The Ottawa Citizen recently ran a series of articles on the prosecution of a man with Prader-Willi syndrome who was in court on many charges of stealing food from supermarkets and failing to pay in restaurants. His parents are either dead or no longer able to take care of him, and no group home in the region would take him -- for one thing, everything edible in the house has to be locked up very securely all the time. After being held in jail on remand for weeks, he was (if I recall correctly) discharged at trial on mental health grounds and committed to an institution. God alone knows what will become of him: Ontario psychiatric care is criminally underfunded and chaotically disorganized. No, there's nothing funny about Prager-Willi syndrome.
