sian, west wales Welsh translation request by Brandywine (5) RE: Welsh translation request by Brandywine 06 Jul 10

Here it is, Andrew - I'll send it to the email as well:

BRANDYWINE: Dawnsio Appalachaidd a cherddoriaeth Tir Glas.
Mae Clocswyr Appalachaidd yn gwisgo dur ar flaen a sawdl eu hesgidiau i gadw'r curiad wrth ddawnsio. Clocswyr? 'Dyn ni ddim yn gwisgo clocsiau! Band Tir Glas yw ein band ni. Yn nodweddiadol am rythmau pwerus, medrusrwydd offerynnol a chanu cryf, mae Tir Glas yn ffurf wahanol ar gerddoriaeth Americanaidd. Gyda Brandywine byddwch yn siwr o brofi perfformiad egnïol a fydd yn codi'ch hwyliau ac yn eich gadael yn galw am ragor. I wybod mwy, ewch i'n gwefan www.brandywine-cloggers.co.uk

Now - the interesting thing is that he's used "Tir Glas" and not "Glaswellt glas" as I expected. Having checked it in The Welsh Academy Dictionary (like - the *really big* dictionary) that is, indeed, the proper translation. "Canu Tir Glas" is "Blue Grass Music". He's used 'cerddoriaeth' because it's a bit more all-encompassing and people often thing of 'singing' when 'canu' is used. 'Canu' is literally correct for both vocal and instrumental music making but there's a bit of anglicanization happening in the language over the last few decades.

Anyway, hope this helps. And I hope that anyone who's calling in at the Eisteddfod will feel free to come to Ty Gwerin and claim a cuppa. We have Trefor Owen (clogs) and Marcus Butler (not sure what he's making yet) doing craft exhibitions each morning, and various music workshops each afternoon. Also, closing each day with a Welsh session.

Croeso!

sian
