Ferrara Getaway 2007 (137* d) RE: Getaway 2007 07 Nov 07

I'd love to write something here but I'd have to write for at least half an hour to mention all the moments that stand out in my mind. Kendall and Jacqui doing Phoebe Snow. Darriel's photo of Kendall in The Jacket and The Hat, sitting on a bench by the river. Janie's song in the Songs from the Hills workshop, in fact anything Janie sang that I got to hear. The Saturday jam in the dining hall, featuring Amos, Lonesome EJ, Keith Baldwin (who came all the way from Oregon) and Carl-whose-last-name-I-dont-know, among others.

Edmund's version of Danny Deever, and Charmion's version of The D-Day Dodgers. Every moment of the mummer's play, but especially Dennis and Micca's heated exchange of insults (ad-libbed, apparently).

Sunday late-night singing was some of the best. I got to sing two old favorites with David on harp and Ron on viola. One of them, Starlight on the Rails, was a request from Ron that I hadn't sung in years but it used to be a Getaway standard for a few of us, back when we were at Camp Letts.

Later, back at the Retreat Center, I ended up staying up until 3 for some mostly unaccompanied singing. Highlights: Lisa Null singing almost anything, Penny Anderson lining out and singing a Primitive Baptist hymn with several of us joining in -- quite an experience, it's a beautiful and difficult singing style and Penny was so-o-o-o good at it -- followed by John Roberts singing "Just a Picture from Life's Other Side" with banjo accompaniment to keep up the American Trad mood.

BTW Darriel's photos are great but as Bill says, we aren't likely to get them before Thanksgiving. Sigh....
