Folk have put "Ye Jacobites By Name" and "Flower Of Scotland|" down as rebel Songs! The original Ye Jacobites was vehemently anti-Jacobite and though Burns may have reworked that out of it in his version it still looks to me as an 'anti-rebellion' song. Flower Of Scotland is sung by nationalists and unionists alike though it obviously has nationalist sentiments. I wouldn't call it a rebel song though. It says that those days (ie of conflict) must remain in the past but we can still rise to be a nation again. Surely Williamson was talking about the democratic process. Anti-union rebels of consequence in modern Scotland simply don't exist - at least there are not enough to fill about two phone boxes. |
