canadian truck driver, had his truck seized and held for months - because unbeknowst to him a co-worker left his lunch bag (with an orange in the cab).

my snobbish tone? please excuse me for being ticked off at the inequality of treatment - theres plenty of americans crossing the border that that are outraged theyre not allowed to carry their guns across to canada.

this woman went clear across the entire state, and dont tell me she cant read the signs everywhere that say Vancouver Canada along the way, and her husband is even dumber for having grenade in the car in the first place.

dumb PERSON...no need to point out nationality

everyone but you, Petr, including the guards, was convinced the woman WAS lost and had no idea the thing was in the car! The husband WAS dumb for having it in the car, but sheesh! why the insistance that the woman was somehow 'at fault' for misreading highway signs? Come to MY area, and I'll show you some signs that defy comprehension, unless you already know where you are going!

"inequality of treatment" ...seems to me the guards did the right thing and weighed the incident on its merits, rather than look up how some Canadians were treated in vaguely similar circumstances.

The lady was from Houston. It is just as likely that she had never heard of Vancouver, BC. It's been a couple of years since I have droven on I-5 out of Tacoma, WA, but I'd be inclined to doubt that the signs say anything at all about Vancouver being in Canada, any more than the ones there say Seattle U.S.A.

Say what you will about our government, say what you will about that woman, but don't pull this "dumb American" crap and expect us to feel sorry because a few of your friends had some bad luck at the border. I'm sure we could fill this thread up with stories from Americans who had similiar problems.

There are numerous instances of identically named towns or cities on both sides of state or national borders: Kansas City, MO & Kansas City, KS - Niagara Falls, NY & Niagara Falls, ON. The woman probably just assumed that Vancouver, WA and Vancouver, BC are such a cross-border pair. It's not illogical.

One of my favorites is recounted in J.P O'Rourke's "Holidays in Hell": a story about a Lebanese border guard who stopped a taxi to search it. He told the driver to get out and open the trunk. The driver said the guard would have to get in and hold his foot on the brake, because the emergency didn't work. The guard agreed and did so. The driver opened the trunk. "Now," says the guard from the driver's seat, "are you carrying and contraband?"

C'mon - Vancouver and Vancouver are about 300 miles apart. Did the woman have no sense of time? Besides that, if you leave Fort Lewis, Vancouver, Wash. is South and Vancouver, B.C. is north. No sense of time and no sense of direction. And what? A grenade? Accidently forgot? Pretty dumb if you ask me.

Mary Garvey - I love Long Beach. Spent alot of summers there as a kid. Dug alot of clams, too. Still dream of the dunes and the long expanse of sand at low tide. We used to get there on old logging roads. My aunt lived in an old Victorian house with a widow's walk and my cousins and I would be shipped out there to run wild on the beach. I hear that now there are condos built on the beach and all kinds of commercial kicks to be had. Believe it or not, we were the working class poor. As a kid I didn't know that. Just goes to show you how rich experience can make you.

Lucky you. Say hello to the shorebirds for me.

To Joe, Ron or any other of our American `catters".
Our "Daily Telegraph" of Feb. 17 contained an article by Vicki Woods(page 20) that suggests that American sensitivity to certain expressions results in you shying away from using the word "cock" in daily conversation. Hence your usage of "roach", "rooster", and avoidance of Anglo words like "stopcock" and "cockle" (baby clam) etc.
Do you see this article as pretentious nonsense and journalistic licence or is there a grain of truth in it?

You people are missing the big picture, here. Everyone's hung up on the grenade. That's a red herring (no, not a fish, a misleading piece of evidence to distract the unwary from the true intent of her nefarious scheme). She was smuggling--no, not weapons, VEHICLES and ART. The grenade was a paper weight, nothing more. Get it together, 'catters. God, this is embarrassing. The map was a stolen Picasso. She got away with it because everyone focused on the grenade. Do I really have to explain this to intelligent people? The border guard was Canadian. Canadians would mistake the grenade for a fishing tool; in fact, they work very well when ya forget the fishing gear at home. That woman was brilliant. She should be nominated for something. I gotta go now. Need my meds.

O'Meara, she wasn't held by the RCMP in Canada, I assume by this report and linked video that she and her SUV, after Immigration dealt with the matter, were turned over to US officials. I have heard nothing from the US side about what happened after. You can click on the little video camera further down the page linked and see more.

Hugh, it sounds like Vicki was having a slow newsday. Either that or maybe her fixation on the word is telling another story.

I think most Americans refer to the bug as a "cockroach", not "roach". The word "roach" has a whole different meaning to most of us who spent time in the 60's and beyond.

If we were to use that logic, I guess that would mean you Brits have an issue with penis size becuase you refer to "prawns" instead of "shrimp"? Makes you uncomfortable?

Our sensitivity is probably not worse than any other group.

As I opened the thread I expected to see some observation to do with another Texan transporting weapons of mass (on a relative scale!) destruction to other nations of the world.

I must have passed this unfortunate driver on the road yesterday as I drove south from Marysville to SeaTac. Hard enough to drive in that traffic anyway, but it was raining all day. To arrive at the wrong border, find this thing was in the glove box--makes one wonder at the domestic conversation once this much-maligned woman met up with hubby later in the day? Probably just as well she no longer had the grenade handy.

Carol must be a free spirit. The article is right on. I would never substitute cock for rooster around my mom. I would never say I want to suck on some buttered cockles, either. Anymore than I would suck on a fag. Cockroach is a freebie, though, no issue there. (How much time do you have to do for throwing a cockroach?)

I've read & RE-read...and nothing I see tells me they let her KEEP the grenade...just that they were convinced she had no idea it was there. I guess they just finally let her go on and visit her relatives or whatever. I assume her dumb hubby will be hearing from someone. (and 'maybe' it WAS a play/dud/blank/ grenade! I had one of those once, when a woman asked me to 'get rid of' one her husband had around...it made her nervous.)

The Seattle Times story that I linked to above says that The border crossing was closed in both directions from about 1 to 2 p.m. while an RCMP bomb squad examined then confiscated the grenade.

"My parents have a pea in the living room". No, I can't imagine that.

We all drive around with a large grenade, it's called a "fuel tank." The "grenade" has about 8 times the HE that any small Hand Gernade and is just as easy to detonate. Maybe gernade is the wrong word...A car could be a RPG.

Dead of winter, even below zero temps, and a peacock is living at my friend's ranch. It wandered in last summer and stayed in the wind break. It likes to eat cat food.

Sure, we say cock. "He went off half-cocked." "Did you cock your gun?" "He cocked his head to the left to get a better look." "That's just a cock and bull story." "The bar fight ended when the bully was cold cocked." ..... see, lots of ways we use the word cock in America.

And sometimes we use it in the straightforward (some might say "upstanding") way that has been alluded to and talked circles around in this thread. . . men seem to like the word, and in particular, reference to themselves with this word. . .

I do know a chap who, following a re-enactment muster, had emptied the clothing and light kit out of his car and intending to finish emptying the boot next morning. The following day he was woken by a phone call asking him to come into work to help with a minor emergency, he drove in, passed through a Police security cordon (London's "Ring of Steel"), got to work and suddenly realised that he had two functioning replica Stokes Mortars in the boot of his car.
I wonder what would have happened if they'd been found?

according to a national geographic survey, 80 percent of Americans

Maybe she was one of them.
no wonder it's so easy for the current govt. to pull the wool over their eyes.

Mikemoore: You hit the nail on the head. The reason it is so easy to dupe any population of people is because, at best, the schools teach how to become functionally literate (at best). That means they can function well enough to be good little consumers. What is needed to be truly democratic is a population that is critically literate. That means they can weigh both sides of the argument and make up their own minds. It also means they will be able to see through the gimmics of false advertising and campaign tricks.
